bit of advice please

  • ok i have been offered a 1993 850ci, the original owner of this car emigrated to new zealand just over 6 years ago, and since then its been parked outside he's parents, they have got sick of it being parked there so have offered it me first, the car has been started regulary and been taken for very very short drives, i had to jump start it today and it started straight away, the engine sounds absolutly mint with no knocks/rattles or anything.

obviously being stood there for so long it needs a damn good clean, its a one owner with full service history until it was left in the uk, its a 6 speed manual with approx 120k, i will get some better pics and a vid on friday, and the bonnets fine i just forgot to close it while it was running.

i dont wanna take the p with my offer so whats a reasonable price for it as it sits??

    cheers

    karl

  • I'd have to disagree with you there Steve, 6spd manuals are pretty rare and this sounds like a nice one. If these cars are not worth closer to £10K we will see more and more decent cars being broken like the ' Ebay' thread recently. Why is everyone putting such low values on these cars?
Without wishing to offend anyone, £5k is banger money these days

I know where you' re coming from dude but seriously , would you really want tp pay top$ on a car that has had little or NO maintenance in the last 6 yrs:top::hmmmm:

Fair comment Steve, but it has full history and one owner, it can't be that bad. In really good shape this could be worth well over £10K.

Karl, you obviously want to do the right thing and to be fair to these people, might I suggest having an independant give it the once over and then you could make an appropriate and informed offer:dontknow:

  • As a 6-Speed then it should be worth around £10k but then start deducting value in relation to anything that you find wrong with it.

I would ask for a new MOT with it and that may well pick up any obvious nasties. Then get an independant to check it over or get a main dealer oil service and you can be assured they will rip it apart looking for work on it. Pay your oil service bill, take it away and then independantly check their scathing report.

  • Well, it could be a minefield....
Corrosion is the biggest problem along with degradation of rubber i.e. fuel lines. With the car not being run for any length of time nothing gets any heat to dry up the moisture. Brake lines could be a problem along with oil seals around the diff and propshaft. Brake pistons might not operate at 100%....

On the very good side, it is a six speed in a lovely colour with the right colour interior.... Nice wheels as well.....

Price wise I would give 7-8k dependant on all of the above being in order.

Some spit and polish and get the engine bay sparkling and it would be a 10k car. What lets it down is the mileage for top book price....

    I would!! Nuff said. ;)

  • The fact it's only had one owner and you know them should make the car very tempting. Lots of bad things can happen to a car in 17 years but you know what has and hasn't happened to this one which is a real bonus. I recently bought a 100k miles, 10 year Alfa 146 which on paper should have the men in white coats dragging me off. But I bought it from someone i knew who'd had it from new. 2 months in, it hasn't missed a beat (I've jinxed it now...).

If it were me I'd offer them £6k with no MoT and no hard feelings if you find anything bad. I'd bet it'll take at least £2k to bring it up to snuff in which case you've both got a reasonable deal.

  • A chap up the road has just bought a 96 840 in Estoril 95000 miles full history, for £3k. Prob needs £1000.00 spent on wheels and a bit of paint, but lovely car. I think that 850 looks about £4k max.

Agreed. I'd go £3.5 - 4k for a 'quick sale' as it has no MOT and as such is a bit of a gamble.

  • I guess like any 8 on the marked it has the potential to be a money pit. Even well maintained cars can result in big reapair bills. As Gerry said get it checked out by a pro if you are in any doubt manual box or not. Unless they are giving it away:grin2:

:driving2:Its been a year since I sold her and I still miss her.......

  • Why do we all get shocked when someone wants to make £10K breaking a perfectly good 8 and then only value them as runners at sub £5K. Am I missing something:hmmmm:

If these cars really are as worthless as all these comments make out then the only future for them is in bits. Until such time as people start paying decent money for them they will never become classics, just old nudgers.

I am finding this thread very disillusioning:?

  • Nifty I know what you mean, I guess the issue will always be how much will someone pay. I think I speak for everyone when I say we all think the cars are worth more than the forecourt label. Its just economics people without a clue will just think 20 years old its must be only worth a few hundred pounds. I guess in time things may change just look how much a mark 1 ford escort goes for these days!

  • Hi Graham - the horrible truth is that an early 850 auto with "experience" such as mine is worth £3k-£5k depending on condition. Yours is a different kettle of fish as it's mint. I think it will be a few years yet before they're worth much more. All these nice cars dying for parts can only speed up that process. It's horrible to see, but the fewer cars that exist the sooner ours will be worth something.

  • ok cheers for all the comments guys, like i said i will be looking at the car again on friday, this time i'm going to view it with my head and not my heart as it looks stunning in that colour:)

i can have the car for 4k, and that is after i have taken it for an MOT, and BMW so if it fails in great style i can walk away or offer him less for it and try to sort out any potental issues??

i had a phone call today to tell me that it had a new clutch fitted at BMW 2k before it went into storage so thats good to know, and it had been running today and started under its own steam very easily after i lent the guys dad one of my batteries.

so if its all good i may be the owner of a manual 850ci, Mmmm what will i do with my 2001 540i sport as i cant afford to run both:hmmmm:

  • Break it and use the money to keep the 850 on the road:laugh:
