Hi to everyone.
I just want to pick your brains a little.
Where is the best place to pick up a proper workshop manual for 850Csi ?
I would like to change my radio for one with Ipod and telephone muting connections built in, but my local halfords and Elliots have both told me there are no standard euro connectors for my car and that they may have to rewire speakers and possibly even change the amp and i would almost certainly loose the cd changer.
I was just wondering how you guys have overcome the connection problems and what else should i look out for?
I am also considering purchasing diagnostic software and would like some advise on the best system and where to go.
Look forward to hearing from you all.
Allen

You can download a workshop manual from www.wuffer.net.
The radio cassette player is a pre-amp head unit only, effectively a "deck" in home Hi-Fi terms, the multichannel amp is in the boot so changing the head unit does indeed mean rewiring all the speakers via seperate cross-overs from the head unit or using new multi-channel amps.
Yes, you will lose functionality of the CD Changer but with an i-Pod connection, does that matter?
This is what your boot could end up looking like.
I understand the GT1 is a very good diagnostic tool but I use a Snap-On Scanner and it has never failed in it's task.

Not strictly true. Unlike most good aftermarket amps, the factory amp runs on speaker-level inputs from the head unit. So replacing the factory head unit with an aftermarket one will work fine, just using an adaptor cable like that posted above.
I have a Becker unit in my car and it works perfectly through the factory amp.
Just don't be tempted to turn it up too high; I'm not sure if the factory amp has protection circuitry to prevent damage if it receives too much power into its speaker level inputs, but bear in mind that aftermarket head units will be putting out more power than the BMW units when cranked up.
