• Hi,

After my car thumped into trans failsafe a few weeks ago i got the news today from the tranny specialists in glasgow that the box needs reconditioned at the cost of £2368. The box threw codes of 160 CAN ABS/DSC signal, 100 gear monitoring (2nd/4th gear), 106 stall speed monitoring
I had already tried changing the oil and filter plus the two speed sensors inside the box but had no joy.Really gutted asi have only had it for 6 weeks or so and i now dont know what to do.
Does anyone know what other cars have the same box and are they just plug and play? On realoem.com when you look at the E31 tranny it says
A5S 440Z - PD but on others i.e E38 740i it says A5S 440Z - TB.What are the digits at the end? I dont want to buy a box from a scrappy and it doesnt work.

    Any help would be appreciated

    1997 840ci

    thanks
    Derek

  • The gearbox from an E38 will be fine, the postfix on the part number refers to the software version (IIRC). My friend had a very similar problem with his E38, he changed the box himself on his front drive:

He kept the same valve body because (like you) he was worried about the postfix on the part number and the fact that the valve body had been refurbished by ZF recently. Unfortunately it turned out the fault was with the valve body, so it went back up on the blocks again to fit the 2nd-hand valve body. All has been fine since.

It cost him a total of £400 including box, filter and fluid.

  • Hi,
Just got a couple of qoutes through thepartsgateway.co.uk

    BM Bitz £422
    Quarry motors £722

they come with a 90 day warranty and i have e-mailed back to see what car they came from and mileage.I take it fitting a box with the different software version will not matter and i dont need anything re-programmed etc.

Im also waiting on word back from ZF who have said they will try and track a refurbed box for me aswell.

    Is my box a ZF5HP24?

    Thanks

  • If you canfirm that your box is a zf5hp24 , then I know of 1 that came from a 740 il, A guy I know has had it for years, intending to put it in a project car that he has never built.
Comfirm the data and I will approch him on your behalf.

  • The BMW part number is A5S 440Z, the ZF number is 5HP24. There is a metal label on the bottom of the gearbox, this will give you the exact part number and I would recommend having a look before making any expensive decisions.

  • Hi Timm,

I had the car up on ramps today and couldnt find any metal tag, All i could see was the green sticker on the sump pan.As the car is 03/1997 it looks like its the A5S440Z.Will let you know what boxes are available and off which car.

    cheers

OK, I have spoken to my guy, The box is a ZF5hp30 from a 740il 1990.
so I suspect it'sof no use.
    never mind ,worth a try.

    Hi,
Thanks for trying, I appreciate your help.

Now i just got an e-mail from ZF saying that my car 03/1997 has a GM box.I have been on the net for days now and all points to the ZF5HP24 which was introduced in sept 1996 so i dont know where they got this info from.Realoem states its the ZF5HP24 so i think i will go ahead and order one.
    cheers

The GM 'box may have been used in certain cars for the US market.

    "...The gearbox used in the 840ci was changed in 09/1996 from the A5S 560Z (5HP30) to the Steptronic A5S 440Z (5HP24). .."

I think that the suffix digits ...560z ad ...440z refer to the torque capacity of the gearbox, meaning that later cars seem to have a lower-rated 'box.

There are some fault codes given in the attachment. However, the faults that you are experiencing may be related to the controller, rather than the gearbox itself. It's probably worth checking this before changing out the 'box.

  • Hi,
So im glad i now at least know the exact box number so thanks for that, When you say the controller, Do you mean the gearbox ECU.And if so how do i check that its ok. Its in my mates garage right now and he will be dropping out the box in a couple of days time.I called Mackie transmissions
in Glasgow again and the said they have lots of experience with this type of box due to the amount of cars they are on and also stated that after running their diagnostics, Checking codes and test driving the car that they were sure a refurb would cure the problem. So i guess i have to take their word for it and try another box, I suppose if it makes no difference i will be chapping their door at some point.

    Thanks

  • My friend (with the E38) got the same CAN error and speed-monitoring error when his box failed. I understood the speed monitoring and gear monitoring errors (as the input is whizzing around and the output should have been but wasn't), but never understood the CAN error. We were a bit concerned about the EGS unit as well.

However, once the new valve body was fitted and the errors deleted they didn't come back again and all was well on the gearbox....

  • Hi,
I finally recieved my gearbox from an early 1998 535i, My mechanic went about fitting the box and everything was in place until he went to fit the wiring, He says the connection on the old box was on the drivers side and the plug onthe new box is on the passenger side, Also he says both plugs are different.Any ideas guys as im losing the plot with this now as the car has been off road for 8 weeks now. Please help.

    Regards
    Derek

  • Sorry to hear of this dilema!

I would guess that even though the connectors may be physically different, the signals contained therein should be the same for each.

Now, the problem is to obtain information on the two connectors.

It may be possible to call ZF for this info. They have a UK service centre as a first port of call. Otherwise the dealers may have more information on the Technical Information System (TIS).

Does the new gearbox have any cut-out or blanking piece to be able to relocate a new connector to the other side?

Do you have the full part number and serial numbers of each gearbox?
