Did a search here and did not see where anyone else posted these.

The December issue of BMW CAR, the really fine UK publication for BMW's, had a great 12 page article on the 20th anniversary of the e31. Some really fine cars and photos including an Alpina. They also had some fun facts & figures from our very own Jud Spencer (Yea Jud!!).

Wanted to change fluid and filter and hate the goofy fill plug / no dipstick BS. So I did a little design work & came up with this. So far am very happy with the results. I will do a detailed write-up later but if anyone is interested send me an e-mail. If enough interest I can do a detailed set of instructions with photos & mechanical drawing. Had a local machine shop do a special fitting that was pretty simple. I want to run it on my car for awhile though to make sure there are no issues. My main concern is the close location to the exhaust pipe.

I had planned to do the fluid & filter but my trans started acting up a bit. I post a copy of the details below but as of today I still have not figured out what the real problem is. I will probably just pull the trans & converter and ship them to Kirt Koeller. If anyone has had the same or similar problem please let me know what you did to fix.

    - Thanks, Scott

Here is the letter I sent to Kirt. He may even try to come to Mt. Dora for a little R-R from the cold northlands.

    To review the symptoms:

1995 BMW 850 Ci - 80,000 miles - There are no warning lights, I took the car to my local BMW dealer who drove it and did a full computer readout. No fault codes in memory. I have a copy of the print out. Changed fluid & filter - refilled with Esso LT 71141 - you did the valve body & tested the EGS control module. No change in problem after new fluid, filter, etc.

Dealer recommendation - New trans & converter (their guess).

Numbers off the tags on the trans

    - BMW Trans 83229407807

    - 007 6565 1055 000 017
    - 5HP30
    - BMW NR
    - 1421 818

    Symptom details:

Car / trans work great EXCEPT when I coast down. I get a jerking / lurching that feels just like I would have if I had a clutch & pushed in & released the clutch pedal quickly. The car lurches, the tach goes from say 1600 RPM to idle and back to 1600 (never above) with each lurch. This lurching starts at 45 MPH and lower speeds only, so if I was coasting down from 60 MPH all is fine until speed reaches 45 MPH. It also lurches less when cold and gets worse as the car / trans warms up. This happens when the gear selector is in (D)rive or if I manually shift to 5th and 4th. However if I shift to 3rd and coast down there is no jerking. According to the BMW & ZF documents I have the lock-up converter is enabled only in 4th, 5th & (D)rive.

I want to check all the electrical connections and signals before pulling the trans & converter to ship to you. But since this problem started gradually and now only gets worse when the car warms up I feel this is probably a mechanical problem and NOT electrical. Maybe the Lockup clutch circuit in the torque converter. I feel there are probably no electrical issues since electrical problems generally start abruptly and don't change much. But I do want to check just in case.

If you could check around and maybe send this to your ZF experts to see if any one can confirm what the problem is I would really be grateful. Hate to pull the trans & converter if I don't have to.

Does anyone else feel that the engine sound effects plus the Steering wheel, gas and brake pedals are the primary entertainment center in the 8?

Yes I have an aftermarket MP3/CD head unit and a subwoofer in the boot but I never seem to turn them on.

While I am also an audio buff my 1995 car came from the factory with a very good system. I still use the cassette sometimes with my homemade cassettes!! I have added a mp3 input also but I think it is cool to use all of the features that still work. I will upgrade the speakers someday but for now I am happy with the audio.

There are plenty of audio system posts here and at the the other BMW forums if you are looking for ideas.

    Tire update

    MB & the rest......

So far I am very happy with the Falken's going on 4 months with about 3500 miles. Very, very quiet, nice grip in the dry with a fairly good break away when pushed to the limit. I had only dry use up until a few days ago when we finally got some rain. Tires did very well in the wet, little hydroplaning with really deep water at speed. Seemed to have a bit of abrupt lateral break away in the wet. Nothing major, just not as smooth as other tires I’ve had.

The Bridgestone’s’ I had were going on 7 years old, were hard and very noisy. Had only about a third of the tread left but were bad in the wet except when they were new. I have other Bridgestone’s on the wife’s car and they are good wet & dry (G009’s).

    Tires for my 8

I’m going to try a set of Falken FK452’s on mine this week. I’m going to stay with staggered again 245/40 x 18 front 275/35 x 18 rear on factory upgraded wheels. Great price with a lot of good reviews. I was considering non- staggered in 245/45 x 40 all around on some new wheels but they never arrived. General Exclaim UHP’s are super cheap but have been getting great reviews. I have gone both ways over the years on tires spending a lot or a little. It all depends on what you what the tire to do besides hold the car up. Here in Florida I need to change my tires sooner because of the heat & rain. I have used Bridgestone, Fulda, Goodyear, Michelin & General in the past with good success. I will NOT ever use a Uniroyal, Firestone or BF Goodrich due to bad experiences.

