Repair MID with dead pixels?

  • Waiting for BMW UK...

I've now been to the local dealer for the inspection and the goodwill request has been submitted to BMW. Will post the outcome in due course. In the meantime, as a possible fallback, I've found clusterrepairsuk.co.uk in Norfolk who say they'll do it for £80 with a three year warranty. Has anyone used this company?

  • Hi Sprucegoose (AKA The Aviator / Howard Hughes?)
GBP 80 sounds not too bad. The guy in Germany (Pixelarzt) does pretty good work, I bought a replacement MID from him a couple of months ago and it works as new.
It pays to shop around though, there's a few people offering to fix the pixel problem.

    Cheers,
    Jason

  • HI SG, I did remove mine myself, as User2883 explains, the easiest way is to remove the radio and then get your fingers behind the MID unit and push and wiggle it.
You don't need to disconnect the radio, place a cloth under it to stop it scratching the console (if you have a wood veneer one) and let it hang down - if you disconnect it you will have to re-enter the security code.

Be careful, the top of the MID has plastic bits that engage with the DIN slot that it fits into - I used a couple of old plastic cards (credit cards but without the embossed numbers as these would have damaged the wood veneer fitted in my car) to depress the clips so I could slide the unit out. It's a bit fiddly but it works, just go nice and slowly to avoid breaking anything, the BMW plastic gets brittle with age and bits snap off.
One of tip, you will have to remove the cable from the back of the MID, this is easy when you know how, there's a lever that you have to pull up - look for a minature handbrake lever :)

Good luck - your current MID looks better than mine did before repair and it means that you can play "guess the warning message" when you're driving around. Having a nice new /guaranteed unit is great.
    :D

  • One other observation looking at your MID SG, the button arrangement is reversed compared with my unit. I have a German language unit (I'm in Switzerland) and the control buttons are reversed left to right (digit input and clock are the same though)- I guess that's the mirror image version for RHD cars? Anyone know about this?

  • Thanks

Guys, thanks a lot for those tips. Will post more when I hear from BMW.

  • I've found a guy down here in Australia that says he can repair the pixel problems also. I’m going to shoot my unit off to him probably next week. I have no idea how long this repair will last, he's asking $250AU. I figure this isn’t all that bad depending on how long it lasts......the stealers here are asking $2235 for an original from them.

I'll post some before and after pics soon.

  • Steve,
I would be interested in this as the radio in my 8 shows no pixels and the Instrument Cluster in my X5 has sporadic missing pixels.

  • Arnie, Sometimes there are more pixels visible, so you get part of the station details - just the same as the OBC (MID) unit.

  • Is your radio the BMW professional unit, which displays the station abbreviations above each preset button?

The display on this is back-lit by 4 or 5 bulbs and the contact on the bulbs can become intermittent, so that some sections become brighter than others and can flicker.

However, if the display shows individual lines of pixels disappear, with those adjacent, fully diplayed, then you have pixel problems, but I've never yet seen it happen on a radio.

I came across this website too.

Yes, I'd heard about these people before and I think they've been around for quite a while to know what they are doing. Also, applies to BBA Reman, but I think the later specialise in ECU and things like ABS valves, rather than instruments and displays.

  • Try this?

    Hello all,

I repaired mine about 2 years ago with no problems since by replacing (white) the foam tape pressure strip across the ribbon with several layers of new foam tape, to a thickness slightly greater than the original, carefully trimmed to width.
I also did this for another fellow on here with good results though I do not know how his OBD has faired since.

Worth a try if you are that way inclined.
