need deep pockets when you have an 8

  • looks like I will have one of those major repair costs on my 8 now.
My auto gearbox is in a very bad state at the moment, and I planned to take the spare one I have and have it rebuilt, and then simply do a swap.
I have been in contact with a company that are specialists in auto gearboxes.
at 3200 euros they will completely rebuild my gearbox to as-new state and give me a 2 year warranty.
an extra ~1700 euros for the swap, fluids, flushing oil cooler system in the car and bench testing the gearbox.
    making the total 4900 euros.

At the same time I will have the rear engine seal ring and the oil sump seals replaced. parts cost is about 150 euros, plus the work to have it done, I expect another 400 euros there.

That should bring my total up to ~5500 euros, though I will have a car that does not leak, and won't leak for many years to come, and my gearbox will be as when it came from the factory and should not give me any pain for the next 10-20 years.

Guess I'll just have to dig deep and forget about it and just enjoy the car when it is done.

  • Holy crap Noggie,
    it puts some perspective.
I was driving earlier and (as I often do) wondering about E31 priorities - ..some things (cosmetic) can feel like a vanity, for example since seeing an 8 last night that was in superb condition visually, my resolve to bite the bullet and spend some extra money making my cars bodywork better had increased.
But then the sensible voice telling me - 'don't do it if its just a vanity' - and the same voice warns me - you don't know when that awkward larger bill could materialise.
I still haven't figured out how i want to progress with this car - its a car 'worth' lashing cash on seemingly - but am I really that fussed if its not perfect?
Your story is a timely reminder that once you love these cars, even a massive bill would somehow be dealt with rather than lose it.. but you need deep pockets for sure. Thanks for the post

  • Since my 8 is pretty much on my "never ever sell" list, I don't mind spending money on it, being for sensible repairs, or my own joy.
My list of mods on this car is quite long, and I have put more money into it than what I paid for it already.
I did expect a cost on my gearbox, but not quite this big.

Given that I drive the car very little, about 8000km a year, and this repair will ensure no trouble for the next 100.000+km, it should mean that I will have nothing to worry about for at least 15 years.

If one just plan to have an 8 for a few years then this kind of thing can really ruin your day.
For me it's more of a life long commitment, so even though it is a huge cost, I also see the future benefit of this repair.

  • Sorry for my late reply, did not see this before now.

Current issue is very rough shifts, especially at low RPM between 1. and 2., it leaks from the rear seal, and for an unknown time it has been driven with far to little oil (due to the leak).
Two years ago I filled almost 1 liter to get it to the minimum mark.

I'm doing this because it is not performing as it should, and the unknown damage the low oil has caused it.

I could have done a simple flush and filters, but there is no guarantee that it would have made a huge difference, by doing this I have a gearbox that performs as new.

I had similar symptoms and decided to go the "flush, filter, refill" route first. The difference was impressive. My gearbox is like it should be since then. Looking at the cost of a total rebuild you may want to consider this "test". In worst case you've wasted some money but chances are good that it cures your issues.

I did think about this, the flush job is about 800 euros, the gearbox also leaks from the rear seal. and there is no guarantee it will be ok, and I need to do my engine oil sump seals as well.

With this rebuild the gearbox will be 100% I will change the rear engine seal, and the oil sump seals.
it will cost quite a bit, but it will give me peace of mind for years to come.

  • 800 EUR for a gearbox flush? Not even BMW charged me that during Inspection II..

That said, it's expensive. I'm looking at 26k NOK (3400 EUR) just in front shocks, and another 2000 EUR in "misc" to keep her in perfect condition. This includes a new front bumper (several mounts broken, old plastic, and paint peeling), and some engine work. (It shakes between 1400 and 2000 when cold. I also have the reputable ticking noise, and very uneven idle when cold, but fine when warm. Gasket? Any ideas?)

I have a complete Bilstein ready to mount sport suspension lying (front and rear) only run approximately 1500 km, including new standard coil spring, protection plate and wheel hub :driver: - if interested I think we should be able to find a reasonable price – and you will save a whole lot to complete the rest on the to do list ;)

  • Think fast Adrian, because both of you are going to Sweden tomorrow.

As for my gearbox, they told me it was "very worn", a flush would not have done much good, and it has also been upgraded significantly as well, should last for many, many years to come.

  • I'm already in the process of putting in new EDC shocks, but thanks! I'm sure someone else will enjoy them :D
