If you ever come on down to Australia I would show you a section of highway that becomes freeway with first 100klm the 110klm limits and where there both 'speed cameras"'and 'time over distance' camera that take a pic of your front and rear plate and which calculate the correct elapsed time for the distance at the average speed.

I bet you are already guessing, the fine and points deducted (from your allowed 10 over three years) is not calculated on klms over but seconds too fast!

We have a fitting description for the government wanker who designed the system and we feel it is also befitting of the vacuous wastes of space that passed the item through government not to mention the excreta that process the fines.

In Australia we call them arseholes, as opposed assholes (Aust english vs US english).

I read with joy that recently someone with a greater sense of humour than my own took to a fixed camera with a shotgun. That way you can still shoot, not injure and still have the fun of the hunt. Now that is what I call sport!

    cheers boys

    Finally Wayne!.

That's the one but you do need to use your own rear cover and 95% probability that the front CV coupling is a small one meaning you may need to use yours. If you are lucky and it's a late 7 series it may have a 840 compatible coupling.

If you need to change you need a competent diff rebiulder, not so much for the change but to set the bearing preload. There is a crush sleeve on the pinion between the front and rear bearings which when new provides the clearance required to start at "no pre load" and when the big nut is torqued up the sleeve will crush allowing pre load.

The secret is crushing slowly and knowing the feel because if you do it too tight then it's a complete tear down and restart with a new sleeve.

If the bearing preload is too loose or too tight the bearing will fail and you also risk the pinion gears, no if but or maybe

You will need a new front oil seal from the stealers as well as a crush sleeve.

Then it's welcome to the "Tyre Friers"club!

    cheers

Remember you are looking for something kinda rare so fleabay is just one place to search.

    Try Breakers looking for

    E32 4.0 or V12
    E34 4.0 or M5 6cyl

that's the only source and if from a 32 be sure it is not a baby V8 (3.5)

Your alternative is to get an open 3.9 (still from one of the above) and then a LSD of any ratio using the bears to make the LSD into a 3.9. You need to allow for a new crush sleeve, front seal and an experienced diff man to re assemble to correct bearing preload.

I have done a half dozen that way and the cost is much higher but at least I can supply myn customers that way

    Hope it helps

    Why all this talk?

There is only one 8 and most of us have one!

Would you want something this "fugly" compared to your E31?

I hope they never bring out a new 8 Series because like the 6 which people get confused.............ah hell no one willl ever confuse an 8

    cheers

Well here I am asking for help rather than sharing some of the information learned from you guys over the years.

I have a 91 V12 in the garage and have had the batteries disconnected, well I thought dropping the earth (didn't drop the positive cable) would be sufficient to clear the seat memory computers to get the electric door mirrors working again, however on reconnecting the four way flasher came on (and went off after depressing the the switch and and turning off).

The engine stated, running rough for thirty seconds or so and then died. It fails to restart, there are plenty of cranking amps, just no firing at all.

I have disconnected the positive from the RHS battery and will leave it for a while hoping it clears.

I suspect it was trying to earth through somewhere in the miles of cable or various electronic gizmo's and hope that it either clears or that someene else has been there before me!

    Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!

    cheers

    DavidThanks for that,

I wasn't aware of the E coding and haven't come across it yet.

Are you aware of anything that is deleted and definatly no longer avail even ex "the fatherland".

    Cheers

    Theo

which side do you need. I have one side, used, stripped of paint ready to prime and re color but can't remember which side so I go search for it.

Cost is $35 AUD plus postage, guess at $15.00

    Cheers

Don't be fooled by that fact that the 8 series has been out of production for a while.

I have restored several and have a constant stream of parts coming for customers and can tell you that I have never had a "no longer available" on any part.

The fact that your local dealer doesn't have it in stock means nothing. They will get it from BMW headquarters in your country and if the HQ doesn't have it then they will order from Germany and the cost will be same as if it were in stock.

Small parts like the washer bottle lid and carpet mats are not worth buying second hand because of issues like color and often things a half worh or worse anyhow.

    cheers

I do like the two tone leather. Looks sporty. I have one in the garage at present with the same colors.

Its a pity that the car industry has so many shonks purporting to have special leather restorer processes when all that happens is a good clean and fresh spray job.

Leather lounge restorers/ re color tradies are the giys to use, not to say there aren't some excellent car leather specialists as well.

Glad you enjoyed your stay in Oz. Come back sometime and drop by for some real beer and lets talk some 8

    cheers

It's always a pleasure o help a POM. I had some wonderful times in your country in the seventies and learned to like your beer, your wonderful women and your culture, not that we differ that much here in the colonies!

I had my leather re painted a while back and dis-assembled for the painter so he could get at all the areas that needed re coloring. Mine is black so it would not have mattered much either way.

The "re dyeing" phrase is bullshit because the process is nothing more than a clean with prep wash solvent and then a spray coat of the right color whether out of a can or a gun. The secret is to match the color which for a painter, is not really brain surgery, it is just a matter of experimeting till the coclor is right and hen painting like a car.

    Cheers

May I suggest that you visit 'realoem.com" which, if you haven't been there is a very useful site that is in fact the BMW parts catalogue loaded onto the web.

Check out the section on seating and spend a half hour or so. you will find most questions answered there but in short, the seat squab or bottom cushion is not heavy when removed from the metal.

Am I hearing that you might be wanting to send the cover away for a re spray?

If so then I would definately take the leather off the frame as the frame weighs plenty.

    cheers

The whole lower seat detaches from the top. You will find the mount points once you remove the seat from the car and remove the side plastic cover. Once detached you need not remove the cushion from the frame but if you did then 90% probable that the leather covers interchange left to right but it's not a simple job in fact it rally should be left to a motor trimmer with the correct tool to clamp the steel springs etc.

    cheers

Not sure of the question but the seat is bolted to the floor with 4x Torx two of which are easily visible the the front and two which are revealed when you slide the seat forward.

The runners are also bolted to the seat using 4xTorx. Both left and right runner assemblies interchange.

The drive motor and cables are not serviced separately but the cable can be replaced individually if you find a cable manufacturer who will cut and swage the ends.

    Hope that helps you

    cheers

    Thanks Jud

thanks Jud of r the clarity on numbers.

Not sure where I got the wrong number on the no CSi manuals but good to be correct now. Also good to know of the 4th CSI. Have you any idea where bit went in OZ or for that matter where the other two are.?

We know of Greville Edgerton's dark blue with grey leather is but no idea on the other two. Rumour has it that one was bought by a well known businessman who had a major share in a local BMW dealership and that the car may be in a collection while the last may be white and has been tastefully re decorated with cow ides etc, a rumour which is akin to our worst nightmare!

and finally, thanks and congrats on your fantastic input that will benefit 8 series owners worldwide for many decades to come

    cheers

There is is no glue involved. The trim has a metal core that form as "pinch" effect so you need the ensure you don't roll it up too small or bend it at an angle although it is reasonably forgiving

    cheers

I think that car was actually in New Zealand where men are men and sheep are nervous.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones that has plenty of spares as I have dismantled a couple of wrecks. I also keep an eye open for those easy to damage and hard to find parts and panels. Keep an eye on ebay.de (Germany) for odd bits. There were plenty on the road and they are now finding the wreckers yards (breakers huh?)

Currently there is a LHD front guard (fender, depending on your accent) going fairly well priced.

Just the same there is a risk but in the overall picture I believe that driving on the roads with drunks , druggies and the general idiot of today the racetrack would offer better odds.

    cheers

Paul, the only reason I have an auto 8 is that of the 298 that came to Oz, none were V8 manuals and only 8 were V12 manuals.

I am looking forward to the conversion although it will take a while to round up all the bits so it will be like a factory delivered car.

As for the track I agree with the 'idiot out there theory' so it would only be a BMW club day where you run against your own handicap with a couple of other cars of same or higher value. Even then I would wnat to have met the other guy to ensure he (or she) does have a sense of pride and really doesn't have the "ah well , it's only money" attitude.

Maybe it is only money and maybe easy come easy go but there are not enough replacements out there and I really don't feel like going through the resto process again.

    cheers
