• I have been lurking on these forums for the last 12 months after I decided to buy an 8, but unforseen circumstances put things on hold, however I am now looking to buy one over the next 3 months and any help and advice would be thoroughly appreciated.

  • Hi Deep, you've come to the right place and you should find a wealth of information here. As a first stopping point along the road to buying an 8, go to www.e31faq.com and check out the pre-purchase check list. With an 8, the usual used car buying rules apply of course - don't buy the first one you see unless you're with an expert that can check it properly for you. Get informed about all model variants, rarity, options etc and decide which version you'd like to have and then narror your search to that model (keeping an eye open for anything else that might come along). Have a look over on www.pistonheads.co.uk - there's usually a handful if 8s for sale but check on this forum if you see one there you like, chances are that the 8 will be known to someone here in the club. You also need to be sure about your budget, don't forget that the 8 was an expensive car when new and there's no getting away from the fact that it does have lots of whistles and bells that can and may very well go wrong at some point. Budget on having to sort the front suspension at some point unless its been done recently - not too difficult a job but you'll probably need to buy some bits and pieces. Having said that, properly sorted and maintained the 8 is a reliable machine. Parts are not extortionately expensive but you can shop around and find alternatives using this forum for guidance.
Probably the best advice is to get someone that knows 8s well to go with you to view any potential purchase.

Good luck with your search :winkwink:
    Cheers,
    Jason

  • Deep - yes welcome I am a new comere to this site and I have found it very usefull and informative Jason has it right just take your time when looking for the car.

Only thing I would add to Jason's comments are take a look arround your area and find a BMW specialist with all the right gear I have and I know everthing is done correctly on the car but most of all enjoy the 8

    Good luck with the adventure

    Steve :winkwink:
