The units can be repaired. If done professionally, it can extend the unit's life with many years. On German boards people have always been very satisfied with the pixel repair services provided by Guido (nickname M8-Enzo at ClubE31.de). Guido does not only fix board member's units, but he also performs official repairs for car manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, Opel,... In other words, Guido knows his stuff.
If you are brave and think you can handle this yourself, read:
• OBC pixel and button fix DIY...
• MID OBC pixel repair attempt (long, disappointing)One thing I must add; Guido does not fix units that have been "repaired" before. So if you mess up, Guido will probably not be able to help you. This may also apply to other repair services.

I had mine done at Guido's.
However, a look at ebay will give you tons of possibilities. -
I sent my MID to a german chap (via ebay) called Pixelarzt (translates as Pixel Doctor). The unit was fine for over a year but it's starting to fail again, I have 3 bands of pixels that don't always work but they do when the unit is warm, and the "check" button does not always work. I have another unit that I will send to Guido for repair - he has an excelent reputation and his repair is supposed to last for years.

How can I contact this Guido?
PS. I registered at clube31 but never got my account activated.
-
Fatandre: Not sure why you can't get access to clube31.de, but I've sent you a private message with Guido's email address. That way you can contact him directly.

Hi Revtor,
Just wondering if I could ask you to PM me Guido's e-mail address please?
I've tried to PM him but I'm not allowed access.
I wanted to send him a mail about getting my OBC repaired; some of the pixels are starting to fail.
Has anyone sent their OBC to him? If so, how did it go and was it expensive?
Thanks a mill guys and Revtor -
Private message sent!

I sent my unit it Guido (M8 Enzo) last week. He received it and fixed it on the day of receipt and has already sent it back! It should arrive today or tomorrow. Charge was EUR100 plus shipping for the E31 OBC. You dont pay till you are happy with the repair and he has never had a unit fail again (after years of use).
Ill post up an image here when I get it, but Im hoping it looks as new. So far, his service and communication exceed expectations, very very good.

Hey Mattsimis,
That's great to hear, thanks for the info. I'll be sending it from Ireland
myself so I'll mail Guido for address etc. Look forward to the pics, whenever you get a chance to post them up.
Be nice to have all the pixels working again - it's annoying when they start to disappear!
Hope you're getting things sorted on your own 850csi...
P.S. Is it difficult to remove the OBC? -

P.S. Is it difficult to remove the OBC?
Remove the radio and reach in the opening. The OBC/MID has one large retaining tab on its bottom. Push it upwards and at the same moment push the unit towards yourself. It should come out fairly easy. -
I used an ID Card (same size as credit card) to force the bottom clip down. Can use one on the top clip too (but the bottom clip is much tougher and bigger). Just remember its not actually screwed in, just clipped on top and bottom. Its also much shallower (not like a headunit) and lighter than you might think.
IRC, I took it out with the radio headunit still installed.

Hi Mattsimis,
Did you get the OBC back at this stage?
I was in touch with Guido - great communication. I'm going to remove the OBC and send it over to him so hopefully that should get all he pixles back
in the game!
From reading Guido's guide to fixing it, he mentions that once removed, if the car is driven in the mean time, when fitted again, it needs to be re-programmed. Anyone with any experience of this? Does it need to be re-programmed or have I picked it up incorrectly?
Thanks as always -
No reprogramming required apart from date and time,
Cheers

Not yet, hopefully tomorrow!
Guidos communication is great and his voluminous service overview very impressive, though I too noticed some of the terms used were a bit too literal and absolute, but such is German - English translations in general! -
Finally got it off DHL!
Looks great, all pixels working and he even supplied 4 new bulbs as backups!
-
Ah, very nice indeed! Looks great.
Right, I'll be sending my off to Guido next week so!
Thanks for the update mattsimis............

Quick question - how to you get the OBC to show up everything, as in
the photo? (i.e. oil service, inspection, the < > signs, etc). Does
that just happen when you put it back in again?
Cheers -
hi, guido's address needed here too please.............

Press and hold 100 and 10 (the 2 buttons on left) to put it into Service Mode. Then press Button 1 to select test 1 then press SET/RES to "run" the test. It should run the test as shown where all pixels light up.Zitat von ziggystardust;68700hi, guido's address needed here too please.............
Im not sure why we keep being so secretive and only PMing this to each other, I just did a Google for "M8-Enzo" and found about 10 forums with his email already posted. Considered this is a "closed" forum, its even safer to post email addresses on than the many the public forums its already on.
M8-Enzo@freenet.de is the email, he also trades as "Pixeldoktor M8 ENZO" -
