Prop Shaft -URGENT

  • Anyone know if the prop shaft from an 840 is a suitable replacement for the one on my 850?? I have '91 850i and the bearings in the universal joint have gone! I am told they can't be ordered as a seperate item, but would need entire prop shaft assembly - is this correct??

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Simon,
I had to replace the entire propshaft on my M73 850 about one year ago. you cannot buy individual components for the shaft from BMW and have to buy a complete shaft. I am pretty sure that you cannot fit an 840 shaft to an 850 - they are different lengths, also the M73 propshaft is unique to that vehicle. What you can do though is to send your existing shaft to a repair specialist - try contacting Gerry at Phoenixmotorsports (user 8tech here) - he has experience of getting shafts repaired with excellent results - better than BMW since repairers will fit replace-able parts rather replace the entire shaft.

    Good luck

PS, I don't know whether your car is manual or auto, I saw from your profile that it's a 1991 car, here's the part number for a 1991 auto: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/sho…&btnr=26_0019&hg=26&fg=05

and here's the number for a manual shift car: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/sho…&btnr=26_0019&hg=26&fg=05

and finally here's the number for a 1992 840 Auto (Manual 840's are as rare as rocking horse poo so I am assuming the shaft you're interested in is not from a manual car - if it was then it's worth $$$$): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/sho…&btnr=26_0019&hg=26&fg=05

You can see that all three have different part numbers and I believe they are different lengths.

You're welcome, as I said I had to replace mine - I got BMW here in Zürich to do and it wasn't cheap, I was in touch with Gerry at the time and on his advice I kept my old propshaft to get it properly reconned so that I have a replacement for the next time I need one.

    Cheers,
    Jason
PS, just noticed that you already mentioned your car was a '91 - maybe I should read posts a little more carefully :)
