I want to check to see if any chip upgrade work has been carried out on my engine control unit before I commit to buying some Wokke chips, as these seem to be the best choice for an upgrade. However, can someone tell me where the ECU box is please? Is it readily accessible and clear to see what chips are already in? I have a '93 850CI. Does anyone know what the fitting instructions consist of as well please. I'm an electronic engineer so quite happy handling the component chips, which I guess are EEPROM's?

    Thanks

i managed to find that the last service was in the UK only 1600 miles ago and the BMW service agent near Stafford has agreed to forward to me all the work that was done except customer id information. Great! The oil used was Castrol semi-synthetic magnetec so I have all the information necessary to continue with the service program. It turns out that in 179,000 miles, it's only ever been in 2 BMW garages!

    Thanks :winkwink:

    Stainless Exhaust Option

I often get over to the UK and work near Peterborough. I phoned up the sister branch at Peterborough (of the Basingstoke specialist) and they have quoted me £850 for a full replacement system for my V12 850CI. This includes the Lambda tapping points and includes VAT and fitment. I'll probably leave it there for a day or two while I do my work and then ship /drive back to Guernsey. Very comprehensive lifetime transferable warranty as well.

    Thanks for the tip.

I've been considering the first oil change in my 850 but the last service was not at a BMW service agent I believe. I'm therefore not sure what oil is in the vehicle. I would like to use BMW synthetic oil but do not want to part mix or have residue from ex-mineral oil. What is the best method to migrate to synthetic? Is it Drain at running temperature, use some form of flushing oil? then run for 10 mins. Then finally replace with fully synthetic oils. Opinions on this would be grateful.

    850CI

I'm sure this has been discussed at length on here but my 850CI stereo has a few duff pixels and the sound is tired. I would like to replace it with a decent Pioneer or Sony system and also upgrade the loudspeakers to match. I do not want to detract much from the original look so I can get a similar modern orange display option and black bezel but does anyone know the best stereo that would be ideal to fit in as a replacement please.

    Thanks

When considering replacing an entire exhaust system without CAT, what is the best option to consider with the Lambda oxygen sensors? Is it best to keep them or is it best to have them incorporated in any replacement system so that control of fuel mixture can be maintained?

    Thanks

    Anti-theft wheel nut identified

    Great tip Reinhard,

My anti-theft ident was found. As you say a BMW tech produced the master box of all the adapters and Bingo! we found the right one. £5.30 delivered next day. Thanks for your help.

    Cheers

As part of my ongoing works on my new BMW 850CI, I thought I would get the wheels balanced today. I went to the garage and got the wheel covers off and there was the dreaded anti-theft wheel nut. Does anyone know if they were delivered fitted? These look like 10-14 internally splined nuts. Does anyone know if this is a standerd part? I guess I'll have to take an imprint of it and take it to my BMW garage and see if I can buy one?

    Thanks

    850CI

Does anyone know of a UK supplier of suitable stock gas struts for bonnet and boot for '93 850CI please in the UK? I've tried a few today on the phone and they struggle with the model. Any help welcomed, thanks!

Now I am the proud owner of an 850CI in Quartz Black, I would love to have a printed copy of a workshop manual in my garage. Does anyone have access to a .pdf full workshop manual to download that i could print and bind. All I've seen is the page by page E31 on line manual. Tough when you are under the bonnet doing stuff.

    Cheers
