Finally Wayne!.
That's the one but you do need to use your own rear cover and 95% probability that the front CV coupling is a small one meaning you may need to use yours. If you are lucky and it's a late 7 series it may have a 840 compatible coupling.
If you need to change you need a competent diff rebiulder, not so much for the change but to set the bearing preload. There is a crush sleeve on the pinion between the front and rear bearings which when new provides the clearance required to start at "no pre load" and when the big nut is torqued up the sleeve will crush allowing pre load.
The secret is crushing slowly and knowing the feel because if you do it too tight then it's a complete tear down and restart with a new sleeve.
If the bearing preload is too loose or too tight the bearing will fail and you also risk the pinion gears, no if but or maybe
You will need a new front oil seal from the stealers as well as a crush sleeve.
Then it's welcome to the "Tyre Friers"club!
cheers
Ideal well hopefully the guy will be in touch today so then it will just be a case of finding a guy to fit it.
Cheers for all your help.
My chances are looking bleak on getting hold of a diff I have been ringing breakers / dismantlers all day and they are fresh out of suitable diffs. My last resort (probably the most expensive) is to contact FAB on Tuesday after the bank holiday. So I'm keeping everything crossed.
Now I'll be the first to admit that I may be wrong on this so everyone please feel free to jump in here, but I'm sure these'll do the job:

Wayne ,I've been toying with this idea
I thinking of reverting back to a standard diff Yeah i know what you're thinking, but having driven a 97 model 840 for 350 miles on Wednesday & totally enjoyed the exprience I'm serious about the changeover
With my car having the extra grunt i now feel it would suit me best.
So if you want it ,I will need £400 , i'm hoping the garage have still got my old one but let me know if your in
Now you will see how hot your car really is because those 3:91's are Way to big for your car. Those gears are not letting your SC work how it wants to!
@ Steve, like I said I am going to give FAB a ring but let me know if the garage has your old one and we can go from there. Does this mean you have got a 97 model as well
@ Stuart, I have no idea
Wayne if youre thinking wow £400 wait untill tuesday, phone fab, if they have got one be prepared for £700 delivered
Fair enough, well I will take it off your hands.
Oops yeah wayne i bought a 97 840 sport ,I'm goina frag the roof liner & the front [sport seats] & get rid , it's not a bad car , just OK When I've finished with mine it will be SO
Cool well give me the nod when you have removed the diff from your car
No probs mate, but only after you have enquired on Tuesday.
That way you should feel happier with the deal
okay
whilst you are dismantling your car Steve..... can I call 'dibbs' on your SC ??
Sorry dude SC not for sale
Steve, just contacted FAB about an M5 diff, they have one and the total cost inc VAT & delivery comes to £308.75.
The Robbing Bastards had £600 from me last year!!Go for it ,not much more than eBay
that's a good deal with the VAT + Delivery. Mine was £250 (cash) but had to go to London for it (I live in Lancashire)
Hope it's in good nick.
Just ordered it from FAB the car is booked in for Monday
Cheers guys.
