I Bus?

  • How different the I Bus in E31 is compared to the new models? As far as I know E31 was the first BMW to have a CAN (one of the first ever?).

Is it as easy to access and where are the access points? The new cars have them in several places, like in the trunk and under the bonnet.

The reason why I'm asking is that I'd like to interface it with my PC in the car so that I could display some of the information that OBC does as the PC's display fully covers it and it would be nice to have all the relevant information visible on one display. :)

  • There really is no comparison between ours and the new systems.

As far as I have seen so far ours is limited to the radio to CD connection and has no external controller. I have been know to have mistaken understanding though.

There is a lot of I-Bus info here. You can read for an awful long time

It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others. Mine sometimes feels that way.

  • Something like this:

The IBUS depends on the CAN!
Only the newer cars (840CI / 850CI) have a CAN for the engine.

You see on the right site the EKM simulator and on the left the small controller for the MID.

Here is an other interface (prototype) for the oil temperature, oil pressure and voltage in my Test-Car. :P

You can start and stop the system when you push the Check Controll Button twice.

  • Hello Martin,

Nice job on the computer. I have a question concerning breake upgrade. I saw an article on the german site where you are painting your intake manifold followed by a picture of BMW high performance calipers and discs. I could not understand if it was installed on your car or on another one. You may be able to answer the following questions.
I would like to know what kind of brakes they are and how much they cost.
Thank you in advance for your answer.

  • Hi Martin,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is the correct post but the picture you attached is different. The calipers I am talking about have BMW written on them. Did your friend paint BMW on it himself ?
Also, do you know if the dealer provides a paper saying that these brakes are made for a BMW 850 ? You know to be able to pass the DMV (Strassenverkehrsamt) check.
    Thanks again,
    Michael

  • The brakes are the same. In the first post without wheels, here with mounted wheels.
The BMW logo ist made by cutting letters from a paper.
The brake is a Brembo with 8 piston pliers, the disk is 360.
    Price 3'000 Euro
If you need more information please contact Thomas under

    AMG SL 65 on a 850 (car from TI-SI)

TI-Si and Engl (both Thomas) develop this two brake systems for the 850.

  • Martin ...

Sorry to ask about the earlier thread in the exchange ... and maybe a stupid question

Is there an alternative to implementing such a monitor on an earlier E31 / 1992?

    Thanks
