Air con R12 or R134??

  • My air con has been getting less and less effective until now the pump does'nt cut in (due to low refrigerant I guess) but how do i tell if my car has R12 or r134??
The service history says the air con was recharged 2 1/2 years ago but does'nt say what with.

Easy to tell or shall I just book the car into the local air con specialist???

  • I think this topic has come up before - try having a quick look in the archives for more detailed info but the easist way to tell which flavour you've got is to loo at the fittings on the ends of the filling pipe for the aircon, the R134 has a different fitting (can't remember exactly what it looks like though so surf the archives)

  • Thought the r12 was banned for use.
Not to friendly to the ozon layer I believe.
I think it's been banned for more than 2,5 years.

I know my old girl had the bad stuff in her, but I don't have an a/c problem.... yet.

I was told the a/c specialist could tell by looking at the refill coupling on the car what kind of gass was in the system.

If I misspelled a word it's because I'm Norwegian, so bear with me.

  • R12 is now illegal to use in the UK, and therefore probably all of Europe, and therefore the car must be converted to R134a which I believe involves simply replacing the filter/drier.

IF it was re-charged 2 - 3 years ago it will most certainly have R134a in it.