Tires can be a real pain in the a$$ to research. I found the below links helpful. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

Hi Noggie: Awesome wheels!! Really like the look and how it sets off the profile of the 8. I also really like the 'deep reverse offset' which you refer to as the 'lips'. Do you have the exact dimensions so I can use that info for when I finally decide on my new wheels? Also, did you have to make any adjustments or use spacers or rings to make them fit? I seem to remember your post that these are 3 piece wheels that you had spec'd out just for your car. I did visit the Work web site but they just list the basics. Also, what tires & sizes again please.
    - Thanks, Scott

    Work Wheels

Hi Noggie: Those wheels are fantastic! Should look really good on your car. Can't wait to see the photos. Thanks for the tip on Work Wheels. I am also looking at some of their wheels as they have a lot of nice 5 spoke designs. I also found another wheel that I really like, see the link below for this really nice 5 spoke. I also agree that a nice black or black & chrome wheel will look good on my dark (Oxford) green car.

8 Series rear shock mount details

Hi Noggie: Scott Marion here! How are you, are you coming back to the US anytime soon? Saw this post of yours & thought you might find this information below helpful. I inspected my rear shocks a few months ago and all is well for now. I still have stock rear shocks & springs so I hope I do not have to deal with this anytime soon. There are some really good photos & ideas shown in this post & hope it helps you with your repairs. I know Tom (Wuffer above) was offering a suggestion from the various experiences he has posted. Go Tom!!

What did you decide to do about your wheels? Have you purchased any yet? If so post a photo or when you do change your wheels. Also let me know if you will be coming to Florida at all like we discussed in February.

    Update to your schedule??

Hi Noggie: I take it that you are here in the U.S. now, yes? Hope you had a good trip over here. I've made the trip from Norway & Sweden a few times myself.

How is your search for the parts you need for your 850? If you need any help or have any questions, send me an e-mail or give me a call 4076796460. Our little event in Mt. Dora, Florida for the end of February is really coming together with a lot of people. Hope you can make it. If not, there are some other events coming up through the local BMW clubs. Check out the link below.

Welcome to US. Come visit us in Florida & parts

Hi Noggie: Check out the RF & 8-fest sites for info on our upcoming 8 series show here in Florida in February. Come on down or contact some of the people coming from Texas (TX Greg or RedCorvette63) driving through Alabama to Florida. There is a gentleman coming from Lousiana also. I'm sure you could ride with them if your schedule allows.

Regarding parts, I agree with Peterban as I use Gault for alot of parts. I also suggest Autohaus AZ as they carry alot of parts in stock and you can sometimes get a better deal on items like you described.

    https://www.autohausaz.com/

You could use the hotel address to have the parts shipped to as I have done this myself. Just call the hotel to make sure they will handle it properly. You may have to set a temporary address with your credit card to have items shipped to an alt address. If the hotel won't help send me an e-mail & I'll send you my phone number as any one of us from the 8-seris club & BMW CCA will be happy to help you out.

I live in the Orlando area and would be happy to show you around if you want to stop on by to visit.

    Front Spoiler

    Hi Terry:

Thanks for the close-up shots of your front spoiler. The more I look at yours, the more I like it.

Does the lower air duct of the WW spoiler mate directly to the original black lower lip spoiler on your car? Or did you have to remove or modify the lip spoiler? Does the WW spoiler provide direct airflow into the original lower air duct of your car? I live in Florida and one of the major concerns I have is cooling during the summer months here in the 'Sunshine State'.

Also, fiberglass or urethane? Is your car lowered or stock height? Looks like you have about 6-7 inches of front clearance between spoiler and pavement. Is that a good estimate?

    - Thanks again, Scott

    Front Spoiler

Hi All: I too am looking to possibly add a front spoiler to my 850. I have ordered & received the rear 'factory style' small wing spoiler from http://www.electrodyne.cc/ (AKA) http://www.racdyn-usa.com/. I am very impressed so far with the quality of this rear spoiler for the very reasonable price. I will be painting and mounting this in the next few weeks. However, I'm still undecided on a front spoiler. I think the factory CSi front is nice, but am looking for something a little more reminiscent of my 1988 635CSi type front spoiler.

Terry, can you share more about the Wings West front spoiler you have on your silver 8er? That front spoiler really looks great with your silver paint. I wonder how it would look on my Oxford Green 850? I would like to know more of how it mounts and if the upper and lower air intakes mate directly to the stock front air intakes / lower lip spoiler? Any close-up photos or actual installation photos would be great. I spoke with Wings West and they say the front spoiler is urethane. Is yours fiberglass or urethane?

bizzy840, here are a couple of other web sites besides electrodyne I found of vendors who still carry front &/or rear spoilers for our beloved 8 series.

    Enjoy, Scott
