    Morning all,

I recently fitted 2 new batteries into my 840 sport, since doing that however as soon as I turn the ignition on I get warnings for pretty much all of the bulb failures which it runs through in sequence. I've tripple checked all the connctions and battery earth points in the boot and cant get the errors to go away, has anyone seen this before? Any hints greatly aprreciated as its stopping me getting the car MOT'd to put back on the road.

Very true words Reinhard, indeed by 100,000miles many manufacturers will consider the car at the end of its life despite the fact my 840 still drives like new and is fantastically smooth and quiet!

I put my car to the local BMW / AUDI / PORSCHE specialist who have looked after my Boxster and my wifes more modern 3 series. They charged £190 which wasnt cheap however they also ran a full gearbox diagnostic to ensure everything is healthy and I'm very happy with the end result.

Massive difference when cold Timm, before it was hesitant and a little jerky when changing gear until it had warmed up. Now its smooth as silk both hot and cold and no more jumping into neutral!

So much for the gearbox oil being for life!, saying that though its lasted 117k miles so cant grumble really.

    Cheers

Just a quick update on this one, had the gearbox oil changed a few days ago and the problem is cured, in fact the box is smoother than its ever been hot or cold!

Big thanks to everyone who made the effort to help me out with this, very much appreciated!

Thanks for that Bonza39, just out of interest what were your symptoms prior to this? I'm thinking the gearbox oil change as previously suggested is probably the best way forward.

Thanks Tim, the Instrument cluster says the box is in D when this happens. What tends to happen is that if I dont notice it and try to pull away (obviously causing the engine to rev) it'll go into gear with a nasty clunk as the revs are not at idle, fortunately I'm getting pretty adept at avoiding this now. If I do let this happen it will however generate the "Trans Fail Prog" limp home mode which can be reset by pulling over and switching the ignition off for 30 secs or so.

I'm wondering if there is some system that sends the box into neutral when braking hard but is not engaging back into drive when my foot comes off the brake ? As I say, the dropping into Neutral is normally only after I've braked hard when the car is cold. I suppose this could be TPS related but I'm wondering if there is a sensor from the brake pedal causing problems ?

Thanks kindly chaps, just with regards to the kickdown switch, is there any way of removing and testing it? It obviously works when I put my foot to the floor but I'm wondering if there might be some sort of intermittent short?

Is there a diagram that shows the removal proceess for it as I couldnt see any obvious way of removal?

Thanks kindly Timm, mine is the 98 4.4 Sport so the reset I assume wont work with mine?

Assume by manual shift you mean move the lever into Sport/Tiptronic? Worth a try!

Thanks kindly for the suggestions. I also have an OBD reader and the Carsoft BMW software and there is an option there to clear all engine parameters which I believe does the same thing and have tried previously with no luck.

Will certainly give it a try though and report back!

Still getting this problem, have checked the TPS in the engine bay (connections and Ohms) and the kickdown pedal connections and all seems normal.

The problem only seems to occur when the car is cold and usually only after braking reasonably hard, seems like the box is dropping into neutral to help braking but then not coming back into drive when I go to pull away? To cure the problem I have to drop into neutral and give the engine a quick rev then its fine to go back into drive as normal.

Anyone any ideas whats causing this? The box is fine when warm and smooth as silk with the changes so dont think its anything mechanical, sounds like a sensor somewhere to me.

Just pulled the error codes but the jist of it is (its in German on my system so this is a rough translation)

    120 (106) - Kick down activated with throttle pedal position < 70%

Would this be the throttle position sensor? If so where is it located so I can test / replace it? Is this at the pedal or in the engine bay?

I'm having a very occasional gearbox fault appear and am thinking these are at fault, does anyone know of a way of testing them?

My problem is that sometimes when I stop while in drive the gearbox will drop into neutral and refuse to engage. A quick pop into neutral, a wee rev and back into drive and all is well, only seems to do it once during a journey usually at the start. Other than that the box changes perfectly smoothly and all else is well.

Thinking of selling her shortly and want it to be 100% for the new owner so would like to get this sorted.

    Any tips greatly appreciated.

Before I moved house I kept my Ferrari in a lock up with no power and had a very similar product (not one of the cheap £9.99 jobs) situatied on the roof of the lock-up to keep the battery topped up.

It worked well in the summer however during the winter it just didnt produce enough power, possibly due to the rather cloudy and miserable winters we get here in Aberdeen!!

Saying that, with the poor quality Italian electrics in the Ferrari the power drain even when sitting can be quite considerable so it might well do the job with the 8....

Now thats spooky, I've just bought an 8 series and used to own a Starion Turbo many years ago which is the silver car parked next to the 8 in this video!

Seems I have similar taste to Prince, not sure if thats a good or a bad thing!

Actually, whilst I think about it I was just wondering who 8 owners in Aberdeen use to look after your cars?

Bavaria Auto Werke was my first thought as I tend to avoid dealers with older cars as they usually dont know what to do with them.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Congrats, sounds like you've picked up a nice 8

Nice choice of cars.... but the Freelander

Please tell me you have a few acres of marsh land to play about in, and it doesn't spend its time on the tarmac ;)

Cheers Paul, yes I live in the middle of nowhere and have plenty of muddy fields to drive it around in! Will be pretty much essential when the snow arrives!

Sparkles - you may very well have seen me around Aberdeen as I sometimes take it to work if its a nice day, tis black with the reg "DEZ" which is a bit of a give away I suppose!! Seem to be a good few 8 owners on here from Aberdeen from what I can see!!

Well chaps, thanks kindly for your advice which I followed, I am indeed Flyboy251 and shortly to be the new owner of the aforementioned 840!!

The chap is just going to put a fresh MOT on it and remove his private plate and I should hopefully pick it up next week or the week after if I can find a slot in my diary!

So the fleet list will now read...

    97 BMW 840ci
    00 Porsche Boxster S
    92 Ferrari 348ts
    03 BMW 318ise
    99 Freelander XEI

My missus is moaning already about me buying another toy but I said I'd sell my Rover 75 barge to make room for it, fair deal if you ask me!! ;)

Will post some pictures when I get her home!, cant wait!

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions, I'm sure there will be plenty more!

Thanks Paul, I'm pretty much down to 2 cars now.

First is the 97 4.4 Sport with the Mtech kit from original. It looks to be in cracking condition, 2 owners with only a couple of very minor imperfections on the exterior, interior is spotless. The history looks good and the owner is very honest and knowlegable having owned it for several years. Its always also had genuine BMW parts throughout its life from what I hav established by locating the owner on another forum and trawling his posts ! (sneaky eh!). The mileage is 110,000.

The second car is a 95 4.0, again in cracking condition, about £500 cheaper by the time I haggle but only 77k miles, again 2 owners with a good history and lots of reciepts. Owner is currently a trader who bought this for himself via the trade a year ago as it was such a nice car. He likes the old Merc SL's though so is switching back to them which is why he's selling it. Seems an honest and fairly knowledgable chap, especially about classic mercs!

    http://search.autotrader.co.uk…n_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

I know the 4.4 is a better car but is it that much better to consider it over a 4.0 with 30k miles less ? I'll probably only put 5-6k miles on either per year so maybe I could live with the higher miles on the 4.4.

Does the price for the 4.4 look about right or a tad high if I was to get it for £5k ?

Anyone any comments on the merits of both? Advice form exisiting owners greatly appreciated!
