Les pages proposent des fonctions supplémentaires via de petites icônes placées discrètement à côté des fil d'Ariane. Cela présente plusieurs inconvénients : Non seulement les icônes passent facilement inaperçues pour les nouveaux utilisateurs, mais elles sont aussi souvent difficiles à interpréter sans légende. Dans l'affichage mobile, les boutons ont été affichés dans le menu et sont ainsi plus faciles à comprendre, mais inversement, ils ne sont pas immédiatement visibles.
Outre les icônes à côté des fil d'Ariane, le nombre de boutons d'action (par exemple "Nouveau sujet") a augmenté avec chaque version. Par exemple, avec l'introduction de la fonction "Messages officiels", un bouton a été ajouté qui renvoie au premier message officiel. De nombreux boutons sont plus difficiles à saisir, en particulier pour les nouveaux utilisateurs, et peuvent rapidement engendrer des frustrations.
Nous nous sommes attaqués à ces problèmes avec WoltLab Suite 5.5 et avons fondamentalement remanié aussi bien le menu fil d'Ariane que les boutons d'action et trouvé un nouvel emplacement pour les fonctions et les boutons. Les boutons d'action ont été réduits et il n'y a plus qu'un seul gros bouton primaire au maximum sur chaque page. Les autres boutons ont été déplacés directement sous ces boutons d'action et visuellement réduits. Les actions les plus fréquemment utilisées sont affichées sous forme de boutons indépendants et les autres actions, qui ne sont pas aussi souvent utilisées, sont présentées dans un menu déroulant séparé "Afficher plus". Ainsi, les actions sont non seulement facilement accessibles sur un ordinateur de bureau traditionnel, mais elles peuvent également être facilement saisies et utilisées dans la présentation mobile sur un smartphone ou une tablette.
Dans les grands forums, il est plus fréquent de voir des sujets isolés avec beaucoup d'activité qui reviennent régulièrement dans les dernières activités ou qui augmentent le nombre de sujets non lus. Il est tout à fait normal qu'en tant qu'utilisateur, on ne veuille pas lire tous les sujets. C'est d'autant plus énervant lorsqu'un sujet particulier revient sans cesse sur le devant de la scène, même si l'on ne souhaite pas le lire. Dans le passé, il était déjà possible de masquer des forums entiers. Avec la prochaine version, il sera désormais possible d'ignorer de manière ciblée certains sujets et ainsi non seulement de filtrer le sujet parmi les sujets non lus, mais aussi de masquer toute activité dans le sujet.
Aucune notification ne sera générée pour les mentions ou les citations d'un sujet ignoré. La fonction existante "Les utilisateurs peuvent ignorer ce forum" complète la fonctionnalité en ce sens que les sujets des forums qui ne peuvent pas être ignorés ne peuvent pas non plus être ignorés. Cela permet de s'assurer que des informations importantes, telles que des sujets d'annonce décisifs, ne passent pas inaperçues.
Nous avons également profité de cette fonctionnalité pour remplacer complètement la boîte de dialogue d'abonnement aux sujets par un nouveau menu déroulant. Cela rend le choix du statut du sujet (abonné ou ignoré) plus simple et plus intuitif pour l'utilisateur.
Jusqu'à présent, l'abonnement à des forums permettait d'être informé de manière fiable des nouveaux sujets dans le forum. Pour recevoir des notifications sur les nouveaux messages dans le forum, il était toutefois nécessaire de s'abonner séparément à ces sujets. En particulier lors de l'abonnement à des forums existants, il était très fastidieux de s'abonner à tous les sujets déjà contenus pour recevoir les notifications correspondantes.
Avec la prochaine version, nous proposons une solution à ce dilemme sous la forme d'une option supplémentaire pour les forums : s'abonner aux forums et aux thèmes d'un forum. Cela signifie que l'abonné sera ainsi informé non seulement des nouveaux sujets, mais aussi des nouvelles contributions dans les sujets du forum. En même temps, nous avons ici aussi adapté l'IU et placé le choix du statut dans un menu déroulant afin de faciliter le choix de l'utilisateur.
