    Camber plates

The camber kit and rear shock reinforcement plates arrived this morning, from Phoenix motorsport, see pictures.

I'm not at all sure about the reinforcement plates - they seem to have an inherently weak/very thin edge; not sur what to do; feels I might have wasted time with these ones. They certainly look compromised and not like the ones in previous posts.

To fit or not to fit... advice please...

Was sorting some old papers and came across this clipping I had kept.
It is from the "Your Car" supplement of "the Press and Journal" May 4th 2005.
The Image section particularly....What do you think?
It is the first time I'v heard the 8 being regarded in this way.
With all due respect to all Capri owners, I have always regarded the driver of the 8 as someone definitly with taste and class, with or without 'red braces'.

In the mean time can anyone lend me their 'red braces' ....I've just booked mine for a service at the main dealers....against my good judgement...again!

    Rattle

    Hi Hemi
It could be loose trim/fixtures/numberplate/etc that rattles with wind russhing at it giving it, at different speeds and road conditions, a regular frequency.
    Hope its simple.
    cheers

    suspension kit

Schnitz - absolutely correct not too difficult at all. It is just time and workshop facilities I'm lacking at the present. I've just moved back to England from Scotland and everything is in boxes right up to the ceiling in my garage. That is why I wanted to know about Midland/uk suppliers/supplier fitters.

TT - I don't necessarily want to lower the car as I do a fair bit of urban commuting. However, the shocks are in need of replacement, It's like driving a yacht around town. I'v had this car for 5yrs or so and as far as I can see from its history and documents no one has ever done anything to its suspension. So I'v ordered the camber kit and rear shock reinforcement plates from Phoenixsport and I thought I'd do the lot whilst I'm at it. In fact, for my purposes, I don't see why not only change the shocks with Bilstein dampers! What is your opinion, do you think that would work out alright? I'd appreciate your opinion.
I..Say.. are your springs going to become surplus to your needs pretty shortly??!! Let me Know.

So how about it everyone, is there a supplier in Midlands/England at all?

    Thanks

    Mat

    Hi everyone
Can anyone tell me if there are any suppliers/fitter of the Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers in the Midlands area.
    Thanks in advance
    Mat

    camber plates

    Hi all
Just in the process of ordering the camber plates and rear shock reinforcement paltes from Phoenixsport, cost inclusive of vat just over £88 and £35 respectively. I forgot to ask if that included p&p.
They do not accept credit card but happy with paypal and will dispatch within 24hrs.

Could anyone tell me where in the Midlands I could find suppliers and possibly fitters for the Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers.

    Thank you in advance
    Mat

    windows steaming up

check your sunroof seal too, it may be leaking and or the drain channels may be blocked, either way can lead to gradual dampness of your headlining, sometimes without staining, so you won't notice.
in any case, there seems to be a lot of moisture trapped in your car, once vapourised and the windows cold-enough there will be condensation.

for now, or once you cured the problem, it is not a bad idea to leave a dehumidifier in your car over-night or week-end. just shut it in, the door seal will allow the wire out of your car. the car temperatutre needs to be around 5 + degree for it to work well, best in the garage with windows and doors shut. need to check the tank and empty captured water, and take out the over mats and dry them separately, so as to allow the carpets to dry underneath.

on the other hand - as far as pollen filters are concerned - i can't see how they could be so badly blocked in 12 months to stop airflow. however, after changing the filters if you didn't put things back together properly, rain could be getting into the bulk-head area (could also have blocked drip channels, possibly with debris/leaves etc), the engine heat will vaporise the water in this area and allow it to get into the cabin.

be good to see this is really due to your aic conditioning system!

    regards.

my 94 840ci has speed sensitive volume control. at first i thought even squeezing the volume knob altered things... or do they??

I have a uk 94 840ci and it opens and closes everything including the sunroof with the remote fob.
however the smallest movement whilst opening and particularly closing is in progress... the systems gives up and you have to press the open once and then the shut and hold.
so if you trying to look cool and walk away whilst closing the entire car....it won't work.
you have to pretend to be in freez-frame!!!
so i stopped using the thing years ago.
its quicker to shut the lot before getting out.

    hi everyone
there seems to be an awful lot of contradictory information out there.
my old dad always used to warm-up his cars, we're talking old fords/vauxhauls/opals/mercs/bmws etc, etc.
I still warm up the family car (new Renult grand espace-diesel) on cold and frosty days, sometimes a good 20-30min whilst doing the three "Ss"(guess what these Ss are!) - with the climate control on full defrost mode. i've always done this for my kids. the car is toasted and often we end up dropping the kids off with the panoramic roof fully open.
BUUTTT! according to the hand book you'r not even supposed to get stuck in traffic for more than a minute in the 8s!!
can you just imagine what sort of driving mode you need to adhere to if your were to comply with all that!
one thing is for sure, if i ever let the 8 idle for 20 min or so, from cold that is, if shortly after normal temperature is reached i kick down in sport mode i would get a burst of steam/unburnt/white cloud out of the exhausts.
before you ask, there is no head gasket or oil burning problems at all and touch wood there never is any undue loss of either coolants between services.
lets hear more enlightening experiences and advice everyone. after all our engines are only getting older and presumably more fragile.
do you think BMW would have given us false advice in the hope of generating more repair business.
this would be like a dentist telling patients to eat as much sugary/fizzy/acidic stuff as they can and as frequently as they possibly can!
    regards

    Hi Heinrich
Can't wait for your finished product pictures and results.
Some of your pictures suggest that you have windscreen wiper problems!
    Am I correct?
    Regards
    Mat

