8 Series in Top Gear Challenge?!

  • That's the exact point, Top Gear, many years ago was in fact a serious car review program - in the days of the likes of Chris Goffey, Angela Rippon (yes - Angela Rippon - the one with the legs!) and William Woolard. It was drastically restructured and became an entertainment program with occasional references to cars. The challenges should not be taken too seriously. They have done numerous challenges before including buying a supercar for under 10,000 pounds and inventing ridiculous challenges for the cars to overcome. Whilst they are certainly entertaining, if you were hoping for a serious review of the car you'd be disappointed.
The outcome of this particular challenge is obvious - whilst both the BMW and the Mercedes are interesting cars, far more so than the POS Nissan or whatever euro/jap/korean boringmobile they've chosen, they will never be able to compete in terms of reliability nor economy.

Just in case you're wondering about Angela Rippon:

edited to add gratuitous picture of Angela Rippon :winkwink:

I just sent them an email via the Top Gear website. "top.gear@bbc.co.uk"

I will let you know what they say if anything:cool:[/email]

I doubt if they will ever respond, I have never known it yet.

As Revtor just pointed out Top Gear is not concerned with doing proper reviews it is only entertainment (matter of opinion) and if they think we care, they will probably make great play on it and belittle the e31 followers on air. Personally, I don't think we should give the ignorant fools the satisfaction. I watched this series simply to see the e31, other than that I just cannot be bothered to listen to the puerile trio.

    Cheers

Good point, they did exactly that with the Morris Marina Owners Club after said club complained about the televised destruction of one of those fabulous icons of British motor manufacturing. err.....

  • Blast! I've got my Sister over from Australia and she's asleep in the sitting room (where the telly is) - I think I might just creep in there and play the Top Gear recording and see if she wakes up.........

I'm sure that there can't be much difference in price between the Merc and 850ci ignition coils, and the same could have been 'true' for us - so, we are not out of the trees yet!

A single M70 ignition coil costs approximately 95 euro in Germany (including taxes but not installed).

The M70 / M73 coils are simple devices, which provide power through the distributor cap. Those on the merc are more like the M60/M62 coils- individual coil-packs- but on this merc engine, there are twin coils with two spark-plugs per cylinder. But, still, at GBP 1200, they must have changed the whole lot. :)

  • After deliberately staying away from this thred (fear of spoiling the show) I have just seen a downloaded version of the show, and I must say, things was much better than expected.

The 850 should hold up just fine, in my 5 years of ownership I have spent huge amounts of money on my car, but that is because I like to improve on it, modify/personolize and bring it back to prime condition.

If I look back, the only things that HAD to be replaced on my car has been 2 bushings in the rear, the front control arms and trailing arms with bushings, and I currently have a busted right front wheelbearing.
and that is not bad at all.

All the other stuff I have done were in no way needed to keep the car going or pass the MOT, I just did it for my own sake.

So in respect to reliability I'm not worried.... cunsumption is a totally different thing.
