840 ponderings!

  • I just wondered what it is that makes us all feel as though we're beating the system by owning these wonderful cars? I was driving through the local High St at the weekend and coming the other way was a 56 reg 6 series. I tried to like the design of the car but feel, even to this day, that it still doesnt do it for me! Even though there is a £60000 price differential why is it that no real progress has been made? Sure it may have ABC, EDC, THR, HUD, ETC ETC you get the drift but does that really make it any more satisfying to own? Couple that with £1000 per month depreciation , which I know our cars used to suffer, future production numbers, and above all the need that you have to step foot in a BMW dealer. It also looks as though the front end was added by a totally different design team.
Each day when I look out of the window and see the car from above I still get goose pimples. Sad I know and this is my second after having a new one in 99 but that feeling never mellows.
    Oh well

  • value for money

You cant get more metal and value for money.

I wouldnt say nothing has changed because a friend of mine owns a fleet of cars inc a 645 conv and an M6 and ive driven the 645 and its nice. But then any new car feels nice and tight. The steering is spot on all the suspension is nice and soft and its very refined.

But then again so is the 8 series esspecially when it was brand new out of the box.

I keep looking at auto trader for a new car and so far theres nothing that does it for me. The only let down on my eight is the brakes and suspension. Hopefully I will be rectyfying that problem.

  • I can't speak for everyone but I fell in love with the 8 the very first time I drove one. I describe my 840 as 'sex on wheels'. Almost the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

The car has not dated with it's styling and now you can buy one for around 20-25% of their price when new (I could never afford a new one) what a privilege to actually own and drive one.

I get young guys coming up and drooling over it all of the time. Suffer in your jocks guys!!

    Cheers Helpsy.

  • decided to buy one when I was 17, or 15 years ago. Finally got round to it almost a year ago to the day.

Still think BMW messed up the new 6, which is a bit obese. Nice wheels though

Only bad angle for me is full on side view. Front, oblique and rear are awesome.

Interior has dated ok, but showing it's age with some of the controls and switches - especially the terrible headlight and fog sliders.

Not enough to stop me loving it, bit like my wife :lol:

  • Told my wife the other day that driving the 8 was the best fun you can have with your clothes on;... then rubbed my chin and hummed thoughfully. She knew I meant that I could take off my clothes and drive it then it would be the most fun either way. I still think that the people gawking would be looking at the car.

Back to the topic. When I was in Galway recently I went to a specialised dealer/repairer (nice guys) and whilst waiting looked over their stock. Mostly top line Mercs, Audis and 1 Ferrari and all quite recent (3/4 yo at most). Out of 9 or so cars the only ones I would have considered swapping the 8 for (and note – I am not talking about any funds exchanging hands) was the Ferrari (it was beautiful – classic looking interior and the ) and the absolute top of the line Merc with full leather and every option (but I would have insisted on the serious stone chipped bonnet and cracked bumper being fixed). For me, there is absolutely nothing close to the style of the 8. I have always said I wanted a car that is big but a 2-door so it says ‘Yes it is impractical but I don’t care’ and had always thought it would be one of those thumping monstrous Mercs and not something as beautiful as the 8. To be able to purchase them for 10% of the original price and get a car with <100thd miles is ridiculous. When I get this car back to Oz in a few years it will make even more sense (cheaper fuel, wider roads and longer distances in a straight line).
