Tire Diameter

  • When upgrading tire/wheel sizes, the goal is to increase the tire contact patch area and diminish flex by reducing side wall height.
The important component is to try and maintain the same outside diameter.
This assures minimal changes in the overall drive ratio and speedometer reading.
Keep in mind that width only represents half of the equation in increasing the contact patch.
The larger the tire's diameter, the more tread is available longitudinally in the "scrub areas".
A wider tire which has a shorter overall height may yield less contact patch than what you started with!
