At last...a million thanks to Tall Tony!
I have been reading your creaking problems with interest and I think you may have saved me a few needless trips to garages to try and sort it out. It is very noticeable when driving at slow speeds over any road surface and increases when the sterring wheel is turned either way. I guess thats because its putting more strain on the shocks.
At last I can go to the local garage armed with your fact sheet and pretend I know what the problem is! Only solution so far has been to turn the radio up !!

Exhaust trims
I too fancied chrome trims so just used wet and dry paper then Solvoautosol whatever it scalled and they look like mirrors! Cost about 30p! Did get a few blisters though!
Hi all
I have a 1998 840 which I have just had serviced. The steering wheel shuddered pretty well uncontrollably after going over small bumps. Not all the time but enough to make it a pain. I took it to the specialist who advised that it would need a new 'drag link' whatever that might be. Picke dit up and noticed the steering was considerably heavier. Queried it with him and he told me it was fine but alas its a lot heavier than it was. Does any one have any idea what it might be? Its only done this since the service and I want to keep on good terms with him as he is incredibly knowledgeable re the E31.
many thanks for any advice
Cheers

Just do it!
Hi
If I were you I would go for a pre 97 840 . Make sure its had all of the Nikasil issues resolved with the engine as there was a problem with detergents causing problems. The history file will alert you to the fact if the engine hasnt been seen to. If its pre 97 you could always try and get limited mileage insurance, say 5000 pa max which will reduce premiums as it then can be classed as a 'classic'. If your ein the wilds of Scotland I expect your postcode will be sympathetic also!
Do a load of research though as they are all getting a bit long in the tooth and could cause much heartache. I dont expect youll get much insurance on a 850csi but good luck!

Utter madness!

I did the same a few years ago. Did 80000 mile sin 18 months in a T plate E31. Thoght I was bored with it and made the mistake of buying an XJR [ZZZZZZZ ...rebodied Granada with a big lump] then a couple of other dogs and then an SL600. For the last 6 months Ive travelled far and wide to try and find a decent E31 as I couldnt really get them out of my mind. Bit like your first love I suppose!
At last Ive found one and picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Its as if Ive never been away. Not fast but who cares when there is not a bad line on the whole car. As far as the attention goes, well, thats up to you but Ive been asked already if its a new BMW ....
Go and get it valeted and see if you change your mind!
alpinas
Thanks Steve
No they're 20 spoke not 20 inch! 18 inch wheels

Hi
Could someone please tell me whether ALL Alpina wheels have the hidden
air valve behind the centre plate? I have deep dish 20 spoke 'Alpina' wheels by the way.
Appreciate your help
Cheers

Thanks Peter...
Not sure if I can justify spending 25% of the cars value on wheels!