Les forums peuvent être ignorés et donc masqués à l'aide de la fonction "Forums activés / désactivés", mais cette fonction était très cachée sur la page d'accueil des forums, dans les fil d'Ariane. Grâce à la révision de l'interface utilisateur de l'abonnement aux forums, il est désormais possible de placer un autre bouton. Il est donc logique que l'on puisse désormais ignorer les forums via le menu déroulant. Cela offre également l'avantage que la fonction se comporte désormais de manière analogue à la nouvelle fonction "Ignorer les sujets".
La sélection de la "réponse la plus utile" dans les sujets est devenue une évidence pour les utilisateurs. Celle-ci doit, surtout pour les sujets complexes et longs, aider les tiers à trouver la réponse à leur question et ainsi à s'orienter dans le sujet. La fonction "Marquer les sujets comme terminés" doit servir d'orientation aux utilisateurs potentiels qui souhaitent aider, afin de savoir quels sujets ne sont pas encore terminés pour les utilisateurs et qui a encore besoin d'aide.
Cependant, dès qu'une réponse la plus utile a été marquée dans un sujet, le sujet est généralement clos pour l'utilisateur. Il est donc logique de marquer le sujet avec le marquage Réponse la plus utile comme Terminé. Cela permet non seulement d'éviter un clic à la personne qui cherche de l'aide, mais aussi de rendre la liste des sujets plus claire en la marquant comme "Terminé".
Les utilisateurs s'inscrivent souvent dans les forums pour poser des questions. Il est d'autant plus frustrant que le nouvel utilisateur ne trouve pas le moyen d'ouvrir un nouveau sujet et qu'il abandonne après quelques recherches et ferme la page. Pour permettre aux nouveaux utilisateurs d'ouvrir plus facilement un sujet, il existe désormais un bouton global "Créer un sujet" sur la liste des forums. Dès que ce bouton est pressé, une superposition s'ouvre avec la sélection du forum souhaité. Dès que le forum est sélectionné ici, l'utilisateur est redirigé vers le formulaire "Créer un sujet" pour le forum en question et peut ainsi poser sa question rapidement et facilement.
Avec la version précédente, WoltLab Suite 5.4, nous nous sommes surtout concentrés sur des révisions techniques et avons ainsi effectué un travail préparatoire important pour la WoltLab Suite 5.5. Dans cette version, l'accent est mis sur les révisions fonctionnelles de l'interface utilisateur ainsi que sur les améliorations de l'utilisation et de l'accessibilité. Avec cet article, nous souhaitons donner un avant-goût de la prochaine version WoltLab Suite 5.5.
La structure et le fonctionnement du menu utilisateur ont pour l'essentiel fait leurs preuves pendant de nombreuses années, mais quelques faiblesses se sont révélées au fil du temps, auxquelles nous nous attaquons directement avec la version 5.5 de WoltLab Suite. Le menu redessiné et techniquement modernisé vise à éliminer quatre problèmes essentiels de la mise en œuvre précédente :
Lors de la refonte, une attention particulière a été accordée à la création d'une structure claire grâce à un formatage ciblé, afin de pouvoir saisir plus rapidement et plus facilement les contenus. Les entrées de menu pour les paramètres ont été réorganisées et renvoient désormais à la section entière, les sous-rubriques n'ayant plus qu'un caractère informatif. Ce remaniement permet désormais une utilisation confortable et claire, même en combinaison avec de nombreuses extensions installées.
Les éléments de menu pour les notifications, les conversations et la modération ont également été revus et utilisent un concept de présentation et d'utilisation uniforme. La structure s'inspire fortement de l'ancienne mise en page afin de permettre une transition en douceur par rapport aux versions précédentes. Les boutons d'icônes, en particulier, ont été visuellement agrandis et offrent des zones de clic plus grandes afin de pouvoir les utiliser confortablement sur les écrans tactiles.
Les notifications de bureau ne sont plus activées automatiquement, elles peuvent être activées ou désactivées via la boîte affichée dans les notifications. La boîte ne s'affiche que tant qu'aucune décision n'a été prise et disparaît ensuite automatiquement.
