Dear colleagues:
What's in the word - MEETING - and what is not?
Well, let me see if I can explain this simply and easily.
For the past few years I have been trying to comprehend what our events were all about (most of which use the word "meeting") and whether or not I should or could attend.
The word English word "meeting" has been used for all of the following which are very different events:
- ANNUAL BOARD MEETINGS (a periodic business conference)
- STEYR AUSTRIA MEETING 2009 (BMW engine factory tour)
- MUNICH MEETING DINGOLFING 2011 (a board meeting and BMW factory tour)
- STUTTGART MEETING 2012 (a Mercedes museum tour)
- PARIS MEETING 2012 (an annual board meeting)
- VIENNA MEETING 2013 (a city tour and a "rally" - road trip/convoy/parade)Note that the confusion arises between the German and the English connotations versus the various definitions of the word "meeting" in conjunction with the above events.
In German - a social or casual get together is correctly a TREFFEN
In German - an ANNUAL BOARD MEETING is correctly JAHRLICHE SITZUNGIn English - the ANNUAL BOARD MEETINGS are correctly stated
In English - the factory or museum visits are correctly TOURS or VISITS
In English - a get together that involves road trips/convoys is correctly a RALLYSo a get together is a TREFFEN or a RALLY - both can be considered meetings - but a meeting in English implies a CONFERENCE not a social event.
Note that the term RALLY in English encompasses a planned rendezvous or a spontaneous meeting of multiple parties or military units or aircraft or emergency services - a MOTOR RALLY is more specific and implies a race or competition but can also be just and old-timer convoy or parade or road trip.
Initially - and now again, my designation for this event is RALLY for all the reasons explained above and because it is open to the larger club membership, families and friends.
Please use this title International BMW 8er.org RALLY -VIENNA 2013 when making your hotel reservations - our local BMW sponsor and media are keyed to it as well - my goal is to enhance our media profile and attract new members in the area.
As it stands tonight - we already have 35 cars and circa 50 people attending - so I would advise a separate ANNUAL BOARD MEETING or incorporate a maximum of 2 hours in the RALLY agenda on SUNDAY MORNING 0900-1100 or MONDAY MORNING for the board to meet in CLOSED SESSION.
In closing, I recommend and encourage our board members and colleagues to consider these ENGLISH terms and translations when designating the main purpose and activity of future events and to indicate WHO can or should attend and WHY:
- ANNUAL BOARD MEETING
- TOURS or VISITS
- RALLYWith every best wish, Prof. Jack
-
I believe the term is used based on the term "to meet", and to make it sound better the "to" is left out and the "-ing" added to the end.
I agree that the term "meeting" usually stipulates a formal gathering with the goal to reach some conclusion on a specific topic or matter. In the Scandinavian countries we use a derivation of the German "Treffen" called "Treff" when talking about enthusiasts coming together for a social event.
I have seen several native English speaking people using the word meeting regarding similar events in the past.
Looking at this dictionary definition I'm not entirely sure it is completely wrong to use the term as it has been used.
1. The act or process or an instance of coming together; an encounter.
2. An assembly or gathering of people, as for a business, social, or religious purpose. However I will abide and refer to it as Rally.
Oh, and 35 cars is really great, think this will be a huge success.
-
Hi Egil -
Yes - to all of yours my friend - especially with regard to TREFFEN or TREFF which this event clearly is in German usage.
Excepting - to note again - that there is a difference in denotation versus connotation, between your Norwegian understanding of English usage versus dictionary definition and mine as an American university professor - if the event was a few hours long in a room or conference center it would clearly be a meeting - which is substantively different from a car-based driving and museum touring activity spanning several days, several countries and many miles - that is the difference.
Many thanks for yours, if I didn't misspell a word it is because I am not Norwegian, so bear with me....Smile, Jack

Dear Colleagues: Regards actually booking your hotel reservations in Vienna now - it would be better to wait until I at least confirm the contract and lock-in prices, services and details with the hotel on Monday, 17 OCT...YES, I am very grateful for all your enthusiasm and suggestions and advice. Please wait for the RALLY SOP (instructions) to be posted - if everybody now starts giving instructions one year before the event it will be chaos. Cheers, Jack

Hi Jack!
by the way..
We used 2009 the term convention..you wrote.. - STEYR AUSTRIA MEETING 2009 (BMW engine factory tour)
but it was..
2009-08-27..30 - AT - International 8 Series Convention AustriaConvention.. a large formal assembly of a group with common interests
German..;
So it´s the same meaning in English and German
-
Hi Richard -
Yes of course - CONVENTION - definitely works better than meeting too...
But, note the criteria "FORMAL" and that it does not imply nor reflect outside activities or driving or touring...if you say convention to an American he assumes a big gathering with displays and shows in a HALL or a fixed location like a Convention Center.
Again - keep in mind that dictionary definitions in any language (while seemingly correct or sufficient to non-native speakers) - do not always capture the peculiarities inherent in practical USAGE...
In any case - we are getting there - together!
Thanks for yours - looking forward to seeing you again - why don't you zoom by the Kingston Ranch on Bergsiedlung at A-2572 Kaumberg for a drink?
Cheers, Jack
-
We wil say what we always do: Meeting (in English & Dutch), because we are Dutch and the rebels of the world....
-
Good for you!
What language is "weekendmeeting" - German, English, Dutch or Martian?
AsIalwaysdoIwilluseproperenglishtermswhenwritingandspeakinginenglishasthepreferredeventlanguageusingtheeventtitlethat thehosthasdesignatedforhotelreservationspublicrelationsandsponsorsupportpurposesbutyourebelsfromthelowcountriescancertainlycallitwhateveryouwishasyoualwaysdo.
Cheers, Jack
-
Let's say: Dutch, than it can't go wrong....
-
Hey Richard - No doubt you are correct - but just for the record when I was invited to STEYR in 2009 it was referred to as a meeting beforehand, during the tour and afterwards - at least by the folks I had contact with - like Fredi etc... Cheers, Jack
-
hahhahahahha...good to go!
-
I didn't know it's so important what the correct term is for this GEARHEAD GATHERING
And I quite honestly don't give a shit either as long as we have fun - which is guaranteed I guess.Cheers
Wolf -
Vienna rally 2013 - it's all about the cars!
Yo Wolf -
Well, YES - that is my point exactly - to me - a RALLY is:
FUN
ACTION
FANS
CARS
TECHIES
DRIVERS
and GEARHEADS ...A "meeting" is boring, business, table-talk and pedantic pinheads...
Amen...
I hope...

one important thing you forgot about MEETING:
the semi hot brown fluid served together with dust dry cookies from the food discounter.
