I decided to get the 840 out of the garage yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks to give it a wash but when I started the engine there was quite a loud knocking/tapping noise coming from it. The speed and volume rose and fell with engine speed and it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Did you take it for a good run or just let it idle for a bit? These cars are made to be driven and the symptoms describe improper oil flow getting up to the cams, etc. I'd wager it wouldn't be there after even a 10 mile spirited trek.

I got a bit scared to be honest! I was hoping it might be something as simple as improper oil flow rather than something about to fall off...

Sounds quite normal for a V8, even covered by BMW in a technical bulletin. More blurb here:

Nice one, thanks!

Mine does that on first startup occasionally. If I immediately shut down and start up again it clears it.

...
Did you had also an engine wash?
The head covers on the M62 V8 aren't really waterproof, so isn't unusual to get some water in the spark hub if you try to clean the engine bay... -
M60s are famous for stuck cam followers if sat for a period of time.
Take it out and get it hot. After warmed up, rev to 3k a few times.
Very common on the V8s.
EDIT...see Timm already posted that...
