  • Not impressed!

    Right guys/gals.

Got the car back last night after many phone calls (explain later). On arrival the garage was shut, and the car was clearly to be seen at the polish carwash place across the road (nice).

Finally a mechanic appeared and handed me the keys which were left in clear site on the office table, unmanned, side-door open to the public. (nice).

Got the car back and gave her a good wash/inspection and low and behold the passenger wing and passenger-side nose-cone have lacquer scratches – some deep – NOT F-ing HAPPY by this point. Opened up the engine bay and inspected all areas and oh...theres a shiny silver torque wrench extension bar sat in the windscreen wiper / lower windscreen enclosure. I then started looking harder...frown lines steadily increasing, and I notice a bright green handle sat right down in the duct which sits above the back of the engine....i was absolutely furious.

More-over the problem is still there after some trouble with the mechanics themselves... Ordering parts in against my specific wishes not too (extra coil packs..a whole new set of spark plugs (mine are only a few weeks old which they well know) both coils and sparks can easily be tested anyway!! Plus when I went in on Saturday, my engine cowel etc were lying on the floor and the lads had dropped two washers down into the spark plugs (one of which had to be broken to remove the washer)...god knows what wouldve happened if they hadnt noticed more dropping into the top of the block (cam covers were removed) plus my air filter was on the floor covered in oil and leaves etc – which luckily I checked when I got it back last night – still full of oil and debris!!!

Went back this morning and told them exactly what I found, and that I was not happy in the slightest. Luckily no money has passed their way. I may, or may not pay them for changing the cam gaskets...depending on the scratch situation...if I cant successfully remove them then it will go to the bodyshop.

  • ...tell me about it chap.

when confronted, the owner was so blazé about his garages workmanship and lack of care and pride in the job, and damage to my car i could have throttled him.

ive now found another specialist in nottingham to proceed with the solution to the problem. They have been recommended by friends and clients...recently stripped and rebuilt an M5 engine so they cant be bad!

£40 ph is pretty good value too.

  • car went into the NEW specialists yesterday...all together much slicker outfit and a handful of very expensive cars being worked on...garage floor nicely painted and tools in ....tool chests! :)

Today theyve diagnosed the fault as an intermittent failure on one of the lambda sensors causing the ECU to shut down the left bank. (think its left).

new sensor to be fitted tomorrow and the cats are being scrutinized also. :harhar:

    Thanks reinhard et al! :top::top::top::top::top:

  • I fear you´ve come to a place sizing your wallet again .... there is nothing such as a bank shutdown on a V8. M60 and M62 do indeed cut out single cylinders as reported in the ECU. I have never heard about a malfunctioning lambda probe provoking misfire, but I am also here to learn ;)
All they normally do is increase your petrol consumption once they age and/or fail.

I have a hunch that you will add those O2 sensor to your collection of items that may come handy in a distant future along with the coils...

Nevertheless - let them give it a try but negotiate the price of the replaced items and work once this does not cure the problem.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Reinhard

  • hi reinhard,

they have suggested a cat replacement as one is deffenately on its way out.

the engine doesnt misfire now when the exhaust is cold...when its hot it does misfire which they warned about.

So new cat is going on next tues.

  • me too chap...luckily i managed to knock off a couple of thou when i bought her 4-5 months back so im encroaching upon the original asking price now...

The car now feels totally different to what she was before so its nice to "feel" the difference through the handling and performance rather than just spending huge amounts on things that make little or no difference. :)

...next up is the centre resonator delete...just trying to find someone to mandrel the pipework.

thanks again reinhard et al with my original problem. :top:

  • Benji, one user in the German speaking part of the forum manufacturs centre resonator delete "X" Pipes. The user is Thomas Engl, he doesn't speak English though but if you're interested I can act as interpreter for you (I speak German). Here's a link to Thomas' website showing the range of items he manufacturs for the 8 series:
