Carbon Fiber Parts

//M Turbo, Where did you find those pics?

As for the euro taillights, I actually was thinking if some company can make a set of newer style lenses for the 8, like the 2002+ 5 series, that would be a classy touch to enhance and make the 8 a modern accent.

Steve - the price for the hood would be about $1500 USD. Not sure on the shipping though.

    Cheers,

  • You guys interested in the Hood :) I feel i must point out to you if you have not already noticed, look at the vents ,you will see that left & right are slightly different[so much for the carbon mans expertise] this is why its not on my car :? .
I do intend putting it on eBay soon but i'd prefere all e31 members are made aware of the slight issue rather than take the money & face a barrage of compliants :)

  • I quite like the idea of making the parts with a bit more flair and distinction. The hood with no light cutouts is the most interesting in that the extra weight (do not know exactly how much) of the headlight units and mechanical complexity could be eliminated.

The hood would need to be without the steel frame (such as the Alpina hood, I believe). Would the NASA scoop need to remain?

I have read that the Dinan TT with the carbon fiber only weighed about 3100 lbs. Curious what all was changed or removed.

Oh holy hell!! Are these lights still available or in production? Who produced them? Have they (or anyone else) made tail lights with clear indicators, and reverse lights with red running and brake lights? I have been told by many that no one has ever done this. WOW!

  • If someone has the clear/red tail lights you may be able to cut out the running light back section and add in cannibalized Celis lights from an e39's. You would then have to figure out how to re-wire them to work with the e31. If you had the patience and time it could be done.

    Steve,

Can't really make out the difference between the vents from the picture. Can you explain or highlight them please? Also, where did you get your current hood?

  • Here you go bud.

The hood was fabricated somewhere near St Louis in the good old US ofA,I was required to pay the full amoun of money upfront due to the high cost of getting this project off the ground :!:
I was assured of the expertise & competance of this small specialist company  by the British agent for the transaction, thats the background ,heres the other pics when fitted, at present its securley fixed to my garage ceiling :D
Appologies once more for the size of picture buit in this case it may be more helpfull than annoying

  • Great pic. Thank you kind sir. It seems that the last 2 gills of the left side is longer or offset. I wonder where in St. Louis the hood is made. Me being in the USA it may be cost effective and a big savings on shipping to have it locally done for me.

I really want an Alpina Style hood and more within a $2000 budget.

  • Steve,

I know you're trying to get rid of your hood, but do you know if the company that made yours is still willing to make more, (possibly if they will also fix the vent alignment) and for how much for local U.S. residents?

If there's a company that is already making this Alpina style hood, then it may be redundant for me to have them made.

As I've mentioned before, we could possibly make the vents more like the ones featured on the vorsteiner site.

Can I get at least 8 people to commit if we can get the hoods done for $1200 or less?

    Regards,

I second that. ///M Turbo, do you have more info on the manufacturer of those clear tail lights?

    Thanks,

  • I think the best starting point would be the Alpina Hood, as this is what most people have put at the top of their lists. However, I would want one to look as close as possible to the original. I've seen other replicas with the louvres too small or too big or at different angles and to me they don't look right. The original Alpina B12 hood/bonnet is a carbon-fibre skin placed over the original steel U-channel support frame and is probably no lighter, if not heavier, than the all-steel factory bonnet. Therefore, an all-fibre hood would be an improvement and not necessarily infringe any copyrights. Also, one needs to bear in mind that there are some reports of paint problems with the original Alpina hoods due to the carbon-fibre delaminating with high temperatures from the engine. A UK company is providing all carbon-fibre replicas for around GBP £2,000, but as I mentioned the louvres don't look right to me.

  • John ,referance your question on US based C/f Company, I genuinely havn't a clue who they were,it was handled by an agent on my behalf :?

It is the setting up cost which are always going to be high for a small 10/15 units,1st they have to make a mould ,interior /exterior,then shape the vents holes etc, very specialised, obviously the guy who did mine bit off more than he could chew :D