    Theo is absolutely right.
Try the duct tape and if it works for you, get the proper spacers/centering rings.
I have used tape and it has worked very well in the past.
    Don't give up ziggy.
    Regards.

    wipers stopped working

    Hi everone
    remember me!
    I feel pretty chuffed.
I have just dismantled and put back together the wiper system.
IT IS AN ABSOLUTELY AND RIDICULOUSLY STUPID DESIGN. IT SEEMS THAT IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO NEED CHANGING OR REPAIRING, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DOES!
THEY MUST HAVE FINISHED THE CAR, STOOD THERE ADMIRING IT'S GORGEOUS LOOKS UNTIL IT STARTED TO RAIN....."OOHH S**T WE FORGOT TO PUT IN WIPERS" !!!
it is a very finicky task, but as long as you don't want to cut corners, it will ultimately be done.
There are no corners to be cut and no quick fixes just pure tedious step by step procedure carried out patiently.
You do not want to miss a step. So make plently of notes and better still photos to refer back to if you need.
This is certainly not a job for outdoors in wet climate. It must be done under cover as anything can delay your job leaving the car unprotected with rain getting directly into the cabin.
Any way...my problem was not the wiper motor. It was purely that the wiper arm spindles were rusted and finally seized.
Reading through the forum, other members experiences and my own I would say that we are experiencing various stages of a problem brewing up due to rusting and ultimate seizure of to the wiper arm spindle on the driver-side (the one with the motorised pressure system).
The passenger side wiper arm spindle although had corroded and pitted very badly it still was moving quite freely. Whereas the drivers side was almost unmovable and straining the wiper motor causing it to shut off.
As I said I've just put the car back together, and the wipers are working... but there is some form of timing/functionality problem.
I have intermittent, supperwash, fast and pull back function and all with water spray but no medium speed function. wipers arms also tuck under the bonnet fine.
I'll check the fuses and so on let you know more as soon as I can.
    Regards
    Mat

    bad idling

    hello ziggy
I never run on empty tank (that is in the red).
You are most likely to pick up the dirt or water from the bottom of the petrol tank. the older the car/petrol tank the higher chance of dirt etc.
However I don't know which model you have.
I believe the older 840 (that is excluding the 4.4) had a problem with cylinder lining wash-out caused by, to say the least, poor manufacturing process and or exacerbated by poor petrol quality etc.
Hence the BMW warrenty to replace some of these engines within 90,000 miles of production.
Apparently if all of sudden, your car starts to idle poorly below 800rpm you need to worry.
I so much hope your problem with poor idle is the simpler of the two evils.
check out your fuel delivery and filter system; any ticking sound related to dirty petrol injector, etc.
If so I presume you could either physically clean out the fuel delivery system or use some chemical additives in the petrol to help along the dirt away.
A nice long run on the motorway at high revs and speeds may do the trick particularly with fuel line cleaning additives.
Hey, don't burn out your engine though.
    Best wishes.
    Mat.
    Am I right everyone???

very sorry to hear that. i know how you feel.
are you sure you havn't let a girl down?
only a very sick male would want to scratch your car.

Re: Need Help. Windshield Wiper issues

    hi
    i'm having wiper trouble too.
as soon as i get anywhere i'll let you know.
look in the forum, i had asked for help about this subject.
having looked into a number of options and suggestions, i too hope its the motor and not some electronic/computer governed problem.
please lest me know if you get anywhere with yours.

hi bimmerman, does your friend by any chance accept to do his magic on other people's cars?
he sounds like the kind of experts you need on your side when you keep a car a difficult as 8s.

    8888

    Hi Tony
"8" is supposed to be a lucky number.
    Here is something for you!
I bought a Triumph Stag on a date very much like that 18 years or so ago (18/08/88).
2yrs a go a so called Triumph Stag specialist in Scotland took it away for a full cosmetic rebuild at a cost of £7000.
The "son of a whatever" returned the car nearly a year later pretty much the same as he took it.
He had just replaced and swapped some parts, stolen a few original parts off mine etc and put on some second hand alloys I had given him myself (with the same old tyres that were on my car when he took it).
Of course I refused to accept the car back.
For the past year I have been battling to get some form of justice via my solicitors at great cost.
The thing is that the "B" didn't know I had some pictures of the car before it went to him.
However, since there never was a written estimate/quote this is apparently difficult to fight out and unpredictable as far as the court outcome would be.
I have had some so-called experts look at the car since.
One of them was an RAC chap and one was a motor traders engineer specialist.
Although both of them point out the poor workmanship particularly paintwork they could not put their neck on the line as they had not seen the car befoprehand and have no estimate to go by.

    ARE YOU BORED YET?

Never mind., I'll carry on, wake you up when I'm done!

Anyway if you wondered why I let a total stranger to con me and pick my car and deliver it 1 year later worse than it was? ......The "B" came recommended by an area coordinator for the Stag Owner Club ( which I have been a member of for nearly as long as I have had the Stag) and at the time I was moving my house, family and work/business from England to Scotland. The "B" on every telephone conversation I had with him during this period about the progress of my Stag's restoration tantalised me with fob stories of how beautiful the car was looking and how everyone that had saw it was drooling over the quality of the restoration.

Bottom line is, ..this issue has got me so fed up that I have considered to stop pursuing getting my car back.

The moral of this story is that...

    DON'T BE A TRUSTING IDIOT!

I bet you wish you had never posted your milometer reading (nice car tony)

By any chance if any one out there feels they would like to help with this issue, I would greatly appreciate your input.
    Mat.
