I had mine changed on buying the car from BMW (Approved Used) - that was at 60K miles. I am at 70K now. I too, cannot believe that any fluid can sustain high temperatures and molecular "thrashing" between gear teeth without some long-term adverse effect.

KDS Wheel Alignment
The BMW KDS check covers:
Spring test (I think this is the height of the car)
Design condition (Compares your results to the OEM spec)
Tyres
Tire air pressure
Tire tread depth
Tire marking
Rear Axle
Camber
Toe
Geometric driving axis (makes sure car is not crabbing)
Front Axle:
Camber
Toe
Track differential angle
Max steering lock on curve inside wheel
Caster
SAI
SetbackIf you fit the Phoenix Camber plates then have a KDS, it will show the Camber as being out of tolerance. You must tell them not to try and adjust it!

I have found that the hand-brake shoe retaining springs can sometimes come loose and drag on the inside of the drum - you definitely need to strip the drum and check this.

Gerry,
A superb job. The BMW Approved bodyshop that did mine did not mask the whole car as your guy has done. This resulted in tiny spots of over-spray on other parts of the body work, just noticeable if you look closely and get the light right - fortunately they polish off, but bloody annoying.Bye the way, are the hay bales indicative of an environment-friendly workshop construction???

One thing I did notice - call me "anal" if you like - but that floor is CLEAN!!! I LOVE a clean and tidy workshop!!!!

I wonder if she suffers from under-steer?

I guess this makes our 8's even rarer!

I bought a 2001 BMW X5 Sport this weekend, with the M62 4.4 engine (same as my 840 Ci Sport). BUT - the X5 sounds savage - just how I would want my 8 to sound - The performance is great too - how do they get the X5 sounding like a real mean V8 when the 840 sounds so muted? Did they tweak the M62 engine, anyone know?

This is critical to sort out this out. I ended up having a new roof fitted and we strongly suspect that water accumulated in the left front corner of the roof due to a faulty drain pipe.

I have a plastic mesh container which I stand in a plastic bowl. I fill the mesh with silica gel crystal/pellets and leave it in the interior of the car. This takes the moisture out of the interior and stops any mould/mildew developing.
I have removed all under-wing plastic trim, power-washed, dried and covered in wayoxl. Under bonnet, I use a can of WD40 and spray everywhere! The exposed brake and fuel line pipes underneath have been covered in grease, using my fingers the ensure it is worked on top of the pipe (next to the body).
The batteries are important too! Use a battery-tender that you can keep switched on to keep them in peak condition.
You might think about tyre "slippers" to stop any flat spots developing - depending on how long you are keeping it stationary.
Make sure a cover is well tied down, because if it flaps too much it will scratch your paintwork.

I definitely don't want to miss it with my car this time!

I've got a battery powered Belkin FM unit but find the signal drops out and the quality of sound is not too good.

New Roof
Hi Peter,
They did a nice job, they removed the whole roof skin and sunroof, spot welded new roof skin and fitted new sunroof. Cost £2,000 inc parts, labour, paint & VAT. -
Has anyone fitted a direct input for an MP3 player into the standard radio/cassette unit? Just wondered where the best place/wires etc are for interfacing a Creative Zen?

There is a hole at the front of the battery tray and this is above a similar sized hole in the body shell that exits onto the exhaust heat shield beneath. I think it should be possible, therefore, to flood under the tray with water to neutralise the acid, then dry with compressed air and hair dryer before squirting WD40 or other anti-rust fluid down between the holder and the body shell.

Looks really nice! From the photo's the standard of workmanship looks very high. My handbrake and gear shift "boots" are the contra colour to the door trims so in your case they should be light grey. I think if they were blue it would be too much! I've never seen an 8 with an armrest like that - was it out of another model?
-
Thanks Reinhard, I thought the battery holder plate was welded in place and the threads related to something under the rear wings being bolted up into the body shell. I will have a poke around underneath.
Steve5 - Yes, please let me have the details of your man in Pershore. I don't have workshop facilities at home yet and I was not aware of any local specialist - hence using Robert Sterns.
