Clutch horror......

  • I just discovered that the OEM clutch kit or parts is currently no longer available for the CSi.

Didn't check for the stock 850i but that would be useless in the CSi anyway, its only just adequate for the 300 bhp.

  • Really??
What about the 450HP SC'd 850 manual in New York?
Haven heard that that car has had any clutch issues.

Sad that BMW is cutting parts for these cars though.

  • EDC dampers, at least front, are also out of stock. But they are now made to order. Expect the price to go up a lot. I got the last left one - right was produced. Took a month, but retained the original price.

There is always your own uprated clutch kit Gerry, as you fitted to my CSi. Along with the lightened flywheel, it is very nice to use too:cool:

Yes, I can still supply uprated clutches with the stage 1 being as close to a stock replacement as possible and there are of course a few aftermarket suppliers out there but the point is.......BMW have discontinued, and yesterday I found that the plug leads for cyls 1-6 for the 750i have also been discontinued and are now all gone. How long before everyone using the 8 series leads on both 7 and 8 series depletes the stock of those?

I think this is a continuation of the demise of the manufacture of the lead sensors.

If anyone wants some rear EDC's that worked when I removed them, I have just 1 pair available before they become NLA too. Already sold the fronts.

What SC 850 in New York?

If thats true, he either doesnt make 450 bhp or he certainly doesnt use a BMW clutch!

Although it was many years ago, my recollection is that BlueAllan's 850 Twin Turbo lived at 450hp-ish levels for some time with the stock clutch. However, a 500hp pull on the dyno promptly exceeded its clamping power (read: roasted it).

If Allan is on this board, perhaps he will chime in with the details.

BTW Gerry - Didn't Allan source his current Spec clutch from you?

    Rgds...

    - John

  • Hi John,

Yes, Allans car is turbocharged rather than supercharged though of course, so the engine loads the clutch higher up the rev range and is therefore more gentle than the torque from the supercharged motor. Of course, we are referring to positive displacement superchargers rather than centrifugal which would be more forgiving, the same as a turbo.

Yes, I did supply Alan with one of my upgraded clutches and I believe he also had the lightweight flywheel too. They seemed to restrain both the power and torque nicely without issue.

Got my cities confused, I meant the Washington DC car

The prototype John made was a US 6-speed, and I haven't heard that it have had any clutch issues, and I believe he uses a stock 850 M70 clutch.

    The car from this thread.

As John chimed in above, I'm sure he can let us know what Clutch Marco's car is running.
