No, its more like a low frequency dull vibration, like something is out of balance. The YouTube sound is weird though!

No Benji, the vibration is really only felt through the seat of my pants! As if you are driving over rumble strips in the road. Steering is fine, no wheel wobble or anything like that. I guess, like all sounds/vibrations they are hard to define in an email post.

Thanks for a quick response Arnie. The car has recently been serviced by BMW so guess it has the "correct" oil.

When I first drive the car I get a dull shuddering/vibration apparent when I apply the throttle, it diminishes when I back off the throttle and disappears when I get past 1500/2000 revs or when the car is warmed up. I suspect the propshaft rubber thrust ring - has anyone had this problem?

This query relates to my 2001 4.4i X5, but it has a very similar engine to my 1999 840CiA so thought the more technical guys on the site could advise - when starting the X5 the hydraulic lifters clatter for a second then go quiet. This is more pronounced if the car hasn't been used for a few days - is this OK and will it do any harm?

Just received this from Pistonheads:

Reply from "vendor":
Hello, The car is still for sale. It comes with all the papers, MOT left for 12 months and TAX for 8 months. It is in MINT condition, never smoked inside the car. Service history made only at authorized dealers. It has clean title. I am a registered and verified user of PistonHeads.com. There are also other people interested to buy the car. I will sell it to the first person who will agree to start the transaction through PistonHeads.com and agree with the price and all the terms for an accurate and secure deal. I will offer you more details if you are prepared.

You are welcome to use my 840 Ci Sport, only one in Imola Red with Lotus White interior and Imola Red inserts. All as original. I have got rid of the AC Schnitzer copy wheels and gone back to the original M-Type 11 wheels!

I've emailed the seller requesting further details including VIN. I've come across scams like this when looking for my X5. The usual response is that they are abroad and the car cannot be exported or is no longer required. Asking that you lodge a deposit and the car location and papers will be released - yah di dah!

I check specific gravity and change as indicated on the service schedule. We live on an exposed hillside and the car is not garaged so I don't want to risk a frozen block!!

Just a thought, if the Wrenchfest is the day before and some will have a fair distance to drive, it doesn't leave much time to get your cars prepared for Gaydon the next day, especially if the weather is not too good. Maybe the Wrenchfest should be on another weekend?

Can you price the following, presuming fully operational:
CD Changer
Bavarian Business RDS (mine has faulty pixels)CHeers

Jud,
Forgive my ignorance. What does the "A" in 840CiA stand for? I thought the car in question is an 840 Ci Sport. -
-
It's the latter I am afraid. I've just stumbled across this website which might be of interest to some of you wanting alternative sources of OEM components.

Last year there was no organisation about the way in which the cars were presented. The 8 is such a striking shape that some thought about the display is required. For example, if the only space for us is in a line, then lets get all the noses perfectly aligned, or maybe we go for a rainbow display with the car colours Red, Orange, Yellow etc. Something striking rather than a car-park full of cars. We also need to get an Exhibitors pass from the BMW Club in order to enter the display area, otherwise you won't be let in. That's how it was last year anyway.
-
Arnie, Sometimes there are more pixels visible, so you get part of the station details - just the same as the OBC (MID) unit.
-
Steve,
I would be interested in this as the radio in my 8 shows no pixels and the Instrument Cluster in my X5 has sporadic missing pixels. -
I thought this would cause some strong responses! I agree that the E31 is a beautiful and rare car, that's why I fell in love with it and had to have one. Yes, my Honda is boring and there is no comparison in driving experience but it is damn reliable!
We went out in our X5 today and ran out of petrol, despite the fuel gauge showing 1/4 full, the OBC showing a range of 140 miles and the reserve light not having come on. I haven't a clue where to start in trying to sort it out and just feel it seems to be one thing after another.
Yesterday, as it was a clear, sunny, dry day, I unwrapped my 8 to check all was well. Started her up and switched on the radio. No Pixels showing at all!
BMW reward our devoted loyalty by charging the earth for spares. No wonder they are one of the few profitable car companies!

Small bubbles on roof corner, which seemed slight, revealed significant and structural rot under windscreen attachment area when paintwork removed. Similar bubbles appeared on rear of roof against rear screen and on front edge of sunroof.
