Sure Reinhard would give us a bullet proof explanation, but yet I give it a try:
as far as I remember, the "Option Special Engine" means for M60 and early M62 V8 an Alusil cylinder block, where these were usually of Nikasil alloy.
Later on (probably during 1996 and on) all M62 were built using solely Alusil.

I still cannot decide whether sourcing a 2nd hand box best or ask a specialist to try repair mine, but probably the former.
...
I think, is really a matter of how much mileage you have got on your own gearbox...
If you think the 2nd hand gearbox will have a lower mileage, then go for it -

ps: There is also "ECU: GS 8.55, Engine: M62, Transmission: 5HP24, from 01.05.97 till31.08.97", but again this doesn't appear to cover my Dec 97 car..?
According to the official BMW ETK the GS8.55 is the last version, from 9/1996 till manufacturing stop in 1999.8er.org/forum/index.php?attachment/28101/
Even if this would not be the case and your EGS had a newer version (very theoretical...), I don't believe the OBD error codes would change their meaning...

Anyone know how much a NEW gearbox might ship for? (not that i can afford it most likely)
Also, anyone got a reply for the question of how to check oil level in gearbox?
You won't believe it... but BMW calls here in Germany 5194€ for a remanufatcured 5HP24 gearbox...
And no, sorry, there is no dipstick to visually check the oil level. -

Does anyone know which box my Feb '98 840Ci Sport has, is it the 4hp24 or 30?
Thanks
No way. Almost sure you got an A5S440Z.
About the "trans fail safe" problem I rather keep silent and wait for someone else, as I am a manual gearbox guy... -

Just found this old thread from you and this Tool is freaking amazing!
Thank you for sharing! -
Actually I can't believe nobody ever bought a Catalytic Converter from BM... ebay.uk is full of them!
-
I am looking for possible replacement of my catalytic conveters and I have found the Company BM Catalysts, which seems to be the only one "no OEM" provider for converters with manifold and pipes, good for a direct swap (no welding).
The items are:Anyone knows these parts? Any experience with the company?
Danke!

First of all I would follow the first one of Timm's great hints. Many M62 drivers report best improvements after the swapping of the rubber caps or even the whole PCV cover (crankcase ventilation valve).
For me this was not enough and in the end I had also to adjust the throttle idle position:http://www.8er.org/forum/showt…einstellen-M62-%28M60-%29
This link is in fact in german, but I hope it helps a little bit...

Well... I don't think so.
Surely stretched a bit wider than with the original 265, but after all they still are 26mm wider than the rim well of 9":255mm-(9inch*25,4mm)=26,4mm
I think it would look ok. This would be anyhow the look of a standard M5 rear wheel... it didn't looked stretched back then
In the end this is probably a matter of attitude: regarding the rear wheels I am a convinced assertor of "less is more" -

I was despairing and thought I might have to go to 275/40/17 to get alternatives such as Michelin PilotSport2. Worth noting if you have the M System-II wheels - getting rear tyres is going to get very, very difficult.
I am aware of the problem of finding the rear tires in the right size for the 17" rims...
I for one I was thinking about to use 255/40/17. After all the E34 M5 used this tire size combination on the very same M-System II rims (aside from the offset...). All E34 with the factory 17" BBS Y-spoke used this combination too. -

Time for something different
You can have something different... but why sell the E31 for it? Just keep both! -
Somehow sad...
-
Timm is dead right with his answer.
Anyway for your information, the offset of the stock rims looks like this:7,5x16" (FA & RA)--> 15mm
8x17" (FA & RA) --> 10mm
9x17" (only RA) --> 19mm
8x18" (only FA) --> 13mm
9,5x18" (only RA) --> 25mm
So I claim you did it right with ET20 + 10mm spacers...

... Any idea why it is overreading?
Probably is the sensor just fallen off its hub in the brake duct and now is measuring the temperature of the engine bay -
