[/COLOR]Janne? by any chance, his look Ok but he told me he & a mate welded them in & the heat distorted the Bonnet,.

With modern adhesives and non-shrink fillers I'm sure you can avoid welding on what is a non-structural component.

  • ENGL vents were 600 euro a pair.I will not pay that!

    Yes the very one.
I had a look at his bonnet and to me it looked like (and I belive he also said) it was simply cut with a very small angle grinder (maybe a dremmel type tool), when I saw his bonnet back in 2010.
I't looked ok, but the vents are much wider that the Alpina ones.

It certainly depends on the point of view and what "labour" is worth to one.
Thomas (Engl) cuts & welds them from plain stainless steel sheets - 10 hrs a piece until it is ready to be sold. So, what is your hourly rate to match that price? ;)

Cutting the hood and welding them in certainly is job for those knowing what they´re doing. There is no 2nd attempt

If I´d be in the market for one of those I´d probably go for the "ready-to-use" one that Thomas was offering for around 2k EUR painted as per request.
As of late he was using factory fresh hoods for that job - not sure how this will work out in the future when supplies at Alpina have dwindled away. A new hood ex-factory wil set you back 860 EUR unpainted these days.

Of course there is that CF-project in the US. It looks nice judging from the pictures. The price quoted was nothing less than astonishing but so far none has materialized and there is possibly more to it...
A German tuner called G-Power once offered CF hoods for more or less acceptable money (methinks 4.5K EUR or DEM can´t quite remember) - those were nice to look at only the fit was from a 1950´s Fiat. You´d have to sit on one edge to keep it shut

Apart from Thomas Engl, Alpina is the only current real world supplier of such a hood - theirs cannot really be had though and the tag last was 12k or so, which in any European currency is a LOT.

He also has NACA, NANA and NASA ducts for sale... ;)

    Cheers
    Reinhard

PS: not affiliated but I know what kind of workmanship he stands for and am not afraid of advertising any of his pieces of art.

  • I have no doubt Tomas Engl's work is first class. Jason has them fitted to his M73 and I am sure he would have posted negative or positive comments on here.:poke:(he made negative remarks about my baby. BIG BIRD)
I am a time served welder in the heavy plant industry.
fitting the vents is not beond my abilities. I also have as friend who is a panel basher/ painter.

  • The wings your KS8 already has isn't enough? :p

No disrespect, just joking. I love the KS8, would trade my 8e for a LHD one any day.

You're still holding that against me? (just joking ;) )
I can certainly vouch for Thomas' work, both on the bonnet and his exhaust system that I also have (Engl 110), the workmanship is fine quality, good even welds throughout. There is only one very slight flaw on the bonnet and you have to look hard to see it. The price isn't cheap but quality and proper workmanship never are.

The US one is fiberglass, not carbon fiber, and price was 1300USD I believe, plus shipping and paint.

Alpina... I tried.... unless you actually have a B12 5.7 they wont sell you one.

I just ordered a front section, and X-pipe from him, so soon I will be able to comment on the quality too.
Might end up with a strut bar, and possibly some rear silencers, but I will try with my stock ones first.
I have thought about a Alpina hood too.

  • Always meant to ask, but was scared of appearing (even more) ignorant - but hey - here goes .........
On the Alpina bonnet I absolutely get and like the louvres on each side, but what's the deal with the curvy triangular scoop thing in the middle :hmmmm:

It's to allow cooler air to enter to cool the fuel rail - cold = more dense = more air = bigger bang, that's the theory anyway. The NACA duct meets up with a hole in the acoustic hood to allow air to flow over the fuel rails. The NACA duct on my Engl hood is functional as I aslo bought an Engl acoustic hood which has a hole cut into it, similar to the alpina version.

  • Thanks :)
To get a bigger bang would mean more fuel and air molecules per cm3 of "inductant" (no good just increasing one reactant) and increasing the fuel injection volume is easy enough to do anyway.
Recon there is a useful function though - extra dense fuel would allow for more air to be squeezed in (a little anyway).
Given what you've described I recon it might be to cool the fuel rails to prevent boiling in the extra heat from the extra power?
Squirting vapour as opposed to liquid would reduce the molecule count and available reactant and power a lot :hmmmm:
