As the title indicates I have a good friend now stranded in france because battery went flat (that a problem but not the main one). He has got the car restarted but has an Engine |Fault message, the engine is running poorly stuttering (limp mode I guess)and speed is limited to 35mph. Its a 2004 6 Series 4.5i
Help with a 645 E64

Only thing to try without it being hooked upto diagnostics is remove battery earth cable for 20 mins, hopefuly will reset it?
Regards Trevor -
That could well be a valvetronic motor fault.
Not much he can do without proper diagnostics or just PX it for a 10 year older E31 and gain a whole lot more reliability.
Those early 6-Series were an epic for reliability issues, thats why they are worth nothing in the used car market.
BMW even rebadged them as the 650 to rid them of the stigma. Numerous software issues too so it may need to have the latest software installed, about the update number 2321 I believe!
Definately not 6Tech.

Just popped over to see the car and my code reader listed the following but with no definitions

2746 No match in database
2747 No match in database
any ideas? -

Not sure what the next step is but its a start -
Do they have Crank position sensors?

Alex I dont know to be honest. All this came about after the battery went flat in france and a farmer jump started it for him.

Found this...
Sounds like a problem with the VVT control unit itself or power supply to the VVT
The VVT unit can cause the missfires apparently...
Susceptible to voltage anomalies.... -
Sounds right just need to know how to put it right
thanks Alex you are a star.
