• Finally go round to transferring pictures from my phone today.

These are the 'during' pictures obviously. Bonnet + both sides wing > arch. Everywhere else buffed up to new. Once my Carnauba wax arrives I'll post 'after' ones :D

I'm very pleased with the result, and have a New Years Resolution only to ever wash with Microfibre cloths and polish with professional Wax.

  • Looking very smart Tony.
New improved interior, space age gismo's and now a shiny new exterior - you can tell bemused onlookers that it's the new Nine Series!
(Typed in the sure knowledge that you won't be one of those people who takes a fence and then won't be happy until I've given them the shed and the pergola as an apology).

Thought I'd put in a couple of pics of my wagen during its respray (whole car was done), so I know how tense it can be: hoping for a masterpiece, while fearing a total bodge!

First pic shows the car with most of the bits removed (sills and nose-cone all eventually came off, as well as all exterior trim, seals, mirrors, handles - looked a complete mess!).

Second shows the first of several primer coats, under coats, duffle coats, etc. I lost count of the times I was told "It's all in the preparation" .

But like you, when it's finished and sat there gleaming on the driveway I got that warm cosy glow (well it was June).
Just keep away from those gritter lorries that can't tell gravel from salt!!!

  • Boys. how much is a professional respray in the UK?
The reason why I ask is because there is a ferry to Newcastle from Stavanger 3-4 times a week.

A respray is on my to-do list, but over here a respray will set me back somewhere in between 3-5000£.
So I was wondering if it was worth the ferry ticket and have it done in the UK.

My other option is to have it done in Germany.
Have heard of people that have got a dirt cheap respray in Poland, but I'm not sure I want to go there with my 8.

  • cheers for comments guys :D

The reason it wasn't a full respray was that I'd had the sunroof replaced initially. The seal had perished and let water in, and a few rust bubbles had appeared. So, I buy a new panel+seal, then get the roof and panel sprayed to match. The finish was so good it put the rest of the bodywork to shame, and I didn't think it was that bad. The nose cone was replaced earlier this year, so this only left the bonnet/wings/doors/rear arches. I had the boot + rear bumper buffed and debadged to remove any surface imperfections.

So there you go. It's a slippery slope of expense once you decide to get things 'right':lol:

UKZero, I dont take fences or any other items of garden furniture, so no worries !! Maybe I should take a leave out of SteveP's book and put an Audi 'TT' badge there :lol:

Wayne about the paint protection thing. So far I have not seen another car with this fitted, so no sure how it would affect the paintwork appearance. My fear is that it will look like those screen protectors you can get for mobile phones, and end up looking shabby. I prefer the look of polished paint over polished plastic film, so need convincing it is a good idea, over occasionally getting the nose cone touched up :?:

Noggie, all up my spray job cost me around 750 plus cost of sunroof panel. I think that is pretty good for the panels I had done.

  • I got several quotes from £750 to £4000.

Part of the difficulty is comparing like for like as not everyone means the same thing when they say "respray".
To some it is a quick rub down with Scotchbrite, some masking and a blow over.
To others it is complete dismantling, lots of preparation - to bare metal and back in some cases, lots of expensive layers of paint with more preparation in between, followed by reassembly.

In my case, I knew the bodyshop owner and got a very good value deal, but even so, the paint alone came to more than the cheapest quote above.

The blow over was a quote from a back street in Leicester at £750, the average specialist bodyshop quote was just under £2000 and the all singing all dancing "better than original, sir, we prefer a diamond credit card sir" was £4000.

    This was in 2006.

  • 750 pounds..... I guess I can pay the ferry ticket and even have enough left for a fish'n chips.... :)

    As for paint protection.
    Check this out http://www.xpel.com/products/paint_protection_kits.asp

not a kit ready for the 8 yet, so you US boys have a job to do. (they need a car to make the patterns of)

3M also have a product video in top right corner.

Then you have Ditec if you hate to polish the car

When my car is resprayed I'm going to have it done with Ditec.

  • the reason for my respray is because it apparently have been resprayed once before... rather poorly, and I intend to fit all the CSI trim and remove the mobile phone antenna on my left rear wing.
I have groups of small white dots 0,5-1mm in diameter on my roof, my drivers door, the bonnet and nosecone.
Some are in hand shapes so I think someone have touched the car before the top clear coat was applied.