La conception des couleurs des menus peut être adaptée directement via l'éditeur de style, la palette de couleurs permet alors d'adapter confortablement toutes les valeurs de couleurs utilisées et offre l'aperçu en direct habituel de l'apparence. Les styles existants sont entièrement compatibles avec ces modifications, mais selon les couleurs utilisées, il peut être judicieux d'harmoniser les couleurs des nouveaux menus.
Lors de la mise en œuvre, nous avons veillé dès le début à permettre la meilleure utilisation possible du clavier et des outils d'aide (par exemple lecteur d'écran ou VoiceOver). Outre l'utilisation systématique d'attributs ARIA appropriés, nous y parvenons également grâce à une gestion active des focus. Pour les développeurs, nous avons créé une API sûre qui permet de mettre à disposition ses propres contenus dans le menu tout en garantissant l'accessibilité.
L'en-tête de page a été remanié et offre une bien meilleure expérience utilisateur et davantage de fonctionnalités. Le logo a été déplacé sur le côté gauche et dispose de plus d'espace grâce à un espacement adapté, de sorte que les logos larges peuvent également être intégrés de manière judicieuse. Sur la droite se trouvent le menu principal, le menu utilisateur ainsi qu'un bouton pour accéder directement à la recherche.
Avec le remaniement du menu principal, les points de menu s'ouvrent directement à l'intérieur de la liste et forment ainsi une structure facilement compréhensible, dont le chemin est reconnaissable à tout moment. Ces adaptations profitent également à l'accessibilité, pour laquelle nous avons pu obtenir de nettes améliorations. En outre, cela nous permet de réaliser un concept d'utilisation uniforme avec l'interface d'administration afin de faciliter l'accès aux nouveaux utilisateurs.
Les notifications sont de loin l'aspect le plus important du menu utilisateur et prendront une place plus importante à l'avenir. Le menu avec ses innombrables liens fait place à un écran épuré avec des onglets faciles d'accès pour appeler les différents sous-points. Lorsque le menu utilisateur est appelé pour la première fois, les notifications s'ouvrent directement et sont donc directement accessibles sans effort supplémentaire.
Les menus utilisateur remaniés sont réutilisés dans cette vue et s'intègrent directement dans l'affichage ; si le contenu est trop long, il peut être automatiquement déroulé. C'est ici que la meilleure optimisation de ces menus pour l'utilisation tactile prend tout son sens et offre une utilisation habituelle aussi bien sur le smartphone que sur l'ordinateur de bureau.
Martin et moi travaillons sur la mise à jour majeure du logiciel de forum WoltLab version 5.5. Avec cette version, des améliorations notables seront visibles dans l'utilisation de l'interface web.
Nous avons bien entendu commencé par sauvegarder le forum, les données et les bases de données sur notre NAS local, en plus des sauvegardes quotidiennes effectuées chez Hetzner. Cela provoque une charge importante sur notre serveur de forum ainsi que sur ma ligne Internet (environ 1'000 gigaoctets de données 
).
La version 5.5 fonctionne actuellement déjà sur le forum de test et nous n'avons pas encore pu découvrir d'erreurs. Les articles suivants présentent les modifications notables selon l'éditeur du logiciel WoltLab.

New and improved functions are traditionally in the proverbial spotlight and are immediately tangible for many users. However, we consider it no less important that page views and actions are always as fast as possible. This not only leads to a significantly better user experience but also has a positive effect on search engine rankings.
We rely on a combination of technical innovations, such as targeted "lazy loading" of graphics, where images in the non-visible part of the page are loaded in the background only after a delay, and the review of internal processes to improve performance. Through careful evaluations and intelligent optimizations, we were able to speed up the average page loading times by up to 7%.
We have further improved our high security standards and implemented targeted measures that both address rather unusual attack patterns, such as “BREACH” attacks, and proactively provide protection against future threats. For particularly sensitive websites, we have added an additional security level to the password strength check.
