• Hello,
What is a fair price for a stock low milage 850i 6spd. Something with 40 to 70,000 on it. Just a nice clean car. Is 20k enough or will I be the blue guy in the corner holding my breath. LOL
    Regards

  • The current market seems pretty mixed in prices.

6 speeds usually bring a premium. A car with full records is another premium. Low mileage--the $40k end--is another premium.

Most are nice clean cars because big BMW's age well and if they are even close to well treated they will be nice.

If you are looking for a Perfect, low mileage, full records and nary a care in the world car you may be the blue guy holding his breath in the corner!!

But then again you could get lucky too.

Keep looking until you find what you want.

I decided that I wanted an 840 in Arctic Silver for under $20k after looking for a couple of months.

Lo and Behold--1 week later 10 miles from my house for $17k!!

  • Here are some sites where you can compare car prices, mileage, etc.

    http://www.roadfly.org
    http://www.dupontregistry.com
    http://www.ebay.com
    http://www.cars.com
    http://www.autotrader.com
    http://www.parkplaceltd.com
    http://www.hemmings.com
    http://www.bmwcca.org

Most of these sites usually have some 8s listed for sale.

I would most highly recommend the bmwcca site. There is no guarantee, but I think people who join car clubs tend to take better car of their cars. Most of the cars I see listed there always have service records available, and often the sellers are selling to buy a newer model. Also, you usually get a better price buying from private individuals than from dealers. The downside is that car club members are more likely to know the value of their car, so probably not too many steals to be had.

Anyway, good luck -- hope this helps.

  • Purchase

I am going to look at a car with all the basic upgrades today. It has been parked for two years due to the amount of toys the owner has, tough to be him.SOB,SOB. He purchase the car had it shipped home drove for two months and got power hungry. The local Dinan dealer replaced the intake, chiped the engine, full Koenig exhaust, Oz wheels, and a 3.15ls rear. He didn't mention if it was a Dinan or Koenig rear though. Then put 800 miles on it and got busy with divorce new toys and work. He's asking high 20's. I forgot to ask on the phone if he did any brake or susp. work. I will look when I get there. The car is for the wife, she's like a giggly school girl at the age of 46. Thanks for the quick reply's. Have a great day.

  • If the car has been literally sitting for two years, I would be careful, depending on where the guy lives. In more humid parts of the country, having a car sit without running it could leave it more prone to rust and corrosion.

Make sure you take a real good look at the underside. A little rust on the exhaust is okay, but not anywhere else on the main body.

Best would be to take it to a reputable dealer or independent and pay them for a good two or three hour thorough inspection.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

  • Nice drive

Well after a 520 mile round trip and a ok dinner I was a little disappointed:-( Why do peaple let their cars just sit??? In my first life I worked to a very good B tech stage. Now I can just turn wrenchs for a little side money and my own projects. Tough job making money on flat rate. After finding the leaks, paint work, missing bolts, broken covers, ruined brake rotors from sitting on the car that was dealer maintained. Although I have never meet a service advisor that wasn't selling.LOL. This was with a flash light in the dark in a gravel driveway. Service 1 Service 2 what is that. I was told I don't know?? The owner was proud that he just changed the original plugs at 80K. He said that he forgot to put a wire on and couldn't tell for a week of driving he was firing on 11!!!! He had the dealer put on a 2k intake and not replace the leaking valve cover gaskets!! Then they said if it runs I don't like to mess with it. I am starting to think that maybe I need to get someone elses unfinished project and just replace everything. It might be the same $$ in the end. Maybe I just needed a reality check on what a 14 year old car is like in the real world. Do peaple really pay the 26,500 price this guy wants? Sorry for the rambling, for the guy's who are owners be happy that your shopping is over. Have a great day.

  • That guy sounds like he's freebasing brake fluid if he thinks $26.5k is a fair price.

Don't give up on your search. Getting a good car is like getting a good home -- if you have the time to shop around and wait, the right deal will come along. You must be patient and you will know it when you see it.

If you really want a steal, check those websites EVERY DAY, TWICE A DAY. It could take a few weeks or a few months, but something will come along.

When I was shopping for my car, missed two or three good deals because they had gone by the time I called. I once found a '95 CSI on cars.com with 120k miles asking $25k. I called the guy within a few hours of the ad being placed, and he was already working out a deal to sell it to one of the guys on the Roadfly board.

If your schedule will allow, make it your mission to be the first and you'll find a great car at a price you can be happy with in a good enough condition that you won't end up paying double the asking price to get it back to good condition.
