Stolen modules.

  • Not sure if anyone can help with this problem, but whilst my car is off the road, I lent my new O2 sensors and my seat/mirror module under the drivers seat to a guy called (details removed as a courtesy to moderators who asked I remove them) who was having some intermittant electrical issues that we were having trouble narrowing down.

Clearly, they fixed his problem and I never saw him again. His car was collected by another E31 specialist in Crawley whom I had previously trusted and had helped regularly with cars before and he collected the car on the premise he had some other work to carry out on it to rectify work he had previously done.

I never heard from him again either.

Now I am reassembling my car as you can see from the posts, Peter Rice sold me a module from his Alpina CSi for an excellent price to help me out but now everything operates backwards.

I have seen this issue mentioned before but has anyone found a cure rather than buy a new module or rewire everything backwards?

  • schnitz850: I asked Gerry to remove the personal details. I hate frauds as much as anyone else, but I think you should be very careful with posting personal details online unless you are really certain about one's fraudulent intentions. It wouldn't be the first time someone's name is dragged through the mud over an unfortunate misunderstanding. In this case, the person in question is a member of this forum since 2006 and owner of three E31. I know that doesn't always mean very much, but some caution is warranted. Gerry wrote he never heard of him again, but what I missed in Gerry's post is whether or not he actually tried to contact him. Gerry said the car was collected by another E31 specialist. Maybe the person in question doesn't even know he's driving around with Gerry's modules...

Update: Gerry convinced me (see post below), but I was advised against making the personal details public again - sorry. Apparently privacy laws also protect those who may not deserve it...

  • Yes, I contacted him a few more times but I was unwell at that time and was unable to continually follow up on it. Eventually he would not respond to my calls or emails. I know for a fact that its not the first time he has collected a car promising to pay after he has tested the car and he is now looking for another specialist to look at his issues as he has tucked-up the 2 best known E31 indies already and run out of suckers.

However, I am now fit again.

He clearly cannot use a dealer as there is no way he would get away with the vehicle without paying.

He is perfectly aware he is driving around with my modules and didnt pay either for the 32 hours work we spent on the car. He just thinks he has shafted someone again.

3 e31's is dooable when your maintenance and major repairs are free.

Heres what we did, Oh yes, I also forgot the coil he nicked too....

Investigate engine surge, failure of ECU to give any communication.
Access fault memory. Diagnostic equipment unable to communicate with ECU. Check cause of OBD pin 15 fault. Trace wire to locate fault incl R+I dashboard. Retest with alternative diagnostics equipment, still faulty. Arcing found around n/s coil assy, weld broken bracket and replace coil. Remove all control units, disconnect DME’s and EML in attempt to diagnose which control unit was causing fault. Swap control units with Phoenix’s own modules to test. Locate fault at OBM, disconnect plugs and access fault code memory. Faults shown, cleared and reoccurred with mixture control and Lambda probes. Replace control module and lambda probes. Trace R&D lines to KBM to control units. Trace fault to o/s seat module. Refit original control module and replace seat module. Test system, all diagnostics now functional. Refit all removed trims/seat etc.

Anyone wanna price THAT up at a dealers or know any Indies that can do that or would even entertain the job? I'm sure we have a couple of E31 owners here who can attest to the fact we dont give up on a fault?

  • I believe that confirms it;-) Now lets nail the bugger:top:

  • I've said it before, but it's worth mentioning again. Although it's a couple of hours journey for me to Gerry's place (I know I'm not the furthest), I'd use him again without hesitation. He did all of my springs and suspension, no hassle, excellent work and a true gent :)

  • Hi, Gerry,

Been away for a while and just catching up on new posts. Very sorry to here of your dilema.

If you have any details of this person, you should file a small-claims case against him in the local county court. I think it's very simple to do. If he doesn't turn-up or pay after that, he'll end up with with lots of credit problems in future (if he doesn't already have some).

However, you might need his address or perhaps the registration details of his car.