Improved detection of lost attachments
In the past, file attachments were sometimes no longer linked due to a reload of the page when creating a post. Uploaded, but not yet finally saved, file attachments are now better marked internally and automatically linked to the corresponding posts.
Change of the installation directory in rescue mode
The rescue mode automatically detects changes to installation directories and can update them directly in the database - no manual changes in the database are required anymore.
Rebuild all data in one run
The "Rebuild All" option performs all actions one after the other fully automatically.
Direct link to media file
A direct link to the file is now displayed in the list of media.
User quick search
The quick search option is now available in the "Search users" form.
Better linking of preview graphics of file attachments
Smaller graphics have been given a larger click area, making them easier to access.
More recipients of moderation comment notifications
Notifications about new comments on moderation entries are now delivered to all authorized moderators.
Simplified uninstallation of packages
Uninstalling a package is possible via the package‘s page, the detour via the package list is no longer necessary.

The length of comments can now be limited via a group permission.
Title attribute in media manager
The title of a medium is additionally provided using the title tooltip to make it easier to distinguish between long titles.

Notifications about responses to article comments
Authors of article comments and replies to comments are now notified about reactions.
Pages offer additional functions via subtle icons that are placed next to the breadcrumbs. This has several drawbacks: These icons are easy to miss for new users and because of the lack of labels they are often difficult to interpret. In the mobile view, these buttons were moved into the menu and are thus easier to understand, but conversely not immediately visible.
Apart from the icons next to the breadcrumbs, the number of action buttons (for example, “New Thread”) has also increased with each version. With the introduction of the “Official posts” function, for example, a button was added that redirects to the first official post. Having too many buttons makes it difficult to find the right one, especially for new users, and can quickly lead to frustration.
We have addressed these issues with WoltLab Suite 5.5 and have thoroughly redesigned both the breadcrumb menu and the action buttons, introducing a new location for both types of buttons. The action buttons have been reduced and there is now only a maximum of one large primary button on each page. The remaining buttons have been moved directly below these action buttons and visually reduced in size. Actions that are used more frequently are displayed as distinct buttons and other actions that are not used as frequently are displayed in a separate drop-down menu “Show more”. This makes these buttons way more easily accessible and noticeable both on desktop and on smartphones or tablets alike.
Extra Actions for Forums
In larger forums, there are often a few threads with a lot of activity that keep popping up in the recent activities or increase the number of unread threads. It is perfectly normal for users not to want to read all the threads. It is all the more annoying when a certain thread keeps getting pushed to the front even if you don't want to read it. In the past, it was already possible to hide entire forums. With the upcoming version, it is now also possible to specifically ignore individual threads and thus not only filter out the thread from the unread threads, but also hide all activities from these threads.
No notifications will be generated for mentions or quotes in an ignored thread. The existing “Users can ignore this forum” feature complements the feature to the extent that threads from forums that cannot be ignored cannot be ignored either. This ensures that important information, such as crucial announcement thread, does not go unseen.
We have also taken this feature as an opportunity to completely replace the thread subscription dialogue with a new drop-down menu. This makes selecting the thread status (“Subscribed” or “Ignored”) easier and more intuitive for the user.
Subscribe and Ignore Threads
Subscribing to forums has so far ensured that one is reliably informed about new threads in the forum. However, to receive notifications about new posts in the forum, it was necessary to subscribe to these threads separately. Especially when subscribing to existing forums, it was very tedious to subscribe to all threads already contained in order to receive corresponding notifications.
With the upcoming version, we offer a solution to this dilemma in the form of an additional option for forums: subscribing to forums and threads in one forum. This means that the subscriber will thus not only be notified about new threads, but also about new posts in the threads of the forum. At the same time, we have also adapted the UI here and placed the selection of the
status in a drop-down menu to make it easy for the user to make a selection.
Forums can be ignored and thus hidden via the “Forums on / off” function, but this feature had been very hidden on the forum home page in the breadcrumbs. Due to the revision of the UI of the forum subscription, there is now also the possibility to accommodate another button. It is therefore only logical that forums can now also be ignored via the drop-down menu. This also offers the advantage that the feature now behaves analogously to the new “Ignore threads” feature.
