ps: There is also "ECU: GS 8.55, Engine: M62, Transmission: 5HP24, from 01.05.97 till31.08.97", but again this doesn't appear to cover my Dec 97 car..?

According to the official BMW ETK the GS8.55 is the last version, from 9/1996 till manufacturing stop in 1999. :top:

Even if this would not be the case and your EGS had a newer version (very theoretical...), I don't believe the OBD error codes would change their meaning...

  • UPDATE:
I moved the car today driving in 4th gear and she is safely home, has enjoyed a proper wash to remove unwanted tree sap, and a tyre check.
The car drives perfectly in reverse, even up a hill, which I assume fully rules out the fault being the torque converter.
Right now I am assuming clutch drum, or (forward clutch drum?) failure in gears 1,2 & 3.

I still cannot decide whether sourcing a 2nd hand box best or ask a specialist to try repair mine, but probably the former. Either way, I need someone qualified to fit a replacement gearbox. So if any UK readers know a suitably experienced tranny specialist within reach of London, please recommend them here. Thanks.

I think, is really a matter of how much mileage you have got on your own gearbox...
If you think the 2nd hand gearbox will have a lower mileage, then go for it :grin2:

  • Hart to tell without inspecting the gearbox itself. If the engine got hit then the case of the box might been damaged and might also transferred some load through the crankshaft to the inside of the box. I guess the torque converter would pick up most of the damage in that case, so you could still use the clutch assembly behind.

The 8 series is a bloody well made car... no damage to the windscreen although the front is gone. :top:

  • Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Get in touch with ZF directly once the source of the problem has been established. Contact
A mechanical damage with the highest of likelihoods will leave its traces in the oil pan - no metal parts for me would mean no internal damage.

They may have the facilities in the UK to replace parts when necessary. Parts for the 5HP24 are available (other than for the Getrag manual boxes).
Don´t forget to have that above mentioned switch opened and checked for good measure - it is a very cheap check ;)

    Fingers crossed!

  • I wasn't seriously considering taking the tranny from that car in the photo Reinhard, :) was just curious if a gearbox could survive that kind of impact.
I'm still at a complete standstill as far as formulating a plan. I thought of contacting zf but felt unsure. However it cannot do any harm. i just don't have a clue how they could help really? Maybe they would recommend a specialist to check it over. Meanwhile though i will have the switch looked at as you suggest by my regular guy.
I must admit, having my own unit repaired feels much more tolerable than trying a swap but i guess relative costs is the main determining factor.

  • First: drop the pan and have a good looksie at the condition of what you find there. If nothing found that raises suspicions: reattach pan, re-fill gearbox according to workshop procedure, check switch - see what happens. You´re now at 100GBP for materials.

All will change if you find metal abrasions or lumps in the pan. Then the gearbox wil have to come out anyway and go to a gearbox specialist, amongst them (here) ZF workshops.

    Cheers
    Reinhard

  • Update:
Someone at ZF kindly gave me a lead to a diagnostic who will look at the shifter etc to establish for sure if its an external, or internal issue.
Luckily they are based near me in N. London.
They are happy to take a look and they seem to know their onions.
Any replacement part/s or reconditioned unit would need to be ordered through a different zf-approved supplier based in Glasgow.
Obviously i will still have the option of finding a used one on eBay but there hasn't been any for ages come along.
