Well guys as we are experiencing a little hot weather my car has decided on two occassions not to start when hot. It went for its MOT today and whilst it passed with flying colours it refused to start after the test. The battery was ok all the lights came on, on the dash but nothing not even a click. This also happened on Wednesday outside the BMW dealer 20 mins later she starts! Any ideas where to look fiddle poke etc...
Today at the MOT station they put they fan in front of the engine to help and hey presto!
Its just to hot to start

If cooling down the engine bay helped - I would guess that the starter solenoid is playing up. Unfortunately, getting to the starter to check if the start voltage is getting to it is best done from underneath.

Timm just read this thread
http://forums.bimmerforums.com…=0&highlight=refuse+fuses
Interesting?
Does this apply to the 850 and has anyone experienced this before? -
Well looked at the fuse box under the dash this afternoon and discovered this fuse number 19 melted to the box. It took some time to get it out (one tab borke off in the process). Could this be the reason and if so whats the cause.
Revtor, Gerry, anyone.....
It still recorded a bleep on the multi meter showing it had not blown.... or had it and when warm went open circuit?... -
No, that fuse is for the heating and ventilation system. With the fuse overheated like that, you could have a seized cooling fan.
Hot start issue is most likely to be the starter solenoid.

Fuse 19 is for the blower motor - so unless your car is blown along by it, it won't be that!
-
Gerry where is the cooling fan / location?
As for the starter solenoid any tips or just buy a new starter motor and solenoid if so where is the best source? ££?
Timm are for long drives etc i cant remember the last time I drove the car more than 10 miles? -
Blower motor is behind the pollen filters on the bulkhead.... I have a spare..
Also check the Aux fan in front of the rads is free and clear....
Just my 2p's worth...
Alex

Thank Alex I may take you up on the spare. This may be an indicator of something wrong with the fan in that I of late I get hot are out of the door window vents regardless if the heater is on or off hot or cold. How easy is it to swop the blower fan?
Has there been a how to ? -
Access looks excellent to the blower motor once the microfilter housing is removed:
Removal of the housing covered here:

How easy is a starter motor change? Is there a how to on that?
-
It will be best to check if the starter motor is the problem rather than the starter relay/ignition switch etc. This can be done by measureing the voltage at pin 11 of the diagnostic connector as the key is turned. The other probe of the meter must be connected to a good earth point on the chassis.
If it rises to the battery voltage and the starter does not run, the starter or starter solenoid is the problem.
If the voltage stays at 0V, the problem is elsewhere.
Here's the pinout of the diagnostic connector:
-
Thanks Timm I will give that a try next time.
Alex I had a look at the aux fan and it span freely albeit with a little bear squeal.
I read in another Gerry post about 3 potentially suspect relays do we know there part number/s? Although I cant see the post now?

This was intersting though -
Update today and probably not connected?? Anyway it happened again today and because I was in a car park next to a XK type R I thought I would let him pull away before opening the bonnet. However this time I had left the key in the ignition and the ignition on (all the lights on the dash etc.) Anyway he pulled off and I thought I would give another go before opening the bonnet and hey presto it started straight away.... Lazy relay?????
-
Well update: Today on the way home from work I stopped at the shops to buy some food. When I came out I turned the key and no response. I then turned the key to the position II for 10 seconds and then turned the key and the car started straight away. So that to me seems more relay and less starter motor. What do you think guys? If so what relay do I change?
-
What about the key code sensor ring in the ignition key surround?
Just a thought
-
Say what!
Tell me more... (at least its looking less like the starter solenoid££)
But how would the heat effect this? -
Lloyd; do you have a service key? (no transponder) if yes try it next time it happens.
-
Lloyd,
There is a ring antenna in the ignition key surround which interrogates the key and enables the ignition. I was wondering if there might be an intermittent fault with that. Try Koenig's suggestion.

Gents my key is one I had cut at the local Timpsons the day after i bought the car so that I could preserve the one BMW that came with the car. Therefore I dont thinkit has the transponder (1991 model)