Subscribe and Ignore Boards
The selection of the “Best Answer” in threads has become an important and well received feature for users. This is intended to help third parties find the answer to their question, especially in more complex and longer threads, and thus orient themselves in the thread. The feature “Mark threads as done” provides visual clues and filter capability to easily recognize questions that have not been (fully) answered yet.
However, as soon as a best answer has been marked in a thread, the thread is usually resolved for the user. Therefore, it is only logical to mark the thread with the Best Answer as Done. This convenient automation avoids the hassle of doing it manually and keeps the list of unresolved threads clean.
Users often register in forums to ask questions. It is all the more frustrating when the new user cannot find a way to open a new thread and gives up after some searching and eventually leaves the site to look somewhere else. To make it easier for new users to open a thread, there is now a global “Create Thread” button on the forum list. As soon as this button is pressed, an overlay opens with the selection of the desired forum. As soon as the forum is selected here, the user is redirected to the “Create Thread” form for the corresponding forum and can thus ask their question quickly and easily.
With the previous version, WoltLab Suite 5.4, we focused primarily on technical revisions and set the stage for WoltLab Suite 5.5. The focus in this version is on functional revisions of the user interface as well as usability and accessibility improvements. With this article we would like to provide a first glance at the upcoming version WoltLab Suite 5.5.
The user menu has essentially proven itself over many years in terms of structure and functionality, however, some weaknesses became apparent over time, which we are addressing directly with WoltLab Suite 5.5. The redesigned and technically modernized menu aims to eliminate four major core weaknesses of the previous implementation:
Control panel (blur for illustration only)
For the redesign, the focus was on creating a clear structure with systematic formatting in order to make the content quicker and easier to grasp. The menu items for the settings have been redesigned and now link to the entire section, the sub-items now only have informative character. This revision also allows a comfortable and concise operation in combination with many installed extensions.
Notifications (blur for illustration only)
The menu items for notifications, conversations and moderation have been revised and use a uniform layout and control concept. The structure is strongly modeled after the previous layout to allow for a smooth transition from earlier versions. Notably, the icon buttons have been visually enlarged and offer larger click areas to make them comfortable to use on touch screens.
Desktop notifications are no longer automatically enabled; they can be enabled or disabled via the box that appears in the notifications. The box is only displayed as long as no decision has been made and then disappears automatically.
Color scheme in the style editor
The color scheme of the menus can be adjusted directly via the style editor, the color palette thereby allows the comfortable adjustment of all color values used and offers the familiar live preview of the appearance. Existing styles are fully compatible with these changes, but depending on the color scheme, it may be appropriate to color match the new menus.
From the very beginning of the implementation, we have consistently paid attention to enabling the best possible operation via keyboard as well as via assistive devices (for example, screen readers or VoiceOver). In addition to the consistent use of suitable ARIA attributes, this is also achieved through active focus management. For developers, we have created a safe API that can be used to provide their own content in the menu while maintaining accessibility.

The page header has been redesigned to provide a much better user experience and more functionality. The logo has been moved to the left side and has more room due to adjusted spacing, so that even wide logos can be incorporated in a meaningful way. On the right side you can find the main menu, the user menu and a button to access the site search.
Main menu (smartphone)
With the revision of the main menu, menu items open directly within the listing and thus form an easily comprehensible structure in which the path is recognizable at all times. These adjustments also benefit accessibility, where we were able to achieve significant improvements here. In addition, this allows us to implement a uniform operating concept together with the admin panel to make it easier for new users to get started.
Notifications are by far the most important aspect of the user menu and will be more important in the future. The previous menu with its countless links gives way to a tidy screen with easily accessible tabs for accessing the individual sub-items. When the user menu is accessed for the first time, the notifications open directly and are thus directly accessible without any additional effort.
Notifications (smartphone)
The revised user menus are reused in this view and integrate directly into the view, with overflowing content automatically becoming scrollable. At this point, the better optimization of these menus for touch operation in particular comes into play, offering familiar operation on both smartphone and desktop.
