My apologies if this question has already been raised but the new website format is very different.

Can anyone confirm if the new e10 unleaded fuel is acceptable for use in the e31 or should one try and stay with the e5 while its available. Are there any known issues for using the e10?

For my 840 I would pay 217€ for that hose No.1 :itsme:

Are you being serious? How can that be? My dealer said that they would have to get the hose from Germany. The 840 must be on a slightly different and more sophisticated system.

    Hi Danilo,

Many thanks for the sound advice, I just assumed the hose was beginning to perish but have now tightened the clamp a bit, so will see how that goes first and then maybe replace the jubilee clamp with a butterfly type clamp.

Yes, the hydraulic hoses are expensive. The No 1 hose is £56 and the No 18 hose is £32.

Would anyone happen to know if hose 1 (Intake Manifold) in the picture below is continuous from the Pentosin Canister to the pump or is there an intermediate connection. It looks like it is continuous but without getting underneath I cannot quite see where it goes to.

I have a very slight weep from this pipes connection to the Canister and the hose is very rigid so probably long overdue for replacement.

Other than the hoses connecting to the Pentosin Canister are there any other places where the fluid could be weeping from?

Thanks chaps, any guidance or advice much appreciated.

I am surprised that you were only "a bit" horrified...but this is probably the british way of expressing it ;-).
It is definitely not to my taste, but in line with the other paintings we can see on the artist's website. My impression is that he is not really a car enthusiast

Excellent! I am loving this kind of response particularly from someone with the same '91 Brilliantrot 850i:top:

Different than one would have expected but somehow also special :)

    Yup, that's kind of how I felt:laugh:

Come on guys, 70 views and only 2 opinions, why is everyone so silent (Reinhard excluded:harhar:)

On the 7th April the BMWCC of GB hosted an evening to celebrate BMW's association with Art and mention was made of their Art cars. The four Artists are allegedly the four top car artists in the world and they are Tim Layzell; Benedict Radcliffe; Jason Fong and Ian Cook.

Prior to the event they asked members to submit photographs of their cars so the Artists could select one or two for the demonstration. I missed the original event but the CC office contacted me to say that my car had been chosen and I have since received a link to a recording of the event. The link I currently have requires members login but if I get another I shall post it.

With regard to the painting I had no prior expectations but presumed that whatever was produced would be pleasing! The Artist Ian Cook https://www.popbangcolour.com chose my car. I hadn't appreciated that his work was more akin to Caricature so when I first saw the completed job I was a bit horrified but am now warming to it as different views are being expressed. I haven't received the original artwork yet but attached is a screen shot from the video.

Please let me know what you think whether good, bad or ugly:hmmmm:

When I went to purchase some intensive washer fluid today I was advised that this is a discontinued product but I managed to buy a litre on ebay.

I asked the dealer to explain what BMW's recommendation is for overcoming this situation with vehicles that previously used intensive cleaner and was told to just use undiluted ordinary screen wash.

I suppose there was no other answer but it does kind of make a joke of all the years we have paid through the nose for intensive cleaner when the advise was "only use BMW intensive cleaner"

It was recently brought to my attention that none of the aftermarket belts are a perfect fit for any of the vehicles they suit because they are all made with tolerances that permit usage across a range of vehicles. We are only talking millimetres but they are not vehicle specific.

I contacted a company called Gates who are apparently the largest manufacturer of belts in the world and are of high quality. I provided them with our OEM numbers and this was their reply.

    8er.org/forum/index.php?attachment/46281/

I guess this explains why the genuine BMW belts are so much more expensive because they are a perfect fit as opposed to be being a generic belt.

I thought this was very useful information.

    Thanks Terry, response much appreciated.

Funnily enough I was warming towards the Continental until someone told me yesterday that they have had experience of them squeeking; strange old world this!

On the basis that each owner would only likely change these belts once I have decided to stay with the OEM ones from the dealer.

    Take care

Are there any recommendations for the best quality aftermarket ribbed belts?

There seem to be quite a few good branded makes in the price range of £10-£20. Typically, the dealer wants £40

Hope someone can chip in with some advice.

