The M72 is from 1988. It's mentioned in quite a few books about BMW engines. The picture you posted comes from the two-book set "BMW Dimensions: Engines That Made History" (or the German version "BMW Dimensionen: Geschichte Des Motors - Motor Der Geschichte").
The M70 may have been in production from 1988 but it was in development quite a few years before that. The M72 was just an experimental spin-off that was cancelled because it didn't meet the comfort demands for luxury cars (according to BMW - I think it didn't meet the budget ).
It was also during these days BMW developed the "Goldfish" V16.

According to the "BMW Dimensions" books the M72 was able to deliver 355 hp.

The latest BMW V12 modified by Power Plant Racing, is this 5.5 liter with a custom made down draft intake system. It's an M73 bottom end bored to 86mm, M70 heads, ported with custom roller cams. It made about 420hp at 6600 rpm. You can get more info at racingpowerplant.com -
