Right. I've come up with a cunning plan.
Trying to swap the 8 for a similar grand tourer isn't going to work for me.
Just can't find one that has zero depreciation, is as good, as reliable and that I like and can afford.
So - I will probably buy a Z3 M Coupe (opposite end of the driving spectrum).
Yes I have driven one and it did bring a grin to my face!
However - not sure if it will be a quick thrill which wears off after a month, so will keep the 8 as well for a while (thankfully classic car insurance, SORN and a kind neighbour with garage space all make this possible).
Next Spring, when the sap rises in BMW buyers, one will be sold - unless someone makes an offer I can't refuse sooner.
Luckily Z3 M Coupe prices are flat or rising, so if that's the car I sell it shouldn't hurt my bank balance too badly.

If you bring your laptop up again Timm to have another go at resetting my AHK I may well come up.

I don't know what software Timm's using, but I'll bring my laptop just in case.
I'm running the oem BMW software system with oem 20 pin connector.
Only issue will be very short battery life and I don't have an inverter.
Suggest you try Timm's Technical Tinkering first and then if that doesn't sort it you're welcome to try Brendan's Backstreet Bodging :)

    Touche Steve, :aetsch:
I think that is the crux of it, have some fun but never be unable to return to stock assuming originality will one day, be important. :top:

That's you'n'me scuppered then Steve :harhar:

I think you've answered your own question.
    :top:
Take it for a spin and I think you will come to the same conclusion you came to a few years back.
    :driver:

    Aarrgghhhh :banghead:
Damn! Why does the E31 have to be such a good all-rounder.
I have been here before, but can now spend twice as much on a replacement - but still can't find anything that takes my fancy and meets my criteria (see earlier post) :dontknow:

    No - I don't want a Csi.
How about a V12 conversion with a modern tippytronic box....:hmmmm:

I have a friend that had a DB9 and had horrendous bother with it, silly problems like fuel filler cap would not open and central locking that never worked, not to mention the mechanical issues. The aftercare at aston was terrible. I just could not get my head round buying a car like that and it had a Ford key.

    Stuart

So - Aston has been rejected.
That leaves an NSX, 456 or there's quite a nice 840 in the local garage (that is the garage attached to our house ).

Would upgrading a car with stock BMW parts be 'pimpimg'`
I.e me adding a CSi kit.
Car is still "original", but not as delivered from factory.

No Noggie - yours is upgraded.

Mine with is numerous DIY alterations would be described as pimped :grin2:
Those who have tried to buy it from me didn't seem to mind - tho' now I'm actually considering selling, the car park "I've been looking for a good one of these - would you consider......." approaches have suddenly stopped :hmmmm:

Well - my head's won one battle. The Aston is ruled out.
That leaves an NSX - or maybe a Ferrari 456....

My problem is I want a car that is:
Good engineering value - I could never pay £20K for a Stag - no matter how pristine.
Does not depreciate in value - for financial reasons and to win over my wife.
Costs £25K or less - because that's all I have to spend.
Will be accepted on a classic car policy - for financial reasons.
Is relatively rare - hence some of my choices.
Doesn't necessarily break down or need an expensive major specialist service every 1000 miles - not sure where that leaves the 456.
2001 or earlier - insurance, road tax and winning over my wife.
Can do mpg as opposed to gpm - don't do that many miles, but every little helps.
Isn't a rag top - I've never liked them (bad experience in a Spitfire - not the plane, but it did fly on that one occasion!).

So, where does that leave me?.....

Bugger. Is there any car that can compete with the E31 in terms of looks, engineering and value?

To be honest - my head will probably overrule my heart when it comes to the Aston for the reasons stated - but the NSX does interest me - if I can find one!

This could be a one time opportunity for me to buy a £20K car and much as I love my 8, I do fancy a change. I suppose I could advertise it for silly money and half hope nobody buys it ;)

Typical of me really. Keep a car for seven years. Spend time and money getting it just right and then get the "Seven year itch".
I'm not saying I'm definitely selling - because I've been here before and that's why this is in the Main Discussion rather than the Classified section.
It all depends on what I find to buy instead, but my biggest problem is asking price - they're all over the place at the moment.
Any thoughts where to pitch a 113,000 mile 97/P "unusual" 840 like mine?

In case anyone is interested, the two front runners as a replacement are a Honda NSX and a DB7 V12 Vantage (both about £20K).

In my opinion that is not really possible but shorting them would eliminate the error messages. As there would be no check for the shorted lamp, there would also be no message when the LED/HID actually fails.

    Cheers,
    Steve

I could live with that as an option.
I guess for the indicators/hazards special "flasher relays" may be available?

Although mine are humble replicas, they are as per the handbook for the Csi and fit perfectly on my 97 840 with no issues, rubbing, spacers, etc with the correct size tyres.

    These are:
    Front - 8J 13 offset with 245/40
    Rear - 9.5J 25 offset with 285/35

I have to say that red is one of the colours that definitely works on these cars.
Apart from those of us with a questionable sense of humour, you will find some real experts to advise you on how to get your new acquisition into A1 shape.
    Welcome indeed.

    Thanks Arnie.
I started a thread some time ago asking about an LKM mod as you suggest.
The consensus from some of our resident experts was that this would be a very difficult job.
I'd happily bypass the LKM completely if that were possible.

And if our cars are CanBus (because I've really no idea and different websites contradict eachother ) the same question applies - do these "error free" LEDs work?

Does anyone know if the LEDs sold as CanBus error free will also be error free on our IBus systems?

I've got LED front side lights with ballast resistors, but even though they are on heat sinks they get very hot and I'd like to find a more elegant solution - mainly because I'd like to replace other bulbs as well.

Disabling/bypassing the lamp failure module would be favourite, but is apparently not really an option.

    Thanks.