    We live in hope Bernhard,

There has been no problem steadying the ship with a few beers and even the odd whiskey during this lockdown:laugh:

I just can't believe that with all the time I have had on my hands of late I only discovered today that I need a new V belt:banghead:

    Thank you Bernhard,

Yes that was the best one that I came up with as well and probably nearest to the e31. It looked straightforward enough but was a bit dark and shaky wasn't it!

Its easy enough to take it to the garage but I enjoy and prefer doing these little jobs myself when I am aware of all the likely pitfalls.

Perhaps its not a job anyone on this forum has ever done before:dontknow:

    Take care

    Hello dear friends

Can anyone provide me with a 'link to' or a 'how to', replace the idler arm.

I have spent ages searching for information and got bored so thought I would just ask all you lovely helpful people:grin2:

Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance.

    Hi Bern,

A most satisfactory response and I have to say it did feel like you were merely thinking out loud.

It came across that you had done a good deal of homework and that is absolutely the right thing to do. I was just hoping to get the topic going as we are all affected by your findings.

Remember, there is no such thing as a stupid question!

    Stay well.

    Hello 8ers

Reasoning: As we all know, we're looking at 14-15k GBP upwards to buy in, with a likely 5-10k restore bill soon after. With the best will that is a strong investment and I'm not quite in that league.

Quite a few I checked closely in the 20-25k range all had imminent likely issues. Notably, one at 19.99k I spoke at length with the vendor.. seemed to be a part time 8er dealer as he talked of selling quite a few E31s before. He seemed interested to hear my (honest) thoughts about his car, so I compared it unfavourably with one which was up at (I think) 12k which at least had some detailed repairs work listed with dates etc. His has very little meaningful work done in 15 years but was marketed at a high price because (as is the way with E31) cosmetically in the photos it looked great.

    Good morning Bern,

It is difficult to work out when you sleep unless you are currently in Australia:hmmmm:

Interesting paragraph above. Could you please expand on what you consider to be "imminent likely issues" and what "meaningful work done" would be?

Is it your belief that unless a car has had some fairly major work done then it is inevitably not worth the money because all the problems are yet to come? This does seem a bit pessimistic because a well maintained car shouldn't necessarily be full of Gremlins waiting to jump out.

I think over the years, there has been a tendency for many, dare I say younger enthusiasts to have gotten into the 8 scene and thought they were just buying a lot of car for cheap money only to find that they couldn't really afford to run and maintain them. As a consequence every subsequent genuine enthusiast has had to spend fortunes in time and money effectively restoring the cars and this has led to the widespread belief that these cars are desirable but 'a bucket load of grief'.

I will never forget Chris Burton (the 8 specialist) telling me that if a car is worth £25K you could not turn a £5K car into a £25K car even if you spent £25K on it. Obviously it is the case that everyone has a budget to work to but I think every article I have ever read about classic cars always states that you should buy the very best one you can afford as it is false economy to buy cheap and do up unless your name is Ed China or restomod is your thing.

Hi Graham in case you're around...
Assuming your stunning car was sold in 2019...adding a quick note here just in case fate delayed the sale till 2021.
    best wishes

    Hello Matey,

Yup, still around and pop in from time to time. It's always a bit livelier when you are about and I enjoyed the catch up with Sandwich who has taken a big step in relocating to Scotland.

Over the years I have from time to time had dark thoughts about selling and was genuinely contemplating it in my first post. I have now owned her for 23 years and will not offer her anymore but if someone should ever express interest I would consider it. My only other dream car is a C2 Corvette and my budget just doesn't quite get there!!

Notwithstanding the dark thoughts, one thing that always played on my mind was Sandwiches relentless piss taking about my 16" original wheels; he just couldn't avoid having a dig:). Well I hope he reads this because he will be pleased to know that I am now running a nice set of staggered 18" Bayern Multi's that seem to be getting a bit of attention. Sandwich, if you are reading this I would like to thank you:adore: and will send photo if requested but these are pretty tasty.
