I know it'll never happen, [i like my car OEM] but out of interest, where / how would these have been sourced?
Red needles, lol, would be.. still further intriguing..

as ugly as the OEM ones.
I've always wanted a set of white dials as they would look good with my interior but do not know where to source them.
Zitat von wokke;114913as ugly as the OEM ones.
Well, I would never want to rip out my cluster anyway unless absolutely obliged to for some reason. I'm still curious where this set would have been sourced though! [apparently the E31 in question was bought in Germany by the way..]
But Wolf, when you say 'as ugly as the OEM ones' - are you saying standard E31 dials are ugly?

Maybe this one ... http://www.nrauto.com/gugeslisting.php?i=Mjk=&c=BMW&p=MQ==

Absolutely. IMO the E31 dials are absolutely not nice. Other BMWs have much nicer ones. I do exclude the CSi dials though, they look ok.
Here a picture of my E24 ///M635CSi cluster which I consider being a nice one. The chrome rings are not original. And red needles would be nice

But as always a matter of taste. There are people out there who say a yellow E31 is ugly. As we both know: absolutely wrong
What I don't like about the 850i/850Ci/840Ci instrument cluster is the styling of the tick marks on the gauges. Way too dense/prominent. For the 850CSi BMW made a 180 degree turn and went with a minimalistic style which is actually very nice and still looks fresh today:
I absolutely agree with you revtor.

Ha ha it would not run for long like this , overheated , no oil pressure
Running a bench test on this one?

I actually like the regular 850 cluster :). I saw the car which has these gauges (now in canada I think) and thought they actually fit the car. It caught me by surprice because as far as the 8 is concerned i'm not a fan of colored gauges. I really do not like white gauges on the 8's....except maybe if it's on a white car.
Now blue alpina gauges or CSi....<3

Revtor, you wouldn't happen to have the PN for that petrol octane requirement in german do ya? I asked about this for the NA market ones but it would be cool to see one in german
Now that I've been obliged to look comparatively, I would agree the gauges as illustrated by Revtor are far more handsome; a classic BMW look which reminds me of the happy days of my youth.
Prior to this, I have always liked the E31 instruments...and I would never go as far as Wokke, I don't think they're ugly. The M635CSi cluster is classic also, but doesn't appeal to me quite as much as even those on an ordinary E31..
White clusters, I have never been able to warm to, on any car.
The proof, as ever, is in the pudding.. Caifan has stated that he has actually seen the car from my OP and the cluster looks good, so I think the yellow dials would possibly work on a yellow 8 IMO... but I'd willingly swap them, (plus a kidney) for THIS interior...
huldra66: Instrument cluster test :).
CaifanSC: Sorry but I do not know the part number. There's a similar one on the fuel cap.
CaifanSC: It appears the very same "Super Bleifrei min. 95 ROZ" label is also used on the E34. According to the ETK it's part 71 21 2 122 084 for the E34. Please note that this label would apply only to the S70/M73/M60/M62 8 Series - not the M70 as it has lower octane demands. I'm not sure the M73/M60/M62 would have gotten the label because they can also run on fuel with lower octane rating thanks to the knock sensors.
i have 2 Clusters and a Set of Rings.. i would prefer the CSI ones.. with red needles.. but they´re hard to get..
These are my versions..

SmileitsMe: I have heard first hand accounts of people painting the needles red with a fluorescent type paint and it apparently looks as good as a factory finish.
factory finish.. yess.. please.. who can do this in a really good way?
when you look at the last pic.. i tried myself.. im unhappy with the result..
Hmm...hard to tell if they had better results, because in your last picture, the finish looks very good to me.
It was a discussion on one of the forums but not sure which...
The types of paint to use were discussed. If i can find it via a forum search ('needles') then i'll post interesting comments here later..

You beat me to it mate, Koizumi over on Bimmerforums did this to his needles and it looks very good.
