fail trans safe

  • hey guys, i have read the previous posts on that notice, only in my case
it came very rendomly, so it makes me loose comfident in my car, can anyone direct me to a problem, it has happend 3 times in 2 months maybe, once after the car was parked for over a week which i did think was to do with a battery low current problem(and only a few moments after starting her up), but the two other times where very random in the middle of the road, 5 kilometers from start.........which made me worry...............helpsy

  • There are dozens of reasons to put the transmission into failsafe which include both engine and transmission faults. First thing to check is transmission oil level and do a full OBD fault code check then go from there.
This is one of the most difficult problems to diagnose.
If you stop, lock the car, wait a couple of minutes and restart, does it reset ok?

  • thanks 8 tech, the car went trought a full check without connection to that problem last week, everything shows to be fine, when the problem accures i'm loosing the power, after a restart or two, even three the last time everything is fine again.........

  • what transmission is this? the 4 or the 5 speed?
how is it shifting? rough or smooth
Most important how is it shifting from D to R? is it slow and a bit rough?

My 90 4 speed needs an overhaul now, and that is just after 138.000km
When shifting from D to R and back it's slow, and then it shifts it shifts a bit hard.

I've had the trans fail light 2 times but that was when it changed gear during wheelspinn. (pulled out in traffic a bit hard with ASC off)

If I misspelled a word it's because I'm Norwegian, so bear with me.

  • its a five speed auto, car done 129000miles, the shifting is fine at all time, smooth even when reversing, can't really find a similarity in the 3 times it happened, which makes me more worried.............

  • Do the simple stuff first. Is the air filter(s) clean?
Remove the MAF(s) and using MAF or Brake cleaner spray the inside wires and element. Let dry and reinstall. Fixed the intermittent Trans Fail Safe error on my #2 car.

  • The engine management will sense a fault in the engine and put you in transmission failsafe to stop you thrashing it until fixed.

Hence, as I said earlier, fault can be engine or transmission.

  • For me it was alternator related

1/ took off alternator and had diode replaced (that was dead)
2/ Re-wired alternator to main bus line as old one was knacked

    fixed!

    Lets burn rubber!

  • doesn't seem to be the vac filter, thing is i'm using the car dayli and can't
afford not having it for a long time, should i take it to my local garage and direct them towards alternator or a leak, or should i go to the steadler?

the alert is now turning on every trip almost, and i feel somthing
loose under the center consol, there's a slight bang from there when
    i floor it...........

  • have been to the 'pro's' here in budapest, it's hard to understand their english but they say i had two problems, one is the gearbox and one the computer, they have done a reset and said that if it shouldn't do the work i should come back, fair to fair they have charged only 20 euros for a one and a half hour job............

    lets see

  • That diagnosis sounds like guesswork to me but it was cheap and if all the fault codes were reset, any recurrence will trigger a new code which when read, MAY help locate any faults.

As I said from the outset, this could be a long fault finding process. I definately think you need an experienced BMW specialist.

  • Find a garage with an inspection pit and stand under the car looking at the engine and transmission mounts while a driver moves the car forwards and backwards above the pit. The car only needs to be moved a metre or so.
If this shows nothing but you still believe you may have a broken mount you could try taking up the drive with the handbrake on or the wheels lightly chocked to stop the car from moving but please be very careful if you do it this way as this puts a lot of load into the suspension systems.
If you can't or don't trust the driver with the wheels chocked but still need to simulate `load` get the driver to lightly`tap` the throttle when he moves the car, just enough to make the car hop/jump a little (don't let him get carried away with it!).
What you're trying to do is load and release the drive train, this way if a mount has failed you will see (and probably hear it) straight away but make sure the driver knows what you're trying to see and what you will do to him if he `tries to help` any more than you've requested!