Martin and I are working on the major update to the WoltLab forum software version 5.5. This version will bring noticeable improvements in the operation of the web interface.
Of course, we first backed up the forum, data and databases to our local NAS in addition to the daily backups at Hetzner. This causes a huge load on our forum server as well as on my internet connection (approx. 1,000 gigabytes of data ).
Version 5.5 is currently already running on the test forum and we have not been able to detect any errors so far. The following posts list the noticeable changes according to the software manufacturer of WoltLab.

Eigentlich wollten wir heute Morgen ein Gartencenter aufsuchen und ständig kamen uns Oldtimer und HotRods auf der Autobahn in der Nähe von Bern entgegen. Irgendwo muss da doch ein Treffen sein?
Kurz Tante Google angeworfen und nach St. Stephan gesucht und siehe da, heute ist doch das grösste Rockin' & Bike Meeting in Europa. Natürlich die Karre gedreht und zurück nach Hause den 8er holen.
Die Anfahrt war ca. 1h und 60km, das Wetter stark bewölkt und Gewitterwarnung mit Hagel gegen Abend angesagt. Im Wallis wie auch in der Waadt haben die Behörden alle Anlässe verboten. Egal, wir wollen auch nicht bis zum Abend bleiben 
Am Besucher-Parkplatz angekommen dann der Schock.
60.- Euro für eine Nase, für uns beide also 120.- Euro Eintritt. Eine kurze Diskussion hat nichts gebracht, wie einige vor uns haben wir gewendet und sind wieder nach Hause gefahren.

Die letzten Vorbereitungen laufen auf Hochtouren und wir planen noch diverse Ersatzteile mit zu nehmen. Der Thomas hat ja schon unzählige Teile in seinem 8er verstaut und wir nehmen noch diverse Schlauchschellen, Schläuche und viele Kleinteile mit.
Bevor wir eine Sitzprobe für die Ersatzteile und die Koffer machen, pumpen wir noch das Reserverad auf. Dies geht oft vergessen und bei einer Reifenpanne geht dann das Gefluche los.

Ein grosser wie auch ein kleiner Koffer planen wir ein, damit wir in den Hotels jeweils nur den kleinen Koffer mit Kleider für ein paar Tage mitschleppen müssen. Zwei- bis dreimal findet dann ein Austausch der Kleider vom grossen in den kleinen Koffer statt.

Die Knopfzelle der beiden Funkschlüssel sollten auch noch erneuert werden.

Bevor unser 8er auf die lange Reise von Schweiz-Frankreich-Spanien-Portugal-Italien-Deutschland gehen kann, müssen wir noch einige Arbeiten an ihm ausführen. Der 8er war mehrmals in verschiedenen Werkstätten und wir haben den gesamten Antriebsstrang aufgrund nicht lokalisierbaren Vibrationen und Geräusche (Wummern wie bei einem Subwoofer) überarbeitet . Revidiert haben wir das Getriebe, das Differential, die Kardanwelle, beide Antriebswellen, Hardyscheibe, Wasserkühler, Thermostat und viele weitere Teile dazu.
Den Wasserkühler mussten wir dreimal wechseln, da die Dinger aus dem Aftermarket oft nicht das sind, was sie versprechen. Schlussendlich haben wir eine Woche vor der Reise erneut einen Originalen Wasserkühler von BMW beschafft und mit der Hilfe von Rolf und Fredi noch schnell in den 8er eingebaut. Da die Kühlleistung bei warmen Tagen und stehendem Fahrzeug über 120°C anstieg, haben wir auch eine neue Visco-Kupplung eingebaut. Die Ölwannendichtung war auch nicht mehr ganz so dicht. Da haben wir auch gleich nochmals die Ölpumpenschrauben auf Festigkeit geprüft.
Der bei BMW bestellte Scheibenwischer (kostete fast 100 Euro) passt ebenfalls nicht und muss mit einem Dremel so angepasst werden, dass das Wischerblatt auf der gesamten Länge auf der Scheibe anliegt.
