Failed MOT!

  • I was kind of expecting it to be honest!
Needs a new screen, a pair of front thrust arm bushes a couple of front tyres and the horn wires got ripped out on a low kerb last week so no horn.
Also has a pentosin leak somewhere by the reservoir, slight play in the steering (idler bush) and the nearside headlight aim is low.

Got a set of 4 front arms complete on their way and a couple of tyres in the garage ready to go on. Screen will be an insurance job and I'll sort the horn wires.

Any common leaks for the steering?
Funny that the headlight adjuster works fine. Any ideas?

  • Pentosin leak is fairly common on older models.... What generally happens is that the rubber is affected over time by the oil and becomes tired and relaxed and the non adjustable clamp does not do the job any more...

Solution... Remove old clamp cut the deformed piece of pipe off and stick a nice shiney stainless jubilee clip on....

Pain in the ass job as you need to syphon out the fluid and get the old clamp off.... but very satisfying knowing there will be no more unsightly leaks....
Good chance to change the pentosin filters as well though.....

    Hope this helps

  • That is not your adjuster, if your spinning the knob at the front under the light. That is to manually lower/raise the light due to power failure.

The real way to adjust your light, is the 4 mounting tabs on the bucket unit. Loosen the hexnut, adjust the allen headed stud, and re-lock with the hexnut. You will have to raise/lower the hood multiple times to ensure proper fitment.

(also raise that adjustment knob that you have been playing with.....to the highest setting (middle of high) with the light up, so it will return to the proper level.

Once the bucket/lid is adjusted to the hood, you will then be required to adjust the bulbs to proper level. There is adjustment screws on the projector housing.

    Good luck.

  • Nothing wrong with what IcemanBHE said regarding the adjustement of the bucket in the hood but those 4 nuts and torx bolts are very certainly not the ones that adjust the aim of the lights.
The hint to not use the big knob in front to adjust the light is correct though - although others had the feeling that their adjustment on this knob was permanent ;) Its sole purpose is to manually raise and lower the bucket (many turns needed)

ECE headlights have tiny torx heads extruding from the back of the headlight bucket. Those are part of the assy that fasten the reflector/lens to the bucket. They are used to adjust the horizontal and vertical aim of your lens assy. Over time and similar to so much other plastics the three pronged nuts/clamps break apart. What happens then is that the entire lens assy dips down and cannot be adjusted anymore.
If this is the case the headlight needs to be taken apart and all three distance & adjustment pieces need to be replaced.

A huge pictorial is here. In case you haven´t done so you need to sign up for the German speaking bit of the board to view this. Use the UserCP go to Networking/Group Memberships and sign up. There are tons of pictures detailing the problem and the repair. The pictured plastic screws can be purchased from Fredi/Switzerland but you can of course also replace those with the BMW OEM bits.

    Cheers