    My respray is as follows.
rubb the car down, new primer, base and top coat.
I do not need to repaint inside the doors and engine compartment.
We are talking a quick weld for the antenna hole, one or two small p-lot dings, new csi front rear and mirrios, and a "doors shut" respray.
some minor dissasembly i.e tail lamps, door handles and some trim.... but not a full strip down.

  • £750 f*****g Quid ,Hell that is Cheap  I have just agreed to have my bonnet & front spoiler on the Alpina redone for £700 +Vat :?

My Only reservations here would be that given the car has no wheels on,it appears to have been preped & painted in the same area  [dust in the air]etc.

But if the end result is good

Those who risk nothing, achieve nothing, become nothing.

  • I know I could have spent a lot more than I did, but, and this is the thing, the guys who did the respray for me are personal friends and I trust them with all my cars/vans. They set their business up more or less at exactly the same time as me 10 years ago, and are still nextdoor-but-one to me at work. They don't charge a huge hourly rate, but they are always busy and have a rolling contract with the local Ford/Mazda dealership for their bodywork jobs.

I did get quotes from elsewhere, purely for peace of mind that I'd be saving money waiting for an available slot to get the car done where I did ! I too found that others wanted to charge me in excess of £2000, with the average being about £1500 (for a full parts off respray). I live in the Grim North remember where everything is a lot cheaper :lol:

Now, to look at the garage isn't confidence inspiring, but I see the jobs they do, day in day out, and it was these examples that convinced me to give them my 8... oh yes, and one of the owners has '94 850i as well

My pics show the car post spraying, and ready for buffing, and also once buffed. Steve, it was of course prep'd well away from the spray booth, and at one point was the exclusive e31 colour of light grey primer down each side :D. (after having had pretty much all the original paint sanded off)

Cost wise I know I got a good deal, but then I do give / have given them loads of work in the last 10 years and so get the mates-rates quotes rather than the Joe-Public quote :lol:

Also remember that it wasn't a 'full respray'. The nose cone, spoiler, boot, bumper weren't done. I'm pretty sure the cost would have gone up to around £1100 or so if I had that done as well.

  • TT. do they want another job??
I'll pay 2000£ for a respray, no problem.
where in the 'grim north' do you live??

My only concern with driving in the UK is driving on the other side of the road than I'm used too.... in my own lhd car.

  • Hi Noggie,

you've no need to worry about the driving in the UK on the wrong side of the road in a LHD car - I made a trip to the UK last July/August in my LHD 850ci and had no problems. Doubtless many of the members on this forum here will be happy to support my view that:
UK roads are the finest in the world
UK Drivers are the most considerate, thoughfull, friendly drivers you could hope to meet anywhere
UK drivers happily part with extra tax money on the price of fuel as payment for the excellent road network

All right, enough sarcasm, UK driving is fine really, the motorways are pretty good - some are much better than the German BAB since they are often 3 lane.

I wouldn't worry about it mate - just be careful where you leave your 8 that's all.

    Cheers,
    Jason

(Up around TT's area it's particularly dodgy - people get ripped off with Credit Card fraud buying unneccessary accessories for their non-Hartge 8's I hear)

  • i am driving regularly with a uk car in hungary, you'll be fine noggie argonaut is right about uk drivers, definetly the best i have seen and i have been all around, our cars are also equipped with a switch for the lights to change the directions when driving on the other side of the
    road.................

  • Guys (with the resprays), some nice work. Well done :)

Interesting to me as I will be having some similar work done in next few months.

Summer 07 went to a local franchise bodyshop specialising (mostly) in repair/spraying of minor dings/scratches/scrapes.
Mine had the usual front end stonechips, a scrape under front spoiler, a dent in rear quarter, scratches on other rear panels, they reckoned the drivers door edge had been "pushed" inwards.
Described that with the car being silver, they would have to extend spray much beyond the affected areas to get a good colour match. So, the nosecone + 3-4 other panels.
    Quote - £400ish.
(saw some of their finished work in the car park, seemed pretty good).
This is for some filler work + blow-over spray (presumably).

Now planning to have new sunroof sprayed (rust on underside of old one) , roof is less than perfect finish, same for one of the headlight covers, rust-bubble developing on one rear wheelarch lip.
By the time get those done as well, whats the point of trying to spray-match odd panels - may as well get the whole car done ?

May go back to same place for a new quote for a full spray job.
Otherwise, anybody got any recommendations for sprayers/bodyshop in Norfolk, or within reasonable travelling distance ?
