A few more pictures you can find in the gallery :winkwink:

Have no idea why this simple subject starts to be so emotional ?

Ok, let's then find some other opinions. After quick search I've found sth like that:

    http://www.utextension.utk.edu…tions/spfiles/SP268-Q.pdf
(please see par. 2 in Precautions When Using Synthetic Oils (page 2)

    http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-En…Oil/Synthetics/Myths.aspx
(opposite opinion by Mobil - nothing to worry, all are only myths)

    http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/oil-synthetic.htm
    (sth in the middle)

    http://theserviceadvisor.com/oil.htm
(again not recommended in older engines over 80.000 miles)

    etc...

So the confusion exists. Where's the truth ? Most probably somewhere in the middle, like usually.
But, of course, I'm not an expert.

Let me then rise another question: can anyone guarantee Adrew that the process of switching to full sythetic in his particular case will go without leakage and oil-channels problems ?

I didn't (fortunately) see personally such leakage (didn't have to many old cars driving on mineral oil in my until now short but quite interesting life ), but also I don't think it's just another "urban legend".

I believe Reinhard put it the best way - it's good to check the inside condition of the engine before such decision.

Anyway it's good that Andrew asked for help before the process. He will then make decision based on all the forum members experience.

and allow some leakage that should stop after the once-dry seals are re-wetted and swell.

Should stop but what if will not stop ? Would you like to experiment in your own car ? I wouldn't...

Anyway, it's just a warnig, decision is all yours.

Asking for an oil recommendation is asking for trouble :D
Those discussions follow the same path worldwide.
Ask me. I am running 10W60 in all engines. No troubles at all.
    See ;)
    Reinhard

We are discussing changing the mineral in the old engine into synthetic, not just driving.

The synthetic oil will clean your engine of old oil wastes, which can block the oil channels, secondly the engine will almost for sure start leaking through the old simmerings. It’s too old for such change.
The best what you can do is to take the semi-synthetic or a good brand mineral oil. And stick to factory specifications – in our climate 15W40 or 15W50 should be just fine, especially when you don’t drive in winter.

    Sorry for ruining your plans...

change my oil from mineral ty fyully sinthetic

Bad idea, Fatandre. It's asking for trouble.

Finally we have a schedule. For the costs reasons we had to give up the idea of the driving-training, but we will organize the meeting the classical way instead. It means
    “cruising and sightseeing”.

The meeting will take place during the weekend of 4-5.07:

    3.07
    - arrival in the hotel

    4.07:
    - a whole day round trip, the program is still under development, for sure we will visit some interesting places and have a lunch together
    - in the evening the night party with barbecue etc...

    5.07
    - small round trip and coming home

We will gather in the Hotel Edison:

    http://www.hoteledison.com.pl/aindex.htm (German)

    http://www.hoteledison.com.pl/aindex.htm (English)

It's nicely located hotel near the lake.

By booking please mention "BMW 850 meeting". You can also always contact me directly and I will gladly assist in formalities.

I hope that you will consider visiting us and seeing a part of our neighborhood an interesting option,

    See you

    PS
Armin, could you, please, make a translation ?
