After much deliberation, net searches, trips to Halfords etc, I have finally decided on the two headunits listed below.
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-cde-9880r.html
http://www.clarionworld.co.uk/…io.aspx/cz501er-car-radio
Ideally I wanted something that would not stand out or be too bling bling, the Beckers/Nakamichis would be ideal in terms of appearance but did not have USB connectivity.
So I have narrowed it down to the above 2 units, not ideal but acceptable for the price I think.
They would also allow me to connect my HTC mobile and use it as a sat nav.
I also looked at the Beat 550 - DVD player with 3.5 in touch screen, but it has blue illumination which was the only drawback (damn!).
I am interested to hear what others think, good and bad points and possible alternatives, will there be any problems with installation?
Thanks.
Just found another:

The Kenwood allows various different colours so this may be an option?!
Thoughts Please.

The Kenwood one looks like a winner to me - especially when set for a red backlight effect

Go for the Alpine. I have an CDE-9882Ri and this is a very good Radio, no blinking display things, easy to use and a good sound.
Compatible with iPod/iPhone and also USB. USB cable is on the back which was a must for me. I do not want to have a USB-Stik in the front.
The 9880 can be changed Green/Amber, my 9882Ri has also red. -
The Kenwood looks the least "blingy" and therefore more suitable for the car, in my opinion, and the options are very comprehensive.

I like the look of the kenwood out of the three

as far as looks go the kenwood is way up there! looks really classy and fits the 8!

The only thing I would say is the colour of the lighting on the units as BMW orange is hard to match, If you want a dash looking the same colour wise that is - I seem to remember Tall Tony going through this when he put the Laptop in his 840, the post is in here somewhere !?
Both units look good though hard to decide -
I'm currently checking this one out: http://www.pioneerelectronics.…DVD-Receivers/AVH-P6300BT
Screen closed it's the cleanest look i have been able to find.

That looks very good Adrian, I looked at a few double din/motorised units but did not like the fact that the onboard computer display was covered when the screen came out, hence I chose single din units.
Thanks for the feedback
I have decided to go with the Kenwood, although may not get time to install it for a few weeks. -
Wouldn't it be possible to put the AC controls in the middle, and headunit down? Then you would have it both ways
-
Thanks, I agree, but I wanted something that would be quick and easy and still look as 'original' as possible, besides I think changing the stereo will be enough of a challenge for me!
