Well done for keeping going when it gets extremely frustrating - there must be a better way of doing this, possibly the special tool makes it quicker!

My E28 did the same, it was a spiral spring within the door catch than snapped....

My friend over on Bimmerforums.co.uk bought one for £10k, it was a bit scabby here and there, but was a runner....

Hate to stop a sale - but you can re-thread the head without removing the head for around £50 - a member did just this on a 740i last month.

Of course we are active here! And, there's quite a few of us in the UK that run E31's on a shoestring, I'm one of them. The E31 is brilliant for DIY work, as easy as any car I owned. The 840ci you have is fitted with the M60 V8 and is one of the most reliable engines BMW produced with its double primary chains and idlers. They don't like being stored away though, they much prefer being used on a regular basis.
The ABS light is probably just the ABS return pump - a fault that occurs on cars of a certain age, especially if the car is not used for a length of time. I work on my own cars on the drive outside, I don't have a garage and don't feel the need for one except for when it gets cold!
Before you do any work though, replace both batteries - these old BMW's hate low voltages - details here:

My new 650i is similarly boring - much prefer the 840ci for a good blasting, the 650i is just too efficient. There is little feel to the steering on the 650i whereas you can feel every bit of gravel on the road in the E31 - much more fun.

Yes, blooming nuisance! Here's how I did my one:

Regarding the AHK - I've never had to worry about that as I don't have it! But the advice you have given is right, if there is the slightest malfunction it will be locked in the centre, safe, position - and the light comes on. Other members would be able to advise you further as to the safe thing to do - but the warning lights are bulbs - which can be removed:

For selling I use Pistonheads and Ebay at the same time

Hello Martin, the parts are available (at least here in the UK), but are expensive. The part that is probably causing the lack of symmetry is the strut itself - part 1 here:

Some members give up on the EDC and fit standard struts and springs as they are cheaper.
One thing springs to mind though - when the EDC (Electronic Damping Control) fails, the EDC light should come on - and stay on - is that happening? Also, they could try their tests in Sport Mode rather than Comfort mode - that might make a difference.

Looking absolutely perfect!
