Last week when pulling away after a halt the OBD flashed up "Check Backrest Lock" followed by "Check Owners Manual". This was accompianied with the failure of the fuel gauge and the radio!

I later discovered that the wipers would only operate for about 8 sweeps, stop in the middle of the screen and refuse to restart until the ignition was switched off and on again. Also the Passenger mirror now does not dip when selecting reverse. And, the central locking comes on sneakily when driving.

After much poking about under seats I found that the main loom under the drivers seat had been abraded by the frame of the seat underside obviously when motoring the seat back and forwards.

A Blue wire with a white stripe was broken. I have remade a connection and it checks out for current but still the warnings, problems persist.

Help!! I've checked through all the previous posts on this subject and cannot find anything similar.

This is really funny. In my neck of the woods there are'nt that many 8s, and there's a funny thing happens when I see one coming towards me:

    Wow!! That looks neat. 8)

Followed by a split second later: AHhhh, yes, I got one too!! :D

Obviously followed by much flashing of lights and hand waving.

Anyone ever come across another 8 where a "matey" flash and wave was never reciprocated? Every time I meet one the wave has always been returned. Gives you quite a warm feeling

Don't know if this is of any help, but, I've always been aware of a a certain harshness and vibration through the steering and the seat for the first couple of of miles on any journey from cold.

The "Throwing Stars" are a very snug fit on the hubs, but there's a vibration which feels like a wheel imbalance until I do a couple of miles.

After that it's OK, but it pisses me off that if I have to sell the car, and it's driven from cold then prospective purchaser isn't going to be too impressed.

Before you comment, I bought mine from "Derrin", NO test drives, This car is perfect!!

My belief is that there is an inherent HNV problem on the 8s when cold.

Rubber suspension bush specification? Dunno. But it obviously exacerbates itself with any wear.

    PS Not knocking Derrin.

PPS Talk to me about NVH!!

When I was in the process of purchasing the 840 over t'interweb, it occurred to me that it might be rather nice to have some kind of "840" reg. on it.

Whilst scrolling through the various number plate sites I came across
"A 840 BMW. " So, what does one do? The plate was on a Nissan . Now, I don't really have much time for "personalised" plates , ie, peoples names, but, this was just such an obvious purchase to suit the car. NOT to suit me.

I paid top dollar for a car from one of the most respected purveyors of these cars, and feel perfectly justified in the expense of marrying the plate to the car.

I have had many people approach me with smiles on their faces saying that they loved the plate/ car combo. I guess, if I ever sell the car the plate will go with it. (unless BMW come out with a new 840  )

PS Just to annoy those plate haters out there I've just fitted "German" stylee plates to her. Keeping the old ones in the boot of course.

MK, Thanks, simple indeed! But from a most unexpected source.

The windscreen surround (black plastic thingie) had become unstuck over the top of the screen! Just noticed this a.m. that a short section was slightly twisted up. Turned out that over 2 ' of the surround was loose.

Bead of superglue, and Hey Presto! Wallet threatening problem cured.

Funny thing is, 3 people and myself were all positive that it was emanating from under the scuttle! :?

Giving the 840 a bit of exercise today.

In 4th gear in the manual sector of the gearbox changed down to 3rd to overtake a truck. Passed him at about 75mph and about to click back into 4th. when the most hellacious rattling sound suddenly emanated from the engine compartment.

Slowed down gradually with the rattle diminishing until Ireached a layby.

Stopped, opened the bonnet, revved the engine, no untoward noises.
Everything seemed to be in order.

Cautiously carried on, and depending on engine load / road speed this bloody rattling (sounds like a stick tied to a bike's front forks) would start up again over approx 45 mph. On a level road I can get up to about 60mph before it cuts in and gets louder in volume but not more intense in terms of frequency.

Definitely not an engine derived problem, not rev related, more simply roadspeed associated. Appears to be coming from the scuttle area around the driver side, but even then seems to shift slightly from centrally to RH side.

Car due in for a service next week, but would hate to give my specialist an open cheque as far as chasing this kind of road based problem.

So, anyone out there experienced anything similar? Thanks.

I had the same problem, but noticed if I braked harder then no shudder.

Replaced the discs. That sorted it.

    For about 5,000miles

Ah well, it's an excuse to indulge in a spot of late braking now. :D

Not sure if the CSI spoiler is much different from the CI Sport spoiler as fitted to most 840's. But, if it has been damaged then be careful.

I managed to break the second spoiler I had.(Another bloody car ferry) I repaired it so it looked as new. Then I went to Poland. 135mph on the Autobahn, then I remembered I'd patched the bloody thing. They weigh about 15kg.!

I suddenly had thoughts of this thing disintegrating under the car at 135!

Sure enough , at the next stop, a crack was plainly showing where it had been repaired, I shudder to think of the consequences of 15kg. of sharp dense plastic stuff hitting the underside of the car at those speeds. Not to mention the hazard to anyone else.

So. Remember, these things actually do fulfill a purpose in keeping the front end stable at speed, and any weakness at such speeds could be lethal.

Buy a tube of Holts Firegum as they may just be slightly loose when you slip them on. :)

They were tight to start off, but by the time I'd got them tapped on the required length they were quite loose.

BEWARE, just looked at mine today, fitted them 3 weeks ago and they are badly discoloured / stained. Tried a mild polish but can't remove the staining.

    BMW quality?

Cheers Steve. It's a" Locust" 7 replica with an old Lotus Twin Cam (big valve) mated to the Corsair 2000E bullet gearbox and a Mk.2 Escort rear end set up as a 5 link system with coil over shocks. Bad point is front suspension is Mk.3 Cortina!! :(

It's done less than 6,000 miles since it was built in 1989, engine rebuilt 5,000 miles ago.

The tyres are 18 years old which may go some way to explaining it's somewhat "interesting, Oh My God handling".:shock:

Still, for less than £3,000. the fun factor is laugh out loud hilarity and the total opposite of the 8.

    Re: We are special...

    Zitat von sprucegoose

I've just picked up this thread. I've owned my 840Ci sport for the grand total of 5 months, having realised that I secretly covetted one for 12 years. After it was mine, naturally I wanted to make it perfect again, and although all my friends thought it was special at first they couldn't understand the love I felt. After I'd spent 2K putting some things right I realised that I was on a journey of my own, because no-one else would ever see the minute details that I was obsessing about. My wife is very supportive but I have realised that the rest of my world - take that as the rest of THE world - couldn't give a damn about CC66548 built in May 1997. Or indeed, any E31, for that matter. So what? I have found this community and I know that my car IS special, because it is one of a very, very small production run that cost BMW, arguably the best automobile engineering company of the late 20th century, the best part of $2 billion to produce. I am SO proud to own one of the 30,000 units that were created. At the week-end, I met some great people who share my beliefs. If it never features again in the popular car mags, never again makes an appearance on Top Gear, I don't really care. All I need to sustain me is the certain knowledge that it will become a renaissance car, all we have to do is wait, and this dream will remain alive because of people like us. Who can honestly say that those photos by Tony in the Lake District don't tug a nerve? So there's only a few of us looking at the photos today - it makes not a jot of difference to the quality of the product we all share enjoyment in. Just sharing my private thoughts with you all.

    :D

    :lol::lol::lol: Perfectly summed up.
