My 8er. Pop video.

  • Hi guys
Finally seen the video my car was used for a few weeks ago..

Please don't think I'm endorsing the message of the film/ song which seems to be: "Kids have more fun if they steal alcohol, throw up, do class A drugs and steal cars".

Prior to filming I knew the subject matter was somewhat subversive but I wasn't sent a script & i'm not involved in the creative process at all!!

Enjoyed the filming immensely but the video is a bit E31-light if you want my honest thoughts

  • PS: That is SHERBET (a confectionary..) not NW London pub-sourced Ajax.

What a peculiarly English video.. i'm not sure to be pleased or give up on humankind and torch the car in case any local kids get ideas.

Little urchins. They didn't vom in it did they? Were you driving it Burn?

No.. they had my blessing..little tykes.. so precocious these days kids.
They hotwired it themselves, drove it away and when I got it back the next day.. lets just say there was..um..paraphernalia everywhere that got me a litle worried :roll: until I comforted myself by remembering - they are over 10 yrs old.

    Lookin' good...

    Now I know how to hot-wire an E31! :)

 Car looks good but man I don't want my kids to see that clip.

And unfortunately as they were there when we filmed.. its proving almost impossible stopping them. Currently in both the kids doghouse.

  • This is the last post I'll make on this thread because its trivial as hell and other threads worth far more.
Just wanna say, after my third viewing of this video i'm kind of wanting not to be associated with it.
I'm not a prude at all. But i think what starts as quite a nice concept (and certainly the part when I/ our 8er was present) turns ugly, i can't think of a more factual way to describe it.
Its one thing taking a very light hearted view to 'children doing anarchy' which i think is fine, but the themes are graphic, bear a resemblance to real life only inasmuch as some sad idiots do live a life that vaguely resembles that, but even the mild stuff like flicking v-signs, when added to the overall package, makes me mildly depressed (on a day when i'm happy for other reasons).

They should have stuck to v-signs and metaphorically stealing cars..
i don't kid when i say, the way it was pitched at me was that the stealing of the car, indeed the whole 'kids' bit was a kind of metaphor.
Is metaphor just some word these people use to sucker people in?

My car is too wholesome to be sullied this way and I'm out, after drafting a stinging rebuke email to the producers, who i think have translated this all a bit too literally. They're only about 18 themselves.

Life in the UK isn't really this grim i hasten to add.

Worst thing of all, i can't even show it to my kids (not for a year or 3 anyway) and they don't like me for it.

    Super hero, my arse.

If anyone has some more general sociological or other obsrvations they want to discuss here thats fine, i'd prefer this thread to disappear in a way asap, but i have made a more serious point now, so in a way, i'm fine if people want to engage with that topic.

But bloody hell thats not E31-appropriate IMVHO.

Lets keep stuff like that firmly closed behind our front doors *cough* just kidding.

  • Hmmm, actually I don't mind the music, not too bad at all. The video is a little disturbing at the first viewing but then, if you start to think about what children regard as being grown up (smoking, drinking, etc) it actually sort of makes sense. Thumbs up to a certain extent I'd say, not bad.

What happened to your first line of post (7)
I bet ,I can keep this thread going for a month.:devilchilli:
    That is 1 bad vid.

but not as bad as the 1 of my car

You're right there Dave, the one of your car is just strange with an even stranger bloke doing the narration "two shotties" etc...

Thanks for comment about the car.
I can 10,000% firmly confirm, there was no real smoking (the parents were standing alongside during every minute of filming) no real hotwiring, no real driving, etc etc. I'm disturbed by how it looks myself but real smoking or drinking or throwing up, no.

  • As a media-student i can tell you that this is really good. You shouldn't be ashamed at all. What you are feeling is the sensation of something getting to you (can't find a punchier english translation), this is what every videographer and storyteller is looking for. Props to the guys, and on top if that the music was actually really good! A nice story as well. After all, it had a nice 70s-feel to it.

EDIT: Also, nice car! And a nice presentation. People love this stuff.

    I really appreciate this message.
But obviously, as Dave Koenig accurately predicted, i am unable to keep away from this thread! :banghead:

When i articulated my 'disappointment' at the subject matter in that long post previously, there was an element of humour within - although i did feel they took the concept to an extreme. I wrote that post laconically, and comments like 'my car should not be besmirched this way' were made tongue-in-cheek to some extent.

But your points are valid, and anyway, this film was made by an 18 year old kid and if he, and the artists, determine whichever theme they like, its no reflection on me obviously!

Artistic decisions are important but aren't relevant - and shouldn't affect - my own view of this process, or the end product. I love seeing my car - though its so brief - its the redeeming feature for me obviously.

I think they took it too far myself, in particular with showing a kid smoke (it wasn't real smoking) or 2 kids standing by a toilet consuming sherbet. However, i agree as a whole the film has validity.. and your more general points are not only valid, but welcome because i think i slightly over-cooked my objections. The film may not be to my taste, but i care not in truth.
Thanks again, and Dave - i'm withdrawing my promise not to add to this thread.
Its still very trivial, but then, we have many threads here that are sometimes trivial, i hope its not irritating folks on here too much discussing it.

  • I also think the actual song is decent, though the lead female vocalists voice is a bit scratchy for my complete liking.
And after all the song is probably the only thing that matters even slightly.

  • I like the story as well. It showcases a lifestyle and environment every kid thinks they want, but when they grow up they realize they don't.
