Wheels options on 850 Ci

  • Guys what wheel options do i have for my 1993 850 Ci ?.I have non OE BMW wheels on the car at the moment which look ok and are in great condition with good tyres but i just got it back from the dealer after service and they are saying that the shake at the front wheels under breaking is down to the non OE wheels.I am wondering if any of the huge choice of BMW wheels will fit or is the 8 a unique fitment ?.Lots of ebay adds etc say that most wheels will fit ok but i am not so sure. Any advice is welcome.

  • The older BMW's like the our 8s have smaller hubs than the newer models.

Most aftermarket wheels have the larger new style hole in the center.

These require Hub Centric rings to adapt to our hubs. I hav brass rings in my wheels but have heard of aluminum and even plastic rings being used.

The first thing that I would do is find a place with a really good high speed wheel balancer and while the wheels are off check the rings. They should be on the very outside edge and undamaged.

If the problem persists with well balanced wheels and correct rings.

    1) Pad material deposited on the brake rotor (commonly called a warped rotor)

    2) Control arm Bushings or tie rod ends in the front end are worn.

  • By the way. As a general principal the dealer will always blame Aftermarket parts for the problem.

  • yeahi'll back up Terrys comment, so dont be put of by what you here from the dealers!!

I've got some Breyton split rims on mine, centering rings fitted but still exprience a viberation at 55 mph, i've had the balance checked twice to no avail then i saw an advertisement for for poly bushes for the thrust arms, best £50 ever spent .

    No more prob's

  • Thanks for the feedback guys, i had the front suspension / steering checked and the steering guide arms were replaced. Apparently the bushes are ok after a second look (the car was there for a week because of steering / suspension replacements but the dealer couldnt get parts then all of a sudden the parts are no longer needed after a second inspection hmm).Any idea where i can get the bushes from and can a local specialist fit them ?.My dealer charges £96 + vat per hour labour. The car does clunk a bit over speed bumps / pot holes.I will have the wheels checked this weekend.

  • Carlos

Ebay is the place for the bushes, go to bmw parts, then e31, there still advertised at around £52 a pair, the clunking as you described, can be remedied by changing the drop links, again can behad for around £50 but from the main stealers.

Find a specialist in your area, i doubt they'll charge any more than £40 pr hr.

  • An often overlookrd problem is the sector nut (top) on the steering box.

They are a fair bastard to get at on RHD models but its worth the time. The test is to jack the front and try to wobble the wheels by holding them at the 9 & 3 oclock position. There should be no loosenes felt. If you do let me know I will give you step by step instructions.

I did everything that you have read sbout on every site you visited but so far I have not heard anyone else speak of the box but trust my experience, it stopped the shimmy (under brakes) and it is a no cost fix!

  • Sorry Im late in this conversation. may have the answer for you.

I recently put 20 inch triple chromed M parallels on my 93 ci, they fit fine, no rubbing- and they LOOK amazing on these cars. I paid about 2,000 including tires - hell of a deal. if your interested I could snap a pic or two when the rain stops.

    Mike

  • Hi yes that would be great, thanks.I have 17" on my car at the moment and they look tiny in the arches.Did you go for OE wheels or replicas ?BMW told me that fitting replicas creates problems with braking vibration etc etc.Any thoughts !

  • How's the ride quality? Any problems with the traction control? How heavy are the wheels? I was thinking of 20s but I'm so comfortable with the drivability of 18s. Pics would be great!

  • Hi guys, been away so sorry for the slow response time.

I have been exceedingly happy with the 20" M parallels. They balanced out very easily (according to the installers) and are exceedingly true to round. Vibration is unfelt.
as for traction- Im afraid that I cannot honestly report good or bad. My car has only 300 ponies, traction control, and the prior make of tire was very poor. Im currently running the new Nitto's, and have witnessed the warning light for traction loss light up on occassion, but have not been able to break the rear end loose more than enough to just make me smile... and I live in the rainy state of WA. I must also admit that Im fairly new to my car- and used to driving cars that can set the rear tires ablaze without warning... like the Porsche 928. So for me, I am happy with the choice I made.

I purchased my set of wheels and Tires through Evergreen Imports (Eugene OR.) find em online. and the price was a no brainer cvoupled with their feedback. Robert (the owner) was very helpful and I would appreciate it if you dropped my name (mike from Bellingham) should you decide to purchase from him.

I will take pics in the morning if it's not raining, and once Ive washed the car. :D

Oh... I will say that... I get infinately more inquiries about the car now that I have these wheels on. To me, they simply make the car (aesthetically speaking).

  • And Robert at Evergreen does understand 8's. He was up until recently the owner of a Dakar yellow Euro 850CSi.

  • Are they staggered? What size tires are you using?

    Thanks,

  • Yes the wheels are staggered, 20 x 8's (i think for the front) and 20 x 9.5 or 10 on the rear.

The tire sizes are something like 245 35 20 and 275 35 20 or something like that. The ride is still quite nice- I get a lot more sensation of the road's contours up through the steering wheel- kind of annoying on a some stretches of street- but mostly the feel is quite decent.

Im taking her on her second 5 hour drive from Bellingham down to Olympia and up 101 to Naselle/greysriver. Great driving roads there through the fir tree plantations and along the rivers. All I can say for sure is that the pics I posted are pisspoor to the reality of staring at the car with these wheels on her. They have a very nice coating of thick chrome-
    :D
