"M" Mean on the automatic gear box ?

I just bought a 850i last week. As it is 1991, the guy I bought it from did not have any owner manual.

My gear box is automatic, there are 3 options for it:
1/ E for Economic I guess
2/ S for Sports
3/ M, what does it stand for ? how should I use this one ?

If you put the car in 'M' mode you are in manual mode - like a manual gearbox you can choose which gear you are in. If you choose 1, the car stays in 1st gear through to choosing D, when the car stays in 4th gear.
