Yearly Cost

  • I imagine that I am a lot younger than most of the E31 owners on this website being only 19 years old  . Ive been working since the age of 14 during summers and weekends saving for an 850 Csi. Now that Im almost there, and with a little help from my Dad I might buy one next year. My main plan was to use it as a weekend car when the sun is nice and bright, not as a daily car. However, I was reading another forum where BMW said that the 850 costs about 6000 to 8000 euros to maintain during a year. This seems extremely expensive! Is this true and would I have to spend this much to maintain a weekend car? ( garage and petrol not included in the price)
Thanks for the help guys...if this is true I might have to wait until im older

  • Hi Jocke
My 10-yr-old 850Ci, which I've owned for 2 years, has easily required £5k of fettling & looking after each year so far. These are old cars & things break. And I don't do heavy miles either. Don't forget that whilst they were very expensive new, the parts & labour prices have not depreciated like the cars have. Even if you can steer clear of BMW dealerships & find a specialist independent mechanic who will look after it for you, it's gonna cost for parts. and if you want to max out on re-sale, you'll need it serviced by BMW which really hurts the wallet. You might want to think about hanging on until you can meet the maintainance budget, be an awful shame to buy such a fab car and turn it into a garage queen 'cos you can't afford to fix it. Unless you want to learn how to do it all yourself & you are planning never to ever part with it.............good luck!

  • POK,
Thanks for the reply. Due to the limited numbers of the cars I was actually planning to keep her forever
I have a garage place sorted and I would be driving the car rarely due to the fact that I am studying abroad. However, 5k a year is a lot of money, especially for a student.
Its surprising how much these cars really cost. I drive an old volvo 480'94 and its never broken down, just the usual service.
I think I might wait 2-3 years and then perhaps invest in a renovation project spread over several years.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Hi, i'm also a student, just 18 years old. I bought an 850i full equiped. I don't have a lot of experience of costs, but i have spent just something like 1000 euros (i live in Madrid) for maintenance. If you buy the car with changed wheels, oil and filters, i don't think you'll have a lot of problem with it. Afortunatly i've got some contacts in BMW Spain which reduces the parts prices, however it's a very exensive car to drive, but very pleasant. Look after a car which seems having no problem and make a full check at BMW before buying it. You might be lucky but the car can also take all your money
